My dad street raced in 63-early 65 before he got drafted, and he used to talk about the 421 Ponchos. Even though these were full sized cars, they got a lot of respect. 1 car in particular was a blue 4dr sedan with a 421 4 speed. The guy would pull into a gas station, remove the regular street tires, and put on a set of Beutel Aire rain tires which were almost as soft as a slick, and after a couple victories, no one wanted to race him. Dad said the guy refused to open the hood, so no one knew if it was a 4bbl or a tri power. Dad said that this car was 1 of the few he lost to, even with his hopped up 383 4 speed 64 Sport Fury, which was a lot lighter. Dad said "I'd get him every time on a hole shot, but by the time that guy hit 3rd gear, he was a full fender ahead of me, and he just kept pulling. " Ponchos are known for great torque, and the last time dad saw that guy, the clutch scattered and destroyed the transmission, sending pieces of metal into the man's right leg. Anyhow, nice to see this owner enjoying this rare example the way it was intended! New cars are faster, but nothing sounds, feels or brings true emotions to a driver's face like 1 of these restored and properly tuned muscle cars!

My parents had a midnight blue 1963 Pontiac Catalina 389 2 bbl. And it was the car I learned to drive with. I should say I learned to drive the hard way with, it wasn’t pretty. Passed everything but a gas station, I know the one that I drove was good for about 7 mpg downhill with a tailwind pushing it, and this was during gas rationing in the 70’s. A trip to the Jersey shore needed at least three stops for gas, and it blew up a 16 year old’s wallet to keep gas in it at 53 cents a gallon. Afraid to ask what the gas mileage on this 421 is, but I’m sure they are fun miles! Thanks for sharing this one!

Lou, Those early model Pontiac's that came with a 389-cu and a 2-bbl were pretty dog gone fast as well. Those 2-bbls on those 389-cu had a throat on them that were just as big as a 4-bbl. My parents had a 1960 Pontiac Ventura 389-cu, 2bbl, W/Automatic Trans. But if you flipped the top of the breather up-side-down, when you stomped it to the floor when taking off it moaned like a 4-bbl., lol All the while smoking the tires! But that thing was a Tank!

Always liked the fact that the mid priced GM cars had two different sizes. Here it's obvious that this Catalina was on the smaller chassis similar to the Chevrolet and the Bonneville was on the stretched and larger one. Except for the engine choice in this case, I'm guessing the Catalina was priced somewhere between the Bel Air and the Impala.

Pontiac in the 60s was the only GM brand I liked. Actually, it's the only GM brand period. It is a shame that GM had to stop producing that brand. My cousin had a 63 Catalina convertible. She took us for a ride in it. It was my first time riding in a convertible, and it was the only time I rode in one with the top down until I got my own convertible, when I turned 16. The top on the car in the video was offered on all the GM brands. My uncle had a 54 Impala with the same top. I gotta say a real convertible top is a better one to have on a car. This video brought back some memories.

The 63 Pontiac was the best looking GM had that year. 63 was the odd year for design

Hi Lou! I’m hooked on your videos now! One question: Since you’re in Chicagoland, do you get to Volo Auto Museum very often? I lived in Naperville from 1988-1994, and my brother-in-law still lives in Algonquin. I live in Texas now, but go to Volo with my brother-in-law whenever we visit them. Are there any other good old car museums or even sales outlets other than Volo you would recommend I can visit when I’m up there? Thanks!

Hi OldRustySteele! Glad you're enjoying the Channel with me. Make sure to watch the commercials in full (don't skip if you can) as that is how I get paid to share with you. Yes, Volo is Awesome. Volo is about it for car sales, other than the auctions. Here is a fun video from Volo. Enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJi9e2N9i6mMqZo

Going to buy my first american car very soon. Next week. A Pontiac Bonneville 4 door 389. Also got air condition on it. It will be saved, inside already restaurated and outside will be fixed like next year. :)

I have a related question. How many 1963 Pontiac Catalina convertibles were built? My late brother Larry had a 63 Catalina convertible . Red with a red vinyl interior. 389 4 barrel automatic. To my knowledge it's somewhere in the St Louis area. In the 1990s I saw it in Webster Groves Missouri

Hi Allen, I'm not sure how many convertibles were built, however your Brother Larry had a cool car for sure. Lou
@allenkranawetter94825 ай бұрын
@@loucostabile yes Larry did. I was only able to drive it once. The last time I saw it it was in an ad. When it was in print. Same day I saw it driving on Big bend road in Kirkwood / Webster groves area

What's the difference ,between the Catalina and the bonneville ?

The Bonnie had a longer wheel base and more upscale exterior trim and a nicer interior trim. Sometimes they’re the same size and it’s just a difference of engine sizes, and trim.
@Irishfan5 ай бұрын
Bonnieville was the top of the line. It was more luxurious than the Catalina, it had some different trim on the exterior. I think, maybe the tail light were different too.
