Reading books written by pseudo defense analysts doesn't define facts needed for winning war. War is won with morale, strategy and emotion needed to fight for a cause a soldier believes in. 1965 war was won by a defiant and brave Lt General Harbaksh Singh who defied then army chief and refused to retreat despite facing much advanced Paton Tanks of Pakistan with Old Centurian Tanks. Harbaksh Singh had strategy and more than strategy he had strong emotion to defend his place of faith Amritsar. Thanks for not mentioning real hero's name but it will not change facts, it may change perception but perceptions work in politics not in war zone.

After ceasefire I have been to areas captured by our valiant armed forces upto Ichhogil canal which was not far away from Lahore and found the Josh of our forces was commendable and we were told that Indian forces had reached on the outskirts of Lahore and I was very much disappointed that we agreed for the ceasefire and Kashmir problem would've been bargained and finished for ever on the table. I had in late 1970 s read an autobiography like book written by Gen J N Chaudhuri. And from other sources also , I understand that the main reasons for India accepting the cease fire were : 1. Stress on the economy and food security. 2. The high possibility of a second front getting opened by China , towards end of the monsoon and BEFORE setting in of the winter in the Himalayas region. 3. Gen Chaudhuri was not very eager to advance too much, which would have meant many more casualties. He was afraid & rightly so, that what the armed forces would achieve through their sacrifice would finally be compromised in the inevitable Peace Talks. That is what actually happened at Tashkhent in Jan 1966.

India at that time was really like north korea surrounded by ememys expect we had democrasy . It was really difficult for us not to listen to other countries that time and we had lot of international pressure which lasted till india was able to get atomic bomb via pokhran . From there on all countries knew messing with india will be a bad idea . Very nice research Kamal and very superb presentation Nikhil. The different views that you have presented on this war is really very appreciative. This is what we as people of the nation expects from media, to give a bird view of any situation without politicising or connecting it with any religion or party. The Chief of Army Staff who won the war was awarded the title of Field Marshal. Ironically, Ayub Khan, the then dictator of Pakistan, gave himself the title of Field Marshal despite the fact that the war of 1965 had no decisive outcome.

One point I would like to make about this 1965 war is that then the Arny General Jayant Choudhury was given collective control of Indian forces of Army, Navy and Air force was given by prime minister Lal bahadur Shastri and Indian Parliament. Air force in particular air marshal Arjun singh was given lot of credit for successful operations of air force. It must be that General Choudhury deserves a lot of credit also. There were several logistical and other reasons why Gen choudhury recommended to the Prime minister Shastri to halt the war while initially he opposed the move.
