This makes me feel old. This makes me feel nostalgic. This makes me grateful that I was alive when this was filmed. This makes me realise what a great country Britain was back then. This makes me glad I'm not a youngster. This makes me wish I could go back in time. This makes me both happy and sad.

I was born the year after this. I read your comment and asked my Mum, who is having her birthday today to come and read it. We both watched the video, while she's commenting on the fashions, and drivers, the lack of safety etc. Afterwards Mum said, "That was a good comment, wasn't it." It is a good comment, thanks @UncleDot

You lived through and saw? a very exciting time for race car development. Things are different now, may I suggest the technology is more mature? so the pace of change is slower, but I envy you, and it's good to hear you are still interested. Best wishes from the UK.

I’m 70 also, so feel much the same as you. I’m from Indianapolis, so my first race was roadsters at the Indy 500 in 1962. We got to see many of the great European drivers like Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill in the following years. I also liked the Chaparrals.
@randddod5 күн бұрын
Ditto, I was at that race also . The Chaperral 2F was technically very advanced and generally much faster than equivalent F1 cars of the day and probably the Ford GT Mk 4 also. Sadly, reliability problems (usually transmission) scuppered it's chances elsewhere, but fantasticly spectacular to watch nevertheless.

@randddod I do remember that they usually had transmission issues. The cars were amazing though. And they were so loud. It's probably why I have hearing problems to this day.

Fabulous rare coverage of an historically important race for so many reasons. I read accounts of that race from motorsports publications in the US. Porsche and Ferrari were stacked with guest driving talents for that championship. Then add-in the drivers for the Lola T70s . . . about the only first-rate road-racing drivers *not in that field* were Dan Gurney and Jim Clark. The open-wheel drivers of that era to cross-over into sports cars competitions is what made it a special time for racing; the likes never to be seen again.

I was there that day, aged 16, and travelled by train and bus to get there. I watched the whole race at Clearways, just by the pit entrance. When the race ended, the whole crowd along the pit straight hopped over the fence, down the bank and on to the track as the winner came round on his slowing down lap. I'd never seen that before and, slightly guiltily, my friend and I joined. I still have the photo of Phil Hill I took. It was his last race and Mike Spence was killed the following year at Indianapolis.

Great summary of The Golden Eras of Racing. You forgot Egbert 'Eppie' Wietzes, the Dutch-born Canadian who was disqualified from his first F1 drive at the 1967 Canadian GP for illegal outside assistance. His next F1 drive was at the 1974 Canadian GP. Factoid: Wietzes was the driver of the first ever safety car in Formula One history, a Porsche 914. However, when the car was first used, it took the incorrect position, placing a car 1 lap down. It took several hours after the race to determine the winner and sort out the confusion. The pace car would not be used again for another two decades..!

A great race. I was in the crowd that day - makes me feel old. The throttle cable of my Fiat 500 snapped on the way home. This is a Cultural Classic. 1967 was my favorite year for F1 -- the best looking cars from that year -- Lotus 49, Ferrari 312, Eagle Mk I. No decals, advertising or wings. Just pure, functional beauty. World Sports Car Championship cars were also beautiful. My first attendance was in 1967 at Canadian Grand Prix (Mosport Park) and Sebring. I was there for at least one of the BOAC 500's, although it probably wasn't this one. For a start, there was no mention of Jim Clark in a Lotus 40. I know he was there when I was, because the '40' failed coming out of Clearways and we watched Clark kick it in frustraqtion and walk back to the pits! But great cars and great racing, even though the HSE people would have a kiniption fit about all the broken cars being left where they crashed/broke. Other memorable motoring racing I was priveledged to watch were the Bank Holiday meetings at Crystal Palace, of all places! Clark and Rindt in 'works' Lotus Cortinas, cornering on three wheels around Ramp Bend and up the hill under the bridge. Such are memories.

Also good to see an actor playing him in the movie "Ferrari", when he and Moss, highly favoured to win the 1957 Mille Miglia after their famous success in Mercedes 722 in 1955, were stymied when the Maserati's brake pedal broke off. Moss apparently went around the next corner virtually on two wheels and Jenks wagged a disapproving finger at him, as if to say, "Bit early to take such chances". In reply, Moss reached down and held up the brake pedal. And that was the end of the Mille Miglia after Portago's tragic accident.

It mystifies me to this day how the Jim Hall Chaparral team got financing to compete in the entire series of endurance races for 1967. Especially so to venture to the Targa Florio race on the island of Sicily. Aside from Firestone Tires and Shell Oil, where did the financing come from? Chevrolet (ahem!) _vehemently denied_ any involvement in motorsports after the 1963 Daytona 500 debacle. Development and fabrication of the one-off 2F race car didn't come cheap, unlike the Lola T70 coupe of that era that were sold to customers. Porsche and Ferrari had its automotive sales divisions to finance the race cars development and expenses for racing. Even with the massive financial resources Ford had that year for racing, their official entries was at Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans.

Chaparral's only win in the World Sportscar Championship that year in the season ending race, despite the 2F's major technological advances. I read Phil Hill complained that Hall's decision to use small aircraft batteries to save weight resulted in numerous avoidable starter problems. It was a great win, but the big 7 litre Chevy engines were banned for the following year, and Hill was then left out of Hall's Can-Am plans for 1968, deciding to run just one car in the series. Sadly, Hill's co-driver, Mike Spence was killed only 10 months later in Indy 500 practice.
