1967 Pontiac Tempest Le Mans 326 Convertible
The 1967 Pontiac Tempest is widely considered one of the most beautiful Poncho’s of all time. Its clean, slab sides, vertical stacked headlights, trademark split Pontiac grille and Kamm back trunk/tail lights made for a clean package that looks as good today as when it prowled the streets in the 60’s. The Le Mans version was the premium package over lesser Tempests and included carpeted lower door panels, deluxe steering wheels, courtesy lighting, and wheel covers. The Le Mans was the basic platform for the legendary GTO, which initially was just an option for the Le Mans, but due to its popularity, became a separate series in 1966. (Many people have “cloned” GTO’s from Le Mans cars, as the principle differences are bolt-on badges, etc. The value of “cloned” GTO’s is almost double a stock Le Mans, but it would be a crime to clone this car due to its high originality, excellent condition and original 326 V8.) The optional engine in this Le Mans is a version of the 326 in³ Pontiac V8 with a two-barrel 250 hp that runs on regular fuel option; the transmissions is a two-speed automatic, a version of Buick's Super Turbine 300. Pump gas is fine to use in this classic. The 1967 Pontiac Le Mans got GM's safety package, which included a dual-circuit braking system, energy absorbing steering column, steering wheel, and interior, shoulder belt anchors, four-way hazard flashers, and a new directional signal control that could be "flicked" for lane changes. This Le Mans is ideally equipped with its original, powerful 326 V8, power steering, dual- master cylinder power brakes, power convertible top (brand new motor), bucket seats, console, AM radio and Pontiac’s famous Rallye II wheels with factory color-matched red lug nuts and center caps. Tires are 15” Michelin white-wall radials, which enhance the already excellent handling of this “wide-track”. For a collector, part of being an original car is original sheet metal. This example wears all its original body panels and intact frame, original interior, trunk floor, etc., which is explained by the fact that its former owner garaged and babied the car for the past 35 years. Recently this car received an oil change with filter, new brake fluid, anti-freeze, air filter, etc. It has been professionally detailed including engine and trunk with an eye for originality, and would undoubtedly perform well at any of the Car Shows on Long Island this Summer. But if you simply want one of the most perfectly styled cars of the 60’s, one that still turns heads today for its pure lines, a classic that drives like new, providing comfortable top-down cruising for you plus 4 of your crew… and will continue to appreciate in value, this Le Mans is an ideal choice.
