I had two GTO's. Both convertibles. A red 65 389 tri power. 4 speed, 3.90 posi rear. Only had it for 4.5 months [3 speeding tickets in 4 months] and had to get rid of the cop magnet. Beat the 3rd ticket to save my license. 17 months later got a red 67, 400ci, 360hp, 4 speed, 3.90 posi rear. Had this car for almost 4 years. Wish I still had both these cars !

My parents took me to the Pontiac dealership in 1966. They bought a '66 LeMans. I still remember driving home in that car. I was only 4 yrs old. Liked the '66 ever since then, even though EVERYONE ELSE wants the '67, especially since the 400 was new that year. Nice cars, both of them. Brings back the memories!!

The vertical stacked lights and front end on the GTO of this era is amazing. muscle care movement was strong and very short lived. I really like the body language of the mid sixty GM cars.

The only way to get a 1966 GTO to get up and go is to put in a 427l88 motor in it like I did now we're talking about a fast car

With all due respects, I am not being a jerk. They almost got it right as far the restoration goes. The engine is the wrong color, the valve covers are cheesy, the steering wheel is tired looking as is the heater controls. On the other hand, paint and body looks good as does the vinyl roof. The shifter is not even close as is the radio The original shifter was the OEM version of the Hurst Mystery Shifter with a white shifter know.Spend a few additional dollars and you could bring this GTO back to what it was in 66.

I own a 1966 Lemans. Body is crusty and rusty but I have the 326 engine nice and trusty. Here is my advice: Offer no more than $20,000 and that is for the body. Electric fan instead of belt driven fan is a deal killer for me because then I would be wondering what other stupid things the restorer did. The more electric gizmos, the more problems with having to track down electric faults. Tach not working quite right is a major deduction in the offer I would make. Because removing the instrument cluster to work on it is a female dog even if we take into account that there is no rust making removing screws even more fun. Did this last summer to replace the speedometer. One other thing and this is very important. Get your head under the dashboard with a bright flashlight and look at the windshield support from the inside. This part corrodes bad and leaks so if this happened and was not repaired or a new windshield support welded in, then that is what you are buying. Same for the rear window support and this is easier to look at. During rainy weather the water gathers underneath the chrome trim and along the seal and steel. And sits there drying last after the storm. Turns steel into air. If you are buying a freshly restored GM A-body, ask them what they did about the windshield support.

Haven't looked at the website yet so don't know if this car is still available, but one thing I'd immediately do is... put different springs in and LOWER IT! The rake/stance is nice, just too high overall. Yes, of course it should have a 389 or at least a 400 in it. But if that 350 is built right, who's gonna know the difference when you put your foot down? Good looking car overall. Just needs some details straightened out. And seriously, if you're going to spend the money for new Torque Thrusts and RWL tires, why wouldn't you spend the $$ to replace those door handles?! P.S. A few more details would be nice. Like, what kind of 4-speed is it? What are the rear-end gears? Things like that help a lot 😉 Had a '66 myself back in '85. The 389 was gone when I got it, someone put a 428 in it, with the tri-power! Got about 12mpg but got a whole lot more pu**y!! 😆

Because....a 350 is and was an experimentle engine!!! And let me assure you my freind it will SCREAM!!!!!!!!
@elebeu Жыл бұрын
The 350 was not an experimental engine. It was a bored 326, just as the 400 was a bored 389 and the 428 was a bored 421. The 350 was a grocery getter engine, even with the 4 bbl.. It has the same stroke as the 400 but smaller cylinders that shroud the valves and interfere with air flow.
@joebacarella28292 жыл бұрын
Wow, it looks like someone ran out of cash after the 15k-20k paint and body work, too bad they choose a 350, I know this car isn`t gonna be cheap. It needs the seats refoamed and covered, headliner fixed, console restored, dash restored, and a built 400. That 350 is really shame. should have been a 389. or if you are going to do it wrong, put the 400 in. that is no show car. too much left undone. makes you wonder what else was done less than correct. you have quite of list of items that need to be done or redone correctly.
@Rob021382 жыл бұрын
Weird…spent time on paint but couldn’t be bothered to replace a destroyed steering wheel and put in correct shift knob? That wouldn’t take any effort. Why put in a 350 when should be 389, and even has 6.5L badging on side?? I can see leaving dash alone but why not tighten up headliner?

So... what's your dealership's asking price for this GTO??? Always kills me that few online sellers of old "restored" vehicles will post an asking price. From experience, it's ALWAYS because the asking price is unreasonable, as to where it ought to be. No price posted is a big red flag sign that as a potential buyer, you need to avoid the seller, no matter how much you might wanna be "wowed" by the shiny paint & nostalgia of the older muscle cars.

In 77 my 65 Goat 389 wore out, so I replaced the short block with a 350, which lowered the compression a bit, to run on piss gas. Kept the 389 heads, and trips, and lost a few tenths in the quarter mile. Still had a blast with that car.

350, 389, 400? .... what is the motor? Start out saying, "numbers matching" or "non- numbers matching". Crack me if I'm wrong, the 400 came out in 68', crack me again, the 350....67'. The 66' should have the 389 with different HP options.

He did say it was a 350, but also stated if some-one wanted to put in a 400... But we all know 66 was the last yr for the 389. 400 came out in 67. But the 350 replaced the 326 in 68.

She's a looker, but why anyone would choose to put a 350 CHEVY in place of the original 389 (the year before they changed to 400 c.i. for '67) is way beyond me and in my opinion RUINED it! I'm not a GTO officianado, but I've had a '66, '68, and a '67 in that order. I used to own a paperback large book called "The Big 'Little GTO' Book", which I've read most of. So I may not be a complete GTO authority, but I do know more about these cars than anyone you'll ever meet. I dare anyone to match me as far as knowledge about these cars. I'll leave it at that.

So they took a GTO and removed everything that made it a GTO. If you like the body style and want to modify one, get a Lemans or Tempest, like I did. A GTO is a piece of history and shouldn't be molested.
