If you use the flange joint, what does the backside of the quarter panel look like? To look stock do you need to use a butt joint? The stepped flange seems easiest, but I am afraid that the back side will look bad and make it obvious a repair has been made. I am trying to go back to stock and don't want an obvious seem. I want to keep the original quarter since it is in good shape except for around the wheel opening. Thanks

in that case, butt joint it and TIG weld it hammering the seam between welding. Jeff

If your quart panels were solid except around the wheel house and near the trunk exstention,would you patch the bad areas or do a full quarter ?
@AllisonCustoms
@AllisonCustoms 6 жыл бұрын
That's a hard one - almost a toss up. By the time you patch them and body work it all I think you could have done Qtr. skins and probably get it done quicker.

Allison Customs' - PROJECT CAR TV that was my thought also ,i have a full a.m.d. quarter with the door jam ,and I keep going back and forth on patch or full ,afraid to cut out all that good factory steel only to find out somethings wrong with the new panel thats not a quick fix after the fact ,lol

I probably wouldn't do a full panel, cut about a 1/2" below the belt line and then about a 1/2" from the edge of the door opening. Just use as much as you need.

Because you just ruined the value of the car. Anyone can look in the trunk and see the patch job. In time the seam will Crack. Can't be done without half can of putty that expands different than steel in hot sun and Crack. Never skin a car unless you want a high school job or are going to dump the car on someone and then shane on you.

What would one expect to pay for this exact job? Only replacing the 1/4 and wheel house? Just a rough estimate. Say everything else was not rusted out?
@AllisonCustoms
@AllisonCustoms 6 жыл бұрын
That is hard to answer. I don’t think I’ve seen one yet without rust. Even here in NM stuff rusts after 50 years and needs repairs. If it was maybe really clean and no serious accident damage, you could probably do a Qtr. Skin in two days and any underlying parts, wheel houses, etc. in another day. But if you are mini-tubbing or doing any other mods, that would change all of that up. A full qtr takes longer to fit but welds in a lot faster. I would almost rather do full Qtrs than skins.

How much does a restoration like this cost? I have a 1970 impala convertible that I am trying to get done.
@AllisonCustoms
@AllisonCustoms 7 жыл бұрын
This is a hard question to answer. Restorations are typically less than building a modern vehicle with classic sheet metal, but it all depends on what you are starting with. Rusty shell or a Garage kept 500 mile original car? Do you want a Daily Driver, a Restoration (numbers matching?), a Resto-Mod, or a full on Race car. Next what is the budget? I've worked on $5000 Drivers and $150,000 Resto-Mods - You have to know what you are willing to spend to find the ballpark you will be in. Straight up cost though - I charge $50/hour plus Materials. The Chevelle in this video will probably have over a 1000 hours in it before it is done.

I have some rust on my car. It won't be a daily driver, nor a show car. I was just asking to get a ball park figure. I have another question though... If I can't find any 1970 hoods or fenders, are there any other model impala that I could use???
@AllisonCustoms

To be honest, I don't know. I have only ever worked on a 1966 Impala and while I know many '65 parts fit, I don't know anything about the 1970. I also discovered that a Caprice of those years shares some sheet metal; I discovered this when I saw my first '66 Caprice at a car show. I guess I am suggesting checking with other owner's and watching for similarities with other models at local car shows. Maybe someone here will chime in with some answers.

Replace the full panel, what you are doing is cutting a corner. If you are going to do something do it right. The panel will never hold up like that.

What I did was fix the problem and keep the price as reasonable as possible. We all have our ideas of proper repair, but one is not necessarily better than another - getting the desired result for a fair price and time invested is the goal.

I agree. What a shame to skin and ruin a car. Nothing more ugly than looking inside the trunk except the seam when it cracks. High-school work at best.

YT had me remove the music a year or so back, when I originally made the video, the music was approved. Sometime after that particular group removed their YT permissions and the music was considered copyrighted and I could no longer use it. Hence, lots of silence.

I had to go back and watch the video to see what you were referring to. The vid is 3.5 years old now and YT disallowed the music I used back then, so the audio is very cut up, when there isn’t just silence. That said, I think the vid shows what I was doing pretty well. It wasn’t really intended as an instructional vid. There are really to many custom mods to be a “How To”; but if I can help by answering some questions, let me know. The biggest factor is keep test fitting and trimming until everything lines up correctly. You can see in the video that I test fit that panel over and over until it was right and I bet I only showed a 1/4 of the times I tried it.

Why would anyone ruin a car with a quarter skin? If your not doing the entire panel don't do it at all
