1966 was my favorite model year for the Galaxie 500. I remember seeing it before they were sold to the general public. My father was a scientist at the FoMoCo research lab in Dearborn. Each year in the early fall, Ford would put out the new cars on the grass near my father's lab and employees' families could come see them. Every year, the cars had new "looks" unlike these days when the appearance of a model may last 5-10 years. It was an exciting time for a kid who loved cars!

In 1974 when I was 21 years old had a 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 XL 390 V8, factory air, identical interior in aqua blue with buckets, 3 speed automatic floor shift, console, exterior in aqua blue, black vinyl top. Very powerful, lots of torque, tire smoking shredding, highway cruiser. Came equipped with Sears steel belted radial tires made in France that lasted 70000 miles with lots of abuse. Unbelievable tire life for the 1970's. Looking back now wish I took better care of that well engineered machine.

The wired thing about Jay and his car is he has such fond memories of his father’s car but in his he has taken the original 428 engine out of it and put in a crate motor! If you do that, it’s not a 7.0 litre car anymore! I love Jay’s passion and his collection but on this car, I just don’t get it. He’s created a new car in the body of a Galaxi Seven litre.

This car is perfect ! Its just like what my neighbor had when i was a kid of 11 in '66 (though theirs was white). I loved it when he mentioned the roof line. It was always one of my favorite features of this car. Like i mentioned before, i've only seen 2 since then, a red 7 Litre in need of a restoration (but ran and drove) at a Wheels and Deals car lot in the late '80s and a cherry'd out maroon convertible full of family, black top down in a drug store parking lot about 5 years ago. This installment was great. Thanks Lou and Ed !

I LOVE this car. A 66 Galaxie 7-Litre is my bucket list car. As I came of age in the mid-late 70s, people were practically giving away those thirsty FE powered Galaxies and T-Birds. I always drove a 60s Galaxie XL or Thunderbird. The 66 XL was, by far, my favorite and still is. Sadly, they were just cool used cars back then. They got used up and tossed aside. Between 75 and 85, or so, I purchased 3 1966 7-Litres within 20 miles of my home. 2 of them were within 4 miles. They were Emberglo, Black and Red. 2 automatic, one 4 speed. The Auto's had AC, the 4 speed didn't. There wasn't an AM-FM radio or reclining passenger seat among them. I scoured the local junkyards and never found an AM-FM radio, they were...uncommon. That awesome passenger bucket seat is totally new to me from watching this video. In my 60 years, I've never seen or heard of that option! Back then, I had no idea how rare those cars were. It was only with the Internet that I found out, long after those 3 cars were gone from my life. I hope they survived and are now on the 7-Litre Registry. Having enjoyed 3 7-Litres and with 20-20 hindsight, I look back with some regret and repeat the words that so many of us older "car guys" do. "If I only knew now what I had back then...".

I purchased a 7 Litre Ford Galaxie 500 new and drove it many years. one afternoon while driving on I-85 with a speed of 85 miles an hour the right rear tire blew out and the car just sat down on that side and it never wobbled. It had touring suspension, stiff. Automatic C6 transmission. The odometer stopped operating, it would show the speed but not the mileage, and the AC compressor had to be shut down account knocking and had to be replaced. Had disc brakes on the front like the Thunderbird. I wish I had kept it.

One of my FAVORITE Years for Ford. Was not a fan of the ‘67 model but in ‘66 the car just looked right inside and out. I went for a ride in a used ‘66 LTD coupe in 1980 and the car was so smooth and quiet I didn’t know the car was running. Amazing how even then these were refined.

Beautiful car Lou. Always liked the full size Ford's of the early to mid 60s. Heard there is a cream colored 65 Galaxie out there with a factory 427 SOHC/4 speed combo. It's one of three Ford's ever to come from the factory with the legendary 427 Cammer.....which Ford rated at 615hp with a single 4 barrel and 657hp with dual quads. Incredible numbers for 1960s technology. Really kinda dangerous with 1960s tire/brake/suspension technology lol. Probably one of the reasons the Cammer was banned by NASCAR. Would love to see you do a video on that one if you can find where it is.

That is a very unique car and I am Glad Classic cars exist I don't know who I would be if they didn't. I like the way it rumbles if it was a bit more aggressive just a little bit I would be head-over-heels but I'm already In love❤

I love this 1966 I had a 1965 wagon it had the four barrel 352 cubic inch motor would no t pass a gas station. I prefer the 1966 the lines are cleaner. I love the grill.the same used on the LTD model. That seat was awesome! Love the color a torquey engine. My for was hard on motor mounts too. But I great old car. I like this Jay Leno has a seven Liter. That is the first time I ever saw one. Love the owner of this car and a great piece of history!! Thanks Lou for sharing!

I had one in guardsman blue , under the street lights it looked dark purple, the list price was about $ 4780.00. It had p/w , a/c , C6 and towing package. I saw Jay Leno 7litre restoration but didn't have the white pin stripping like original. I Had the 64 and half Mustang but the 7 was my favorite car

Tim Allen is grunting as we speak. And Clyde Barrow is truly doing pirouettes in his grave. I owned a 66 Galaxy but never knew these things existed, but then I guess I looked the part of a poor kid back then. This is without a doubt Ford’s best at one- upsmanship in the car wars of the sixties. But the ultimate compliment is the mention of the passenger headrest and reclining seat. It must be the true conception of the term “CAR SEX” !!!

A 7 Liter badge on an American car in 1966??? Even Canada didn't go metric until the late 1970's...very rare and unusual. A beautiful car to have! Congrats on your find.

no metric bolts on cars until 78 , thank you jimmy carter,we all had to instantly buy twice as much tools to do our jobs. One american bolt right next to it a metric. Carter has recently lost the badge of worst prez in history, to the last administration which made carter look like a profiteer. Jimmy is so glad to have the moniker off his back. The badge was the only thing metric on the car

I currently have one like this. Its not a 7 litre, But it is a 66 LTD with the 428 (Q code) and a 4 speed (trans 5) The LTD has the same roof line and is a 2 door with a bench seat. Original color was vintage burgundy. I bet its more rare than the beautiful 7 litre featured here.

That passenger seat option was also on the T-bird from 1964-79 . Since those seats in the XL and 7 Litre were an upgrade for those models and look very much like the 66 T-Bird seats.....FORD must have offered that Option in the Galaxie XL as well for the $45.00 extra charge .

I was 13 yrs old when these cars were introduced. It had a base price of around $3598. I remember seeing these vehicles in Ford showrooms when my father was shopping for a new car. With options noted in the video this car had a bottom sticker of about $4450. That placed this Ford solidly in the medium priced field comparable to a similarly priced Pontiac Starchief Executive or a Mercury Montclair.

Thanks, Guys! Actually, little more elegant than my FORD **66 GALAXIE 500/XL, 4 SPD/352 /Burgandy/ Black INT, IWHT *NO A/ c or Disc Brakes ( I added Metallic HD BRAKES). Was nice cruiser for some five years at Pharmacy School Purdue, etc. for me: had to **upgrade Shocks, tires , add COOLANT RECOVERY SYSTEM , which was available * retrofit**, only at FORD Dealers **initially in **1967(interestingly from POPULAR MECHANICS STORIES: maybe some Ford Experts know additional??) as mine DID NOT HAVE CRS SYSTEM/Tank...Also, the Emergencey Blinker is in glove Box( at least mine was)......Anyways I did secretly lust for a 428/ maybe 427 XL, (particularly a RARE CONVERTIBLE), if I could afford the gas bill....etc. Good stuff..!,,

If you think the 7 Litre fender badge is hard to find, try finding a '65 Galaxie 500 badge. They simply don't exist. And they're made of very brittle pot metal.

Interestingly, I forgot to mention, how much and many GALAXIE XL STUFF is included in 7 LITER....AND YES THAT is quite a four speed shift: do not believe I ever wondered what gear, or ,missed a shift in my ‘66....(see my comments 1966 GALAXIE XL 4 spd/500, below,).....ALSO, kind of **funny how some of these Galaxies were optioned, equipped, & ordered: either by Customer or Dealers And, FORD PERFORMANCE/ MOTORCRAFT big help in the “ zDay”.......I found out mine not really made for vigorous Driving,:braking, turning, ( I,had to quickly **upgrade a lot),Anyways, thanks again...
