Thank your for the video! My high school friend Pat Reynolds found a 1966 4-speed GTO in his driveway in 1979. His older brother, not living at home, had bought the GTO at auction in Bristol VA under the condition when its mechanic had resettled to Northern VA its slipping clutch would be replaced for free. The story at auction on the 1966 GTO was its owner had had every conceivable performance modification done to it by his mechanic over its life time, but with the mechanic moving to Northern Virginia it was decided to return the car fairly much to stock for sale. Pat's brother has left the GTO in his mom's driveway until its mechanic was available. Pat found the GTO's keys. I first heard the 1966 GTO as Pat ran by my house at higher speed than any other car could gotten to in that short run. When he stopped I noticed the rear tires had tall sidewalls almost as high at 10.5 inch wide tires. I remember feeling the rear tires. They were warm and very gummy. The writing on the sidewalls had been rubbed out so it was impossible to read. The GTO was on empty and knowing high compression engines needed high octane gasoline I volunteered to put $5 of my allowance into gasoline for it and directed us to the Sunoco gasoline station that had high octane gasoline in 1979, but I was worried about the valves not getting lead. After the fill up Pat couldn't accelerate the car in 1st gear with the bulky clutch so shifted to 2nd gear early. I was counting seconds and watching speedometer. The GTO mostly in 2nd gear got to 60 mph in about 3 1/2 seconds! I have since determined the GTO had not been returned pretty much to stock! Pat got much better at knowing how to shift the GTO over the next few weeks. The next time I went for a ride we were going through an intersection on Gallows Road between RT US 50 and 29/211 when Pat down shifted to 2nd gear at full throttle at 35 mph. I was pegged with my back up against the seat frame as the seat back spring fully collapsed. In a little over over a second we were going 75 mph. The car would push the rear axle down during hard acceleration with those gummy drag strip tires it could accelerate harder in a straight line than I experience later in a Ferrari in lateral acceleration at the Summit Point road racing circuit in WV. The GTO would be a torque monster to about 4,500 RMPs. Between 4,500 RPMs and 5,000 RMPs the engine would transition to extreme speed. The sound was like an angry animal determined to get out its cage. After 5,000 RPM the acceleration was beyond anything I've experienced before or later. The shift point was about 6,700 RPM. The jump in speed this car could make was incredible. From 35 mph to 80 mph in a few seconds. Without the drag tires in rear it would have been very handicapped. Northern Virginia Fairfax County had numerous intersections where there was a high crown, likely a hold over from when the roads were gravel, that would upset mid 1970s slush mobiles such as Ford Torinos at much over 15 mph. We had a 1973 Lemans with Gabriel shocks that could get through them at 35 mph, but is was rough. Pat was running a 1966 car heading towards one of these interactions at 75 mph and I didn't think we'd make it, but he'd got it down to 60 mph and the car got through. The last time I went for a ride in the GTO Pat had masted it. He didn't tell me a head of time, but came upon one of these high crown N.VA intersection at 80 mph. I didn't see how we were going to survive. He feathered the throttle dipping the nose of the car. Then went full throttle lifting the soft front suspension over the crown and placing all the weight of the car on the pushed down rear axle and drag tire sidewalls. The GTO had very hard composure over a nearly impossible road crown at 80 mph. It sailed though at 80 mph over what would be similar to a railroad track mound crossing in most parts of the USA. That was basically the end of driving the GTO with its clutch nearly gone. Pat said he missed a shift and it revved to 7,000 RMPs with its hood shaking. It didn't run so well after that. It sat in the driveway until his brother took it into the mechanic to have it clutch replaced. Then the story gets weird. Pat's brother was calling the garage where the mechanic was and they'd say he was working on the GTO at night. This went on for the good part of a week. The garage then said both the GTO and the mechanic had disappeared. Further calls about it to the garage were that the mechanic was running drugs. This sounded like garage was making things up and I was thinking about having my father ask about it. A couple months later Pat says a couple of detectives came by his house asking about the BLUE car as they called it. They said the blue car had been used in a federal drug sting operation and had gotten away with $80,000 in cash and if it wasn't recovered a lot of important people could loose their jobs. This story could make a major motion picture. The detectives said the blue car was set to be make the drug drop off and money pickup. The officer on the scene said the car just disappeared. About 50 Fairfax County patrol cars had been stationed at the last minute to guard the sting operation. Over the next 20 minutes 1/3 of those cars were totaled in pursuing the blue car that could disappear, 1/3 were immobilized, and 1/3 could move, but were unfit for duty. The psychological effect on the police was so extensive the local police supervisor in charge determined that his police were in no mental state to apprehend a likely pointless blue car at this stage and ordered the police to find a safe place to park and wait for the next 15 to 20 minutes. LET THE BLUE CAR GO. Most of the patrol cars crashed going though a high crowned intention mostly into each other or avoiding doing so from the story the police detective stated. There was one patrol car that made it through the intersection only to come to halt a half mile later with trashed engine likely from hitting the crown of the intersection. Most of these cars were mid 1970s Ford Torinos with drivers brought up on a 55 mph speed limit. That GTO was faster than regular street tires could hold before the mechanic spend nights working on it. Pat taking the car to 7,000 RMPs probably necessitated the mechanic putting a major valve train upgrade onto the engine. They'd probably detuned the GTO a bit before selling it. With the extensive rework the GTO was probably a lot faster than we'd experienced. With what I known now it is high unlikely that GTO was still actually a 389. Running a Pontiac big block well over 6,000 RMPs means it likely had a forged crankshaft installed in it. Forged crankshafts for Pontiac V8s are typically going to be for high displacement, so it was likely over 460 cu in. Every time I try to figure out a likely horsepower to weight ratio I keep having to up it. Now I think that GTO was likely above 600 HP for a car weighing about 3,400 pounds. The weight may have been less. The front fender metal was very thin, but hard when I looked at it through the door jam. Every part of that 1966 GTO looked pretty much stock, except for the rear tires, but I think that was by design by people that really knew what they were doing. The GTO was a carefully crafted component of their carefully crafted operation. The reverse sting operation was represented as being Spanish nationals that returned to their country.

Back in 1966, I bought a brand new 1966 Barrier Blue GTO from Pellie's Pontiac in Highland Falls New York. Mine was only slightly different from this one. It had the four barrel, I don't remember why I didn't get the trips. I didn't like redlines with the beautiful blue color so I got wire wheel hubcaps and spinners. You should have seen those wheels spinning at low speeds before they became a blur. A thing of beauty. In all these years I Have never seen one like that even though they were options from Pontiac. In I also got the optional wooden steering wheel which this car has. Matches the walnut dash which I think was standard. Unfortunately it met an untimely end when I loaned it to a friend and he got T-boned on Groesbeck Ave outside of Detroit. But this car is perfect. Just Love it. Best looking GTO ever. Thanks for sharing.

Just a bit more trivia, GTO stands for “Gran Turismo Omologato.” The tiger is reminiscent of “Esso,” and their ad campaign of many years ago. 1966 Pontiac GTO. The Pontiac GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato) was an extremely successful and one of the most iconic Pony Cars/Muscle Cars to date. It was introduced in September of 1963 for the 1964 model year as a trim for the Pontiac Tempest/Pontiac Tempest LeMans (For 1964 until 1965). The car was fitted with a 389 cubic inch Pontiac V8 (6.4 Litre Pontiac V8) that would produce 335 HP and around 390 LB-FT of Torque along with a 400 cubic inch V8 that would make around 345-350 HP, which was the same horsepower that was made by the 1968-1970 Plymouth Roadrunner's standard V8, a 4-speed manual, and three deuces (Three 4-barrel carburetors). It became it's own model circa 1966 and got a newer, more aggressive appearance. The car sold around 80,000 units in total, with 1966 being the best-selling year (Selling around 25,000 cars). The second gen GTO (1968-1972) is arguably the second most iconic GTO (If not just as iconic as the original GTO), introduced with a drastically new appearance (With new features such as a more coke-bottle appearance, hide-away headlights similar to other cars such as the 1968-1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III, 1967-1969 Cadillac Eldorado, and 1967-1970 Mercury Cougar), and a new rear end. It removed the iconic 389 V8, leaving only the 400 V8 but with a newly added 455 cubic inch (7.5 Litre) V8. These engines made around 370 HP, which was the same as the 1970 Oldsmobile 442 and it's W30 package if applied. For 1969, Pontiac introduced "The Judge" package for the Pontiac GTO featuring "The Judge" badges (And a swirling black stripe as a part of the badge), a new interior, and a body-colored spoiler, Pontiac also introduced the "Trans Am" package for the Pontiac Firebird, which included upgraded suspension, brakes, stiffness, a new paint job, a new interior, and a higher price (Only 689 were made in 1969, and only eight, and I mean EIGHT convertibles were produced as Trans Ams in 1969, making them EXTREMELY rare). 1970 introduced another facelift to the Pontiac GTO lasting until 1972, featuring quad headlights, a uniquely split grille, and a new horizontal back-end taillight pattern. Unfortunately, the Pontiac GTO declined for 1973 and 1974 due to the changes of SAE Gross HP to SAE Net HP in 1972 (Which was required for every car, making them feel less powerful, but more accurate) and the 1973 oil crisis, which helped imports rise in popularity along with cars that didn't consume much gas.

I had a '66, but mine was gold with a gold interior. The engine was the base 389 with a single 4 bb. carb, 330 hp. My only gripe with my car is that it had the boring 2 speed Powerglide tranny which caused the car to burn premium leaded gasoline like crazy. But it was sooo pretty, you kind of got over the poor gas mileage. It was not so fast from the start but it really "woke up" from about 40 - 70 mph, when it shifted into 2nd. I sold it at around 120,000 miles in about '73, just before the Arab oil embargo and never saw it again. It was starting to burn a little oil, but the new owner didn't seem to mind. Wish I had it back!

Beautiful car and color. It funny that so many go for the '67, but I like the '66 better with the finer grille pattern and the straight simple rocker molding. A cleaner look to me.
