1967 Plymouth Fury 3 Rearend Upgrade

The 1967 Plymouth fury 3 was making bad rearend noises and was in need of rearend attention. My solution was to replace it all with an upgraded chunk with 2.94 gears, new green axle bearings, and new u joints in a rebalanced driveshaft. After some tuning, this car will be ready to cruise the road again with it's Commando big block 440.

If memory serves, the 741 has a 1 5/8" pinion shaft, the 742 1 7/8", the 489 1 7/8". But the 489 pinion shaft is tapered, abd uses a crush sleeve for pinion depth, where the 741 and 742 use solid spacers. 20 years ago, I bought the aluminum performance center section out of the Mopar Performance catalogue. Interestingly, it used a 742 gear set, so MP considered it to be stronger. The trick my machinist taught me for a 489 is to crush the sleeve to the right pinion depth and a good pattern, then take it out and machine a solid sleeve to that height. Side note, the 742 was used through 1968. The 489 started in 1969. Oh, one more thing. My machinist insisted the stock tapered bearings are stronger than the "green" axle bearings, and years later I read a tech article by Richard Ehrenberger where he said the same. I had to use the green bearings, because sometime before I bought it, my Super Bee bearings had failed on one side, ruining the housing for the OEM tapered bearings. Really enjoy your channel, and your mellow tone. Thank you!

I misspoke above Joe, the 742 has a 1 3/4" pinion shaft, but you caught that I'm sure. Damned phones are tough to type on. 😊 I really do enjoy your channel. Greetings from West of Seattle, from a guy whose dad was a top mechanic at a little Chrysler Plymouth dealership when he was a kid, and on the other side, whose Swede grandpa drove nothing but Dodges. Haha, guess I was hit with both barrels.

I always run a can of liquid gumout thru the tank before tinkering with the carb even if I plan on rebuilding it just to ensure that the fuel system is cleaned out. In fact, back in the sixties and seventies once I had a carb tuned to an engine it was a once-a-month ritual as they didn't have enough detergent in the gas back then, I think that was a day or two before your time. If that were my 440 it would be getting a new Edelbrock 800cfm AVS no questions asked.

741 is the weaker small pinion. 742 is the better or later 489 case. 742 clutch limited slip is better than the 489 cone type. It's not 'ideal' to remove the pinion yoke on those because there's a collapsible one-time use crush collar for the pinion bearing pre-load. I've seen people get away with it, but it's not the right way to do it. it has some effect on the backlash. Nice Fury! Looks pretty clean.

Very nice old car Joe. I can tell that Fury is a cruiser. I know someone said this and they were correct. The Primary and Secondary brake shoes are definitely backwards. I agree to Joe looks like the rear differential has been in and out a couple of times. The silicone tells that story. I would definitely like that 2.93 instead of the 2.76. I like 3.23's myself for road gears. Anyway, cool old car. Nice work Joe. Thanks for sharing.

I drive a 383 Fury full size since 1988. It has the Standard 293 rear but I Always wished it had the longer 276. Revs just too high at normal cruising Speed 75-80mph

@@bigblockjalopyWell bigblock I am very glad that you like what you like. As for me experience speaks for itself. 1967 GTX 440 3.23 and a auto trans. 150mph speedometer and the 3.23 gears were perfect. .484 284° Purple Shaft. 3.23 gears were the perfect road gear. Have a nice day.

@@edsmachine93 Maybe it has got something to do, that we dont have a speed limit. I would like to cruise around 2000rpm, like in newer cars. I hate wear and gas is very expensive over here. You can easily keep up with new cars, but only briefly. It revs at almost 6K at 160mph
@bigblockjalopy
@bigblockjalopy Жыл бұрын
Something is lose, or needs adjustment on your suspension/steering. That constant steering correction is not normal. With a 440 torque I would have left the highway gear rear in place.
@JustMoparJoe

I agree on the front end. This car actually has 235/75 series tires on it. It’s amazing that since I checked with the gps vs. speedometer,but now within 1-2 mph of accurate.

@@JustMoparJoe I have almost all early 60s car magazines/road tests. Mopars were the only cars with speedos that read SLOW back then, so I don't doubt yours is almost correct, just like that in my 60 Fury, almost spot on, GPS checked.
