I have a smaller version of that cleaner. I cleaned pistons in it with a solution called Greez off. I got it in a parts store. If you find it, it works well. 1 hour for a piston & rod combo and there was not a speck of carbon or anything left on them. Basically ready for rings & installation!

Depending on what I’m doing I will use Simple Green / Super Clean / Evaporust / Dawn and water in my small HF ultrasonic cleaner. It’s like a shop, no matter how big it is you’ll wish it was bigger 😂 I’m as tight as they come, I purchase the bucket of evaporust. It lives up to the hype and is reusable multiple times.

I've been using the dial-type ultrasonic like that for 5yrs now!! I do mostly carburetors and valve-bodies for transmissions and the heat/vibratory action really works!! I use aluminum safe concentrated water-soluble Simple Green (the aircraft type is clear) which is guaranteed not to corrode aluminum if mixed to the proper ratio. I run it on max heat and usually one pass does the trick on the gummiest valve body or carburetor. On Holley carbs, you can remove the soft plugs in the metering blocks and rescue them!! A definite must have for non invasive cleaning!!

I use a 50/50 mix of vinegar and 92% Isopropyl alcohol along with a 1/4 cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid. I preheat the solution on the stove to 100 degrees and pour it into the ultrasonic cleaner. The solution works well and not expensive.

I use a heavy duty concentrated degreaser from Home Depot. I usually use it 50/50 however you can use it at 100% too. I use mine mostly as a final clean up before I plate or powder coat parts. Evaporust would work but it seems to evaporate quickly especially when heated. If you are purchasing a large ultrasonic cleaner like the 30 liter size make sure it has a drain.

Thanks Joe - always so much to learn here from you and also from all the responses. I hade used an old crock pot from goodwill just to remove yellow paint from bolts and nuts with similar solution, but didn’t have the ultrasonic feature. With tedious work with a hand wire brush it did get the job done. I do understand the thought of buying so much evaporust. I will say that I have had god success on my mild steel trailer bracket parts, but I never tried more critical car parts that need to be”turn out right” and not damaged. My 1/4” steel brackets are not critical or delicate parts. Was that 80 degrees a Celsius number?

LA's Totally Awesome works very well, but the newer formula will darken aluminum. You don't have to get to strong with the concentration of soap. Zep has a powdered detergent that we use at work, it is safe for aluminum as long as the solution is somewhat clean.
@JustMoparJoe3 ай бұрын
Thanks Mike! I just got 5 gallons of Awesome to try and see.
@gavinmclaren94163 ай бұрын
Hi Joe. I would try some dishwasher detergent, the powder type. Generic is ideal. It is a pretty strong base (sodium carbonate) with enzymes that activate above 40 C. This combination is an extremely effective degreaser. I would use about 1 cup powder for 10 L, or 3 cups for a full load of water. Use that as a starter, but don't be afraid to try a bit more. Be careful with aluminum and experiment with a non-critical part before using this solution on something expensive. Heat the water first so the powder dissolves readily. And be careful, this solution would be hard on skin. However, my chemical engineer's instinct tells me that this is probably the most cost-effective degreaser that you will find.
@JustMoparJoe3 ай бұрын
Excellent idea. I had thought about Tide detergent as well.
@gavinmclaren94163 ай бұрын
Tide would work well. Fresh out of high school I got a job in a big boiler shop and I would come home after a shift covered in sweat, grease, and metal shavings. I used Tide as my all-purpose cleaner for everything, including skin and hair. Regular shampoo wouldn't touch the dirt in my hair until I had "pre-washed" with a slurry of Tide powder and warm water. Tide and water would be a fine choice. I recommended dishwasher detergent because of its heat-activated enzymes; Tide and other laundry detergents don't have these, and also I think that generic dishwasher powder would be cheaper to use, especially when filling a 30L tank.
