I attended the '68 Firecracker 400. My grandfather lived in Daytona Beach Shores. That record average speed (167mph+) stood for a good number of years

Cool to see and hear about early examples of innovation such as cool suits and in-dash caution lights. Also admittedly I had no clue Cale and Lee Roy WEREN'T related.😂😂

My having read Cale's autobiography, some details here: Although Cale and Lee Roy were not related, they were the best of friends, having started in stock car racing around the same time and shared similar struggles in their early years. Away from the track, they'd share transportation rides, both on roadways and in airplanes. Cale recalled giving Lee Roy car rides from the airport when the occasion called for Lee Roy needing a ride. It was one of those rides after Lee Roy's horrendous crash at the Texas World Speedway that Cale noted a change with Lee Roy, as Lee Roy was especially quiet and seemed mentally out-of-focus at that time. Cale's autobiography book impressed me, as it was _his_ life story, yet, he devoted several pages about Lee Roy in that same book. The details of Lee Roy's decline in life, while it made for a compelling read, was sad, indeed!

Paul Goldsmith would have been a great color commentator on race broadcasts if he was given a chance.

How on EARTH can ONE car run off to a TWO LAP LEAD BY HIMSELF as the cpmpetitors behind are drafting? Typical nascar
@WaltGekko
@WaltGekko 11 ай бұрын
Back in the day, that was not unusual. That I believe is one reason NASCAR has stage racing now, mainly to prevent one car from dominating like we saw last year in the all-star race where were it not for a competition caution, Kyle Larson would have won by likely two or more laps if it were all green.

@@WaltGekko true and true. Larsons people did their best to remind us why the place closed down in the first place. Behind Larson there was some good racin’ though.

@@MrChristopherHaas I was really talking more in general. I think NASCAR greatly fears even on a super-speedway an all-green race where one car dominates to where it wins by multiple laps.

@@WaltGekko understood. ill tell ya what theres no way one car is going to simply muscle its way ahead of the pack in todays nasacar at the 2 1/2 mile tracks…or Atlanta
