My father’s first car was a 1968 Impala, I want to get the same car as a tribute to him. He is still alive.

Neighbor had a 68 Caprice with the 396 2bbl. I never really saw it run hard at all. Owner believed you just babied them and they would last forever. He always called Dad every few weekends or so and have a problem with the car. Dad would go over and test drive it and return. The guy would always tell him he didn't know what he did to it but it worked. Month after month this went on for years. I asked my Dad what he did, after he got back from his test drive. Dad just said, the guy never blows the soot out of it.

Your Dad and I had the same experience with cars it sounds like. My Mother and several other members of the family got so they would want me to wash/drive their cars every once in a while because they always seem to run better after I did. Like your Dad all I did was blow the carbon out of them. Sometimes I got carried away and almost wrecked. The old bias ply tires didn't grip well especially after they got some age on them.

@@JT-SE-OHIO Oh gosh, my aunt and her brake issues. Every car she owned I can remember dad going to the parts store and loading up the cab of the truck with brake parts to do her car. It was about an every 2 year thing, all 4 brakes every time.... "Gerald, something is going on with my brakes again." Rarely less than a 3 rotor or drum job with her....

My grandma had a ‘68 Impala 396 4-door, it was fairly quick and I believe to this day the most comfortable car I’ve ever ridden in. This was in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, when I was just a kid. She drove so infrequently that the 93-octane and terrible fuel mileage didn’t matter, she’d had the car since my grandfather died in ‘70 and his life insurance/pension came through, she wanted a classy car and chose that one, she didn’t care whether it was fast. My old man and I would tune it up and take it out for a drive now and again to blow the carbon out of it and wake it up, she just putted around town in it, so it would load up pretty good after a little while. Beautiful car. She traded it off eventually for a G-Body 307 Regal that would become my first car once she didn’t feel safe driving anymore, what a different time when cars like that were just old used cars, not worth anything.

Had one of these in high school. Non SS, but still had the 325hp 396, Cragars. Went through a lot of starters on that car, don't know why. (Heat soak I imagine) Sold it to my neighbor, who kept the engine and trans, crushed the car. Kinda wish I still had it. I really liked the lines.

I had a 68 Impala with a small block 307 2 barrel and 2 speed power glide. My Dad and I rebuilt it and restored not to all original as I was young and couldn’t afford that. But never the less I loved that car. Not fast but it was a beauty and had a nice rumble

Gorgeous. It almost seemed Chevy tried to hide the fact it was an SS with those tiny badges which were so prominent years before and also for the ‘69. I think you could also still get the SS427 in ‘68, which really amped up the performance and had more prominent badging

The optional & specific "Z24" package (SS427) was available '67-'69. In '68 it cost $542.45 & 1,778 paid the piper.

I believe the term was “it couldn’t punch its way thru a wet paper bag”, while testing a ‘69 396 2bbl, and at one point the front tire was about ready to come off the rim during a corner.

Interesting to see the SS package on the formal top/custom coupe body #47. More often seen, on the body #87 hard top/“fastback“/Sport coupe. Steve, one minor correction per my Library research. The RPO Z03 ($179.05) Impala super sport option included special all vinyl interior, Strato bucket seats, center console shift with automatic or four-speed manual transmission and SS wheel covers. (I suppose a factory bench seat could be optioned back in). The tail lights double rings always seen on caprice models but not always on the super sport models. Steve, thank you for what you do. I enjoy your reviews.

My parents had a '68 Impala SS in this body style with the 327 - in the spring of '68, they bought their first house, bought a new car, and conceived me. ;) Ours was white with black vinyl roof. I think we had it until '75 or so, then my mother insisted on a station wagon and no more coupes after that. :(

Just my old opinion but that was a high point in GM cars. Seems I recall the old Impala also came with a 427 if you really wanted hp. Ah those big steering wheels... what a feel. Key in the dash. High beam switch on the floor. You could sit on the hood without denting it. Bias ply tires rather sucked but you can't have it all. I had an Olds from that year. Caprice was the luxury version of an Impala... rare electric windows.. tilt and telescopic steering... big stuff then.
