1965 Shelby GT350R Racing School Car Muscle Car Of The Week Video #40
You could say that this 1965 Shelby GT350R has lived several different lives. It started off as a Wimbledon White '65 Mustang Fastback, then went off to Shelby American to be turned into a '65 Shelby GT350R. However, it did not go to a dealer for street sale, as it was selected to be used by Ford as a promotional vehicle. That tour of duty ended in August of '65, when the car went back to Shelby American for its next chapter for use as one of the 3 Shelby GT350R Driving School cars. While there, the car slowly received modifications that basically transformed it into an R model Competition car. In fact, it was actually re-identified by Shelby as the 37th GT350R Competition car while at Shelby American. The car was also used as the prototype for the GT500 427 big block cars for 1967. The driveline was returned to a 289, and it was eventually sold as a GT350R and raced in SCCA events in California. The engine was blown, the car was stored, and the discovered in the late 1980s and restored to the form you see here today. It remains one of the most interesting stories of all the cars in the Brothers Collection, and one of our favorites here at Muscle Car Of The Week!

I restored this car way back in 1989 I took it out of a barn in the Mountains north of Fresno Ca. It had rats living in the fuel filler and had been sitting 20 years It was one of the cars at the school at Willowi Springs It had been on its roof and we had to fix that as it was not even from side to side. It had Goodyear Blue Streeks all around

Really Great Design from a Great assembler of some of the Greatest fabricators, Designers,Race Car drivers, engineers,Managers, photoghers,secretaries,test drivers and Mechanics!!!! CARROLL SHELBY WAS A GREAT ONE OF THE GREATEST ASSEMBLERS OF PEOPLE IN AUTOMOBILE HISTORY!! PERIOD!!! YES HE WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST DRIVERS OF ALL TIME!! BUT HIS REAL BLESSING FROM GOD ALL MIGHTY WAS HIS ABILITY TO GROUP TOGETHER ALL OF THE ABOVE UNDER ONE ROOF AND THAT IN TURN CREATED WHAT CAME TO BECOME SHELBY AMERICAN!!!! 🇱🇷✌️😁😉

Ford was so much more into racing than any other American make with their GT350s, Cobras and GT40s racing all over the world and also 427 429 NASCAR cars if you care to count that. Even Formula 1 was dominated in the late sixties through the seventies by the Ford DFV V8.

@@arttrombley7385 - Maybe, but they can't argue with Carroll Shelby who was behind all of them except NASCAR and F1! Ford was definitely involved in more varieties of racing, world wide than either Chrysler or GM, and that is not an opinion, but a fact!

something that isn't touched on is the heads...if they left the tiny valve 289 heads as stock (the GT350 came with standard 289 HIPO/K code heads whose valves were the same size as 2 barrel 289 C code heads), there is no way they could extract around 365/375 or even closer to 425 in the final tunes, without heavy head and port work. The head work was done by the shop in Van Nuys, I think their name was California Head Porting. the 425 HP versions had the .190 chevy intake valves in them (the heads would not accept the .202 chevy valves, though I believe there may have been early 351 windsor heads modified to use the chevy .202 intake valves). .
@scottford1091

Crane Cams did porting on the gt40 289 heads. That's actually the basis for the newer gt40 and gt40p explorer heads. The same, only different.

FROM THE SAAC FORUM>>>>>>>>>>>>> The guy hosting the video is very confused. He combined the histories of two separate cars. The car seen in the video is 5021, which was a CSSHPD car. Those who don't know the story surrounding the two cars, and how those histories are intertwined, should refer to the registry. 5R537 was the car used as the GT500 prototype, not 5021. Again, the car in the video is 5021, which had 5R537's SFM tag added to it at the factory and was sold that way by the factory before SAI ceased to exist. Very very poorly researched and misleading video, but 5021 and 5R537 are both very cool cars. What is interesting is the guy who hosts the video refers to the registry but clearly didn't read it.

Randall Farnsworth, thank you for that. I am far from Shelby historian. But I do not a little bit about them. I have owned a few over my lifetime. Two 1969 GT500's in my new 2013 Shelby GT350. That has been modified by Shelby American. She's pushing 700 hp at the crank. With all the suspension and frame stiffening work. She runs on rails. Although it may be upgrading to carbon ceramic brakes in the future.

Regarding it being used as a 427 test mule/prototype. Not sure I buy that, as the 427 doesn't fit in the '65/'66 Mustang without removing the inner fender wells and relocating the shock towers. Of course it is possible to put it back together but this car looks so pristine in the engine bay, it doesn't look like it was ever cut up for a 427. my 2 cents anywho

Considering this GT 350 r is really a race or competition car makes it the badass of all Mustangs to me. It's pure. No amenities, just the rear window being vented makes it the baddest Mustang.
