1967 Kansas at Oklahoma

This is The 11/18/1967 Kansas at Oklahoma game. It is a color film with radio audio. Pepper Rodgers was in his first year at Kansas and after an 0-4 start the Jayhawks figured his system out and became a threat to every team they played. Oklahoma was en route to a Big eight Championship and an Orange bowl win over Tennessee. Give the young Jayhawks a year and they might have won this game. It was the next to the last game of the year and, if they had won they would have been in the drivers seat for the Big Eight Orange Bowl bid by virtue of a head to head win over OU. As it was OU was a little too tough. Led by QB Bobby Douglas, John Riggins brother Junior Riggins, and John Riggins the next year, The Jayhawks won the conference and came within a little bad luck of ending a long Penn State winning streak in the 1/1/69 Orange Bowl. I claim no rights to the film or the audio but I did author this combination.

Oklahoma has a starting offensive lineman in this game that's listed at being under 200 lbs. Kansas has one under six feet tall. Oh, how things have changed. BTW, Junior Riggins, the starting RB for Kansas, is the older brother of pro football Hall of Famer John Riggins.

I was an 11 year-old sitting in the south end zone bleachers that day. Steve Zabel caught the winning TD pass right in front of me. The 67 Sooners are still my favorite team ever.

Broadcast was from Norman's hometown station, KNOR AM 1400, now KREF. All Norman commercials, as it seems the network didn't have sponsors and let the stations sell their own ads. Any of those businesses still around today?

I noticed at halftime they were bragging about "the new" Adams Center residential towers at OU.... They just tore those down this year.

Wow! Lifelong Jayhawk. I remember hearing that OU fans threw oranges on the field. Pepper Rodgers turned around KU in quick fashion.

Eddie Hinton was 1st round draft choice of the Baltimore Colts. (MD is a horse breeding state). In those days the QB called the plays. Unitas targeted Hinton, he dropped it.
