Fantastic sound of the Matra V12, compare that to today's hybrids. Pesca won three Le Mans as he wasn't hard on the car, the start drivers, Cevert and Beltoise always caned the car with the inevitable consequences. Graham Hill in 72 and Gerard Larrouse in 73/74 were Pescas co drivers . Thanks for this gem. Had my 36th visit to the Sarthe this year, a fabulous 11 days.

Once I read about Matra tests on Monza, and how everybody was shocked, when Cevert went through Parabolica flat out. They recognized it based on engine sound - now I know what sound it could be. Thank you!

Superbe ! Avec les commentaires de Pesca c'est géant. Pour avoir rattrapé et suivi une Matra (F1) j'ai pu voir comme ces autos anciennes etaient instables en piste. La moindre erreur se payait cash à une époque où tous les dispositifs de sécurité midernes n'existaient pas.

​​@@ourafilmesJe sais. Moi aussi j'ai eu des Hewland. Et même des Renault encore plus lentes... Et j'ai eu l'occasion de suivre une Matra F1 il y a une dizaine d'années au Vigeant. Le V12 pousse fort, mais ça tient par terre comme une savonette dans une baignoire. Il n'y a quasiment pas d'appui aero, des pneus "en bois" et la coque, toute F1 qu'elle est ne vaut pas une coque carbone de F3 moderne. C'est haut sur pattes, ça prend du roulis en courbe, ça pique au freinage. Ça se met en travers dès le point de corde. Le pilote est obligé de soulager pour ne pas finir en tête-à-queue. Vingt metres derrière, on profite de la musique qui sort des 12 tubes, mieux encore que si on était au volant. Inoubliable !

I "watched" this year's race, which is to say, I put it on the DVR to watch later. The modern 24 hours is not what it once was, a true 24 hour race, for example Mr Pescarolo here. Today's racing consists of safety cars, "slow zones" (?) for some reason with endless waving of yellow flags (cleaning the track, removing junked cars along the side of the road, and God know whatever else the organizers dream up.) We're all for safety, of course, but sometimes it rains in the Sarthe, which used to mean wet tires and driving more cautiously. Now of course it's 3 safety cars and endless enjoyment watching the cars go at slow speed, again, and again, and again, lap after lap, after lap, as the minutes and hours tick by. With the DVR now, you simply fast forward! Don't you wish you could do that during the actual race? It's fun watching these old films, especially the Mulsanne, which once was a true, straight blast, with the white-painted tree trunks to make sure you don't hit them (!). Nowadays you can't find a track in Europe that has been emasculated by chicanes and other safety features. And then there's the weird hybrid whistle inside the car as it "shifts" gears. I think today's race organizers truly hate the fans.

L'évolution des environs du circuit est impressionnante, et hélas pas dans le bon sens. A l'époque le circuit était en pleine campagne. Aujourd'hui, à l'exception de la section Mulsante-Arnage qui est encore dans les bois, le circuit est environné par les hangars des zones d'activités. Le charme n'est plus le même. Les tours de piste filmés à bord d'une voiture à l'époque sont relativement nombreux mais c'est la première fois que je vois celui-là.

Still the greatest sounding Racing V12 ever built for both Sports car prototypes and F1 that Matra V12 for tye time it was built and even with many current hypercars sporting high reving V12 power units none sound has good as this car from near half a century ago. To be fair the the new cars, everything is Decibels limited now, anybody who has not seen a old historical Race or Rally car running will not understand just how loud these cars were compared. I mean the overrun on the downshift and the induction sound are now mostly things of the past. I am guessing this was shot by the Elf film team and incar french pionners that also fitted Cameras on special mounts to film these laps, you do not see a lot of their none F1 in or oncar fillms. Laps of the Gods were two such collections that could be found on VHS tape back in the 80's and well into the late 90's and early 00's if you searched hard. Those only delt with Elf sponsored F1 cars. Luckly they were lated transferred to DVD format and maybe Blue Ray. Formats. But thanks for this rare film.😅

@@ourafilmes y’a plein de choses à dire, on peut comparer à la voix d’autres commentateurs, Franck Montagny, par exemple est un commentateur ancien ancien pilote qui est l’extrême opposé de Pescarolo, en matière de tonalité et de mise en ambiance. Jacques, Villeneuve et Jacques Lafitte ont une voix un peu plus chiante comparable à celle de Pescarolo. Bref c’est un sujet passionnant.
