Seemingly out of contention heading into the final nine holes, Billy Casper rallied from a seven-stroke deficit to tie Arnold Palmer, and then came from behind again in the 18-hole Monday playoff to win his second U.S. Open title. Palmer would play the final nine holes on the Lake Course a combined 9 over par on Sunday and Monday. He was 5 under on the front nine those two days.

Palmer never won another tournament of distinction ever again. One could even say Palmer's entire career was over-rated; compared to Nicklaus and Hogan, respectively.

The guy lost 3 US Opens in a playoff and the 4th time he finished 2nd he was the 1st player to break 280 and not win. Palmer could have won a dozen US Opens between 1957 and 1975.

You're just going by strokes lost, but that is not giving Casper any credit. He shot the lowest round of the day, while Palmer tied for 3rd lowest. Palmer just lost his swing on the back 9, but made some great putts (on 16 and 18) that chokers never do, while Casper made every birdie putt he looked at.

@@jonburrows8602 here is.my thought...I bogey 15 and my opponent birdies...my lead is now 3...I regroup and keep focused on the 16th tee...palmer snap hooks..lucky to bogey it....he did save thay 18th par...I agree Casper played well...but from 15 on palmer was not playing the course. He saw hogan's record in his sights...that cost him at 15..

@@mannyperales8391 But you said it was a choke in your first post. This 2nd post of yours refutes that. A choke occurs when you play scared trying to protect a lead. By your own admission (and Arnie's) he lost focus going for the record. And your reference to the 16th leaves out the fact that he made a clutch putt just to save bogey. And Casper is on record saying Palmer's 2nd shot to 18 showed him how great Arnold was ("a magnificent shot, a fantastic shot"). No choke, just carelessness and arrogance.
