I have had the honor of owning 3 different GTO’s . If you’re looking for other optional names what GTO stands for, haters or dislikers, or jokers used to say it stood for Gas-Tires- Oil. Non of those other meanings are true except the name Pontiac liberally borrowed from Ferrari .

For some reason, the minimalist trim kind of reminds me of the '62 Chevy Bel air 409 bubbletop... don't ask me why, it just does. I saw two '65 GTOs at a car show recently. I wish I had an opportunity to get a closer look, but the Arizona sun prevented that....and the fact I had to help brush off my sister who had slipped and fallen on some rocks just as I was investigating these cars! Those were tough scenarios, but I would go for either the GTO or the Mustang, and I'd go for the '65 GTO.

The Mustang Shelby is really hot, but I think I'd rather have the GTO, the second scenario I think the beautiful blue '66 would be awesome!😎 video 🎉

Pontiac realized that they had a fairly lightweight performance car on their hands, inventing a whole new class of car. At the time, GM had a rule that the only car which could have an over 400 c.i. engine was a full size car. For a mid-size car, the largest engine that Pontiac could put in it was the 389. Chevy's answer was the 396, but it was actually a 402. New car sales were influenced by car magazine features and Pontiac wanted to make sure that their new GTO was faster than any other American car, so, when the GTO's were sent to the magazines for evaluation, they were sent with 421 V8's. Because this class of V8 had the same exterior dimensions, they got away with it. For 1967, the GTO got a 400 c.i. V8 and the first year that it got the 3-speed TH400 automatic. It wasn't until the next body style that the GTO gained the 455 V8 option after GM lifted it's engine size rule. The 455 Firebird Trans Am was born as well as the 427 Chevy Nova's and Camaro's. Starting in 1965, a TH400 was available behind a 396 in a Chevy. If you wanted an automatic in a Corvette, no matter the engine size, you could only get a 2-speed Powerglide. The "X" frame wouldn't allow the larger TH400. The Corvette was redesigned for 1968 and you could finally get a 3-speed automatic. Into 1968, the 2-speed automatic in B.O.P. was the ST 300. From 1969-on it was the Powerglide.
@What.its.like.
@What.its.like. Жыл бұрын
It’s crazy that a was only the 2 speed power glide at that point in time they really should have had a automatic 3 speed, or the cast iron hydra matic but that transmission was super heavy
@automatedelectronics6062
@automatedelectronics6062 Жыл бұрын
@@What.its.like. Yep. Crazy, but you couldn't get any more than a 2-speed automatic in a GM car unless it was a full-size car until 1967. Even then you could only get a Chevy Nova or Corvette with a 2-speed auto if you wanted an automatic. It wasn't until 1965 that you could get a 3-speed in a Chevy or GMC pick-up. An exception was the GMC pick-ups of the very-early 1960's and before because they used Pontiac V8's they also got the 4-speed Hydramatic. Imagine a 427 V8 in a 1967 Corvette with a Powerglide? Well with a 427 V8 in any Chevy made the cars only good for straight line acceleration. With the addition of the 2-speed Powerglide made them only good for the drag strip. The last year that you could find a 2-speed automatic in a Mopar vehicle was 1961 and the only one's I saw which used it was Desoto. Ford didn't even have a 2-speed automatic until the 1959 model year and the last usage was in 1964 behind a 260 V8. I guess that GM felt that an automatic transmission was merely a matter of convenience and if you ordered one, you didn't care about anything more. The Powerglide lasted until the middle of the 1971 model year. A friend's uncle had a 1971 4-door hardtop Impala equipped with a 2-barrel 350 and a Powerglide!

You said something like "GM wasn't in racing," but actually GM wasn't ADMITTING they were in racing. They supported cars in NHRA, SCCA and NASCAR. Jim Hall was receiving tech support and hardware for his Chaparrals. In fact, Chevy had engineers assigned to Hall in Texas to support his efforts. So GM was in racing, they were just lying about it.

65 GTO 66 GTO those years in the mid to late '60s produce some of the nicest looking automobiles American automakers have ever produced. They're just all beautiful especially 65 and 66 hard to find a car from any manufacturer those two years it didn't look beautiful. When people sit around and talk about muscle cars from the 60s and into the '70s a lot of people don't realize that the GTOs were usually the fastest muscle cars out there. As a high schooler during that time. We would all drool over those cars every time a new model was introduced. Talk about your high school fantasies there it is.

I bought it used and someone previously had installed the 389 4 speed as it said 326 on the fender. A sleeper. It had the nice interior and console. The Pontiac group could be identified as choose the egomaniac..... Like the movie "In Cold Blood" where 2 guys form an evil 3rd personality, these Pontiac guys worked some strings and came up with a mid sized monster with horsepower. My friend has a 64 convertable that recently won the Senior award at a A.A.C.A. show. Your choices today are hard! I had a 65 ElCamino street rod, and you showed a "Z-16" Big Block in the choices so I rest my case. Now which GTO do I like..... The 65 in my opinion was the nicest out of the 65,66,and 67 goats. The 66 got a longer wheelbase that made it look too long, and the 67 was better but just a long looking 65. Gotta love early goats!

Hi Jay!: A NICE look at a classic muscle car! Interesting that you show part of the cover from the 45 rpm Gee-To Tiger! SOMEWHERE in my vast collection of junk, I have that 45/ The Gee-To Tiger song is the A side. The B side is an interesting recording called Sounds of the Gee-Tp Tiger at the General Motors Proving ground, or something like that. You start in the "garage" at the GM proving ground. Then the describe the GROOVY GTO. Then you get taken on a "ride" at the proving grounds and including a 0-60 run, and a high speed run on the oval. Pretty interesting sales tool from the day! The 1965 has always been a favorite, along with the 1968-69. WYR#1 Ya killin' me Jay! As much as I like the GTO, I think I would have to go Shelby Mustang, #2 going with the '65. The '66 and '67 are REALLY good looking cars, but I think they did away with the tri-power in mid '66 which makes the '65 so cool. They made the 389 into the 400 in '67, and it was probably really good in the high-output version, but that 3 carb 389 was special! I am not usually in favor of modifying cars, but one place where it doesn't bother me is BRAKES! The '65 GTO is a FAST car and you want to be able to STOP! Drum brakes just don't cut it! My friend had a '57 Fairlane 500 hard top and they had upgraded to power brakes, but they were DRUM, the thing was HARD to stop!
@What.its.like.
@What.its.like. Жыл бұрын
Drum brakes are hard to stop I honestly think it depends on the application I’ve owned a 67 mustang that was one of the hardest vehicles that ever had to stop single master cylinder drums on all four wheels. I have a 52 Chevy 1 ton truck same situation drums on all four wheels but it’s easier to stop then the Mustang was.. I have no idea why they’re not power assisted or anything like that truck is just easier to stop in the Mustang was. Thank you so much for sharing all that information and insight

0:41one of my favorite Pontiacs the 2+2 produced from '65-'69.17:39 if it's a choice between the GTO or the mundane Chevelle I'll take the GTO. But......if it's a choice between the GTO or the pictured ultra rare Z16 SS 396 I'll take the Z16. This will help my argument that GTO is the 1st muscle car. After a year and a half(the Z16was a mid year intro) Chevy realized they needed more power. Soon the Buick GS the 442( again same instance as Chevy) the Fairlane, Comet, Coronet etc.followed suit. That is one sweet goat. Don't know why '67's were always my favorite.

As an aging Baby Boomer, I can certify that this was one of the coolest cars in 1965, an object of lust from high schoolers back in the day. Jay Leno took a bone stock 1967 GTO with a 389 with the tri-power option, drag raced it against a late model Nissan Altima. The Altima won. Technology has improved a lot since the 1960's.

Sorry. There were no bone stock 67 GTOs with a 389 tri-power option. GM put the kabosh on tri-powers for all its models except the Corvette part of the way through the 1966 model year. Plus all 67 GTOs were equipped with a 400 cubic inch engine. Same block as the 389 but different displacement.

67 gto's had 400's not 389's. Must be a youngster talking here.

The choice between the 1965 Chevelle shown in the picture and the 1965 GTO is not a choice at all. The 1965 Chevelle in your picture appears to be a Z16 car that is equipped with an L37 396/375 h.p. engine. There were only about 200 of those made, and they are highly sought after. A regular GTO is outshown by either of the other cars. (Original GT 350's are very desirable also.)

The GT 350 would be my choice that’s a car that they got right right out of the gate I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for a mustang. I have never driven a Mustang fastback but I’ve driven a GTO and a GTO is leaps and bounds better than a Mustang experience.. I haven’t drove a Chevelle from that era I’ve driven a later one same body as a 70 GTO judge I got to drive a GTO judge that was a great experience as well as a 67 I think I like the 67 better than the 70..

@@What.its.like. If you are talking about a first generation Mustang, remember that those had the bones of a Ford Falcon. Early Falcons were about as uncool as cars could get.

The Tempest was Pontiacs little old lady car like the Chevy two. It was primitive in every way. Deloreon dropped their biggest engine into it and created the muscle car in 1964. If the 64 is smaller than its lighter. The 64 is what people talk about. A friend had one. It hauled ass and was scary unsafe. The recepie for a muscle car. It would have been a poor racer. No brakes, no suspension.

Thank you so much for that insight John DeLorean definitely invited Pontiac the performance division when he was there it sucked the stiffs just didn’t get his cool vibe

Actually, Pontiac Tempest and Chevrolet Chevelle were sister cars. Pontiac did not have a car comparable to the Chevy ll in the U S.

Yeah but if you really think about it the nova was kind of in a class by itself because it didn’t really compete with the Mustang Camaro Firebird Cuda.. I mean just thinking about it what did the Chevy nova compete with I mean I guess you could cross shop the Buick skylark because it was small like the Chevy II that’s interesting That sounds like an episode really like a discussion one talking about musclecar competitors

@@What.its.like. I was 14 and I loved it. Early 70s, 4 speed car 4V. It was an old beater and I desparately wanted to buy it from him for a few hundred bucks. My instincts were right. I think they are worth about $40,000 now. He did'nt have it long. Unreliable I think. Would go with the tri power set up. GM eventually let all divisions get big engines.BOP got the 455, Chevy stayed 1 cube under with 454, Cad was the chart topper with 472/500. I remember the car as a two door post.

@@What.its.like. I had experience withe early 70s Nova. It was a POS. Big on the outside, small on the inside, butt ugly, poor gas mileage. 4 wheel drum brakes were dangerous. Cheap interior. Probably a loss leader to get people to buy Chevelles which were attractive. Terrible car. A mid 60s Chevy two was a lot better looking.

My favorite year of GTO is 1967 but the 65 are beautiful too. I think the first generation is alot better looking than the second 68 to 72 version. 67 was the first year of disc brakes 400 V8 engines and 3 speed automatic transmissions with Hurst duel gated shifter.

I like the looks of the GTO with the stacked headlights from '65 to '67, but no preference as to year. As I'm not after performance, I would choose a Tempest over the GTO.
