Didn’t know about Mario’s ability to go OVER 100 miles on a tank of fuel…while leading. What would have happened if Goldsmith hadn’t spun….Mario shouldnt have been able to make 2 more laps without pitting.

Of course, a number of laps had already been run under caution by then (there had already been two caution periods), and the reason they were three wide when Goldsmith spun out in an incident that also took out Cale Yarborough, was because Mario was about to pit, having pulled to the bottom of the track, so he was pitting that lap. He just got plain lucky Goldsmith's spin occurred at that instant. It might also be for that reason why the Holman-Moody team held him in the pits a little longer on his final stop, because they needed to make sure his fuel tank was filled, because he was very marginal on fuel to make it to the end, even though several laps were run under caution following David Pearson's blown engine.
