Күн бұрын

The 10-0 Alabama Crimson Tide, who had won national championships in 1961, 1964, and 1965, finished the 1966 season as the only undefeated and untied team in the nation, and yet were not given any share of the national championship in favor of Notre Dame and Michigan State, who tied one another. In that era, the media selected national champions before bowl season, in which both Notre Dame and Michigan State refused to participate. Thus, the #3 Tide entered their Sugar Bowl with the 9-1, #6 Nebraska Cornhuskers with a chip on their shoulder. The first Super Bowl was played 13 days after this game. After his Green Bay Packers won the game, head coach Vince Lombardi was asked how it felt to have the best football team in the world. Lombardi responded, "I don't know, we haven't played Alabama yet."

Northern Sportscaster and media hated the SEC then and still do now! Only reason Alabama did not get #1 when Mich st and Noter dame had a tie.

@Stephen Forfer In 1966 Alabama was undefeated and had zero ties. They beat the #3 team in the Sugar Bowl 34 - 7. They were the best team in the country. The SEC has won 10 out of the last 16 National Championships. 3 out of the other 6 titles were won by the ACC. That comes to 13 out of 16. You are the one bringing up the civil war. Yall have been getting you ass kicked for so long by college football teams from the South you have to bring up the civil war because of you Napoleon Complex from the inability to compete.

@Stephen Forfer What happened to usc in 1971 when Alabama went to southern cal? You can hang on to your bitterness and racial hatred forever. You can bring up the civil war in a conversation about integration that was changed 50 years ago. You need something to hold on to so you can be angry and blame everyone else for any perceived slight.

Please quit you whining about northern media. Two years before this, Alabama was voted national champion while _losing_ the 1965 Orange Bowl to Texas. That result caused the AP to switch to voting after the Bowl games. When Michigan State lost in the Rose Bowl in '66, it was Alabama that was voted champion. So ideal timing beyond Alabama's control that enabled them to be voted champion twice. Media felt luck had been on their side long enough. That had nothing to do with them being northern.

You are forgetting that Alabama was voted national champion while losing the 1965 Orange Bowl to Texas. That result caused the AP to switch to voting after the Bowl games. When Michigan State lost in the Rose Bowl in '66, it was Alabama that was voted champion, which wouldn't have happened if the switch in voting timeline had not been made. Yes, they lost the vote this time, but through ideal timing of events beyond their control, they were voted champion two prior years.

I hate that Bama v Nebraska never happened from 1991-1996. I would have loved to see how Coach Stallings would have approached the Husker offense.

While Bear Bryant was clearly a marvelous coach, the fact remains that the Crimson Tide was a "Lily White" Team. Bryant tried to integrate Alabama long before it finally happened in the early Seventies. Even Bryant's finest early teams would have been better had they had an integrated roster. After this victory, it would be another eight years before the Tide would win another Bowl game. More than that, Alabamas three "Claimed Titles" all had a serious " Taint" to them. In the 1965 Orange Bowl, Alabama lost to Darrell Royal and Texas 21-17. In the 1966 Orange Bowl, the Tide outplayed the Cornhuskers in winning 39-28. Yet, they also lost a game and tied one in the regular season. While the 1966 Tide was perhaps Bryant's finest team, they also had a nod from "Lady Luck." Alabama squeaked past Tennessee 11-10 on a short missed field goal by the Volunteers. Even in the 1974 Sugar Bowl game, an Alabama team that claimed a National Title, was beaten by Notre Dame, 24-23. Had Alabama been "All In" on integration before this time, their teams could have reached an almost unbelievable level. LIKE THE SEC OF TODAY. The Southeastern Conference is in a category unto itself because of one reason. All the glorious black talent in the region produces the finest football in the nation. With no close second!! LSU and Georgia have both won National Championships in this era. Even Bama's hated rival the Auburn Tigers, won a Title with a Cam Newton led squad. At the top of the heap is Alabama itself. Every year the National Title goes through the Tide in some way. And when they win a Championship it is won on the field. Not in an opinion poll. The "Mythical National Championship" no longer exists. Good riddance to that bigone era.

Bama also could easily lay claim to 1945 - they were the only team to finish 10-0 and they won the Rose Bowl. That should be a shared title with Army. It's frustrating, because some of the titles that we do claim are less clear cut than ones that we don't would be!

If Bama had not turned the ball over against MSU and Notre Dame in' '80 the Tide would have been matched up against Georgia in which I believe Bama would have beaten, barring any turnovers. Bama was the best team in the country in 1980 regardless what the haters may say. But turnovers will cause even the best to get beat.

AP agreed not to give the National Championship to Alabama because they had no Black football players. They knew Alabama was the best but wanted to send a message to the University. I guess it must have worked.

Alabama had 5 black guys walk on the 1967 squad although none made it to the varsity team. Wilbur Jackson was the first black man to be give a scholarship in 1970. That was the same year USC ran all over Alabama at home 42-21 with a black RB, Sam Cunningham. Most people give that game credit for integrating the team but they had already been working up to it since 1967. Like I said, Wilbur Jackson was already on the team during that USC game. EDIT: My point is that I don't think it had so much to do with integration as it did fatigue. Those middle-upper class white men could care less about black guys playing or not. They were sick of Alabama winning all the time just like they are now. Fortunately, the Associated Press doesn't vote on a champion anymore.

Uh...no. 1964 Civil Rights Act and federalizing Alabama national guard pretty much did that regardless of outcome of a football game...to which Bama returned the favor in rematch out west anyway with still an all-white team. Racial myths and obsessions killing this country for generations.

'09, '11, '12. '10 was Scam Newton yr. Kick Six - Cade Foster crap was '13. We were hugely outcoached in Ohio St disaster (plus started wrong qb that season). To win four in a row, it would've required Kick Six-Foster mess be fixed AND win Ohio St disaster.
