I'm the second owner. my uncle was the original owner and out of all his cars.. the dart gts was the 1 i wanted 🙂 it's a 383 4 speed. i only drive it on weekends and maybe twice a month. i baby it to keep it in mint condition. for me only being 30, I'm lucky to have such a car.

when i was a kid i owned a 1968 dodge dart gts 383, mine was dark green, but on the hood it white around the two humps on the hood. otherwise it looks identical, except for color, bought mine for a $1000 ca, mine came with the dana 60 rear diff, 727 automatic, and the 383 4 barrel and the dual point distributor, the engines they came with are the 340, 383, and the 426 hemi, and they are awesome to drive.

You asked about the 440, here's what I know. The 440 Dart GTS was a very limited run in '69 and there was also the very rare Hemi-Dart with the 426 Hemi for the racers, but you basically had to have factory connections to get one. The lower deck hieght of the 383 engine makes it an easier fit, if you think the 383 looked tight, you should try squeezing a 440 into one of these things. That's tight!

That is a nice looking Dart, I know where a 68 GTS is setting, it hasn't moved in over 20 years. I've been tempted to pick it up, but I like the B and E bodies a little more than the A bodies. That GTS would be a nice ride. This one here is very nice, thanks for sharing.

Wow, what a beauty. I love that color. according to the sheet on the windshield it is candy apple red. Not a true factory color but it is very close to a color offered in 1965 called Medium Red Metallic. Maybe out in the sun the difference would be more obvious. I'm glad to see the old girl restored so she won't end up at a crusher.

If it was a big block car it was a GTS and the 440 was never offered from the factory, only the 383 was offered in '68 and '69! If it was a 440 or a Hemi it was put in by a Mopar dealer like Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge! Mr. Norm would install bigger engines and warranty them even if the Dodge factory would not! If it wasn't for Mr. Norm the Dart would never have had a big block in it, his staff figured out how to get a 383 in it! Hurst built the '68 Hemi Dart with Mopar supplied parts! =D

@Mopar68Sharpshooter - All Small Block Mopars were the same block family(LA motors only not the old style 318s) sharing common crankshafts with just bigger bore sizes. The exception is the 360 which had different main journal sizes & a bigger stroke than the 273, 318 & 340s did. Chrysler dropped the 273 4v version in '68 with the intro of the 340. The 318 was a 2v engine only until the late 70's.

@Lonewolf3165 Very true. And correct. Thank you for adding... but just to further add to the topic ( and only for those that do not know..) the 273 v8, is essentially the same block as the 318 and they also came with 4bbls as an option, the difference's were the size of the bore. And its compression ratio. I have a 318 in my 68 dart GT it has a 2bbl carb instead of the 4bbl.

Ok guys here is the Scoop, in late 1967 Dodge put 383 Four Barrels in 467 GT, and Called them GT-Sports, they had either Borg Warner T-10 Four Speeds with 373:1 Dana 60s or 727 Torque-flites with 323:1 Dana 60s. in1968 the Model was redesignated GTS With the New 340 Four Barrel or the 383 Four barrel with Little changes for 1969, But in 1969 the Dart Swinger was introduced as a Lower priced Alternative to the GTS with the same Power Trains (although a Swinger could be Equipped with the 225 slant six or 318 V8) Mid year in 1969 500 Darts were sent to Spaulding Dodge and Were Equipped with 440's and one such example was sent to Car and Driver magazine for Evaluation and Review, But the night it was delivered it was stolen and repainted primer grey and rebadged a 383 and was beating everything at a local Drag Strip (true story). The R-Code Darts were Not badged GTS they left the plant engineless and were sent to another shop to have the 426 Hemi's installed They had Fiberglass fenders, hood, and Front bumper, the battery was moved to the trunk and the rear wheel openings were cut out to allow for Drag Slicks Dodge A100 Van Bucket Seats, None were Street Legal. I know My 1960s Darts. I had 3 1967s 1 GT-Sport 383, 1 GT 273 Four barrel and 1 GT 318. Feel Free to message me with questions.

The interesting thing about the GTS was that there were NO Dart emblems on them. The Swinger had Dart badging on the glove box door, front fenders and also on the trunk lid. But, the GTS only had GTS badges.

just a FYI to anyone who might find this video. this is a very nice and mostly original 383 Dart. however, the wheels are NOT original to a 1968 model Dart. those wheels were Plymouth/Dodge new "Rally" wheels that came out for the first time on the new 1970 model Mopars. the OEM wheels on a 68 Dart would have been some type of hubcaps.

The Dart with the 383 engine came out in about February or March of 1967. They were 1967 models. If I remember right they were rated at 285 HP. There were about 600 1969 Darts with the 440 engine made. All of the 69 440's had automatic transmissions.
@ottoandhanzblack2175
@ottoandhanzblack2175 3 ай бұрын
To my knowledge the 383 was originally fit into the dart body by Mr. Norms Grand Spaulding Dodge in Chicago. He was instrumental in doing this so Dodge would have a smaller light weight muscle car to compete with the mustang and camaro.

mopar offered 198/225/318/340 & 383 & 440 only between '68-'69. Power suffered due to restrictive manifolds 2 fit the tight bay. The 383 '69'cuda was down 25 hp from 325! Tight A bodies til '72
@BloodstainedSinner
@BloodstainedSinner 10 жыл бұрын
With the power steering removed and a tight ratio manual steering put in, you could put some nice headers on the 383 GTS and gain 60-80 horsepower.
@paulhunter9613
@paulhunter9613 6 жыл бұрын
You won't get 60-80 hp changing to headers, 20-30 max. The hp manifolds on the car now does a nice job and won't roast wires and anything else like headers will

GTS was only available with the 340 and the 383. The factory did not install the 440 or 426 Hemi. Limited edition Darts that were equipped with 440 or Hemi engines started out as a rolling chassis from the factory and had the engines custom fitted by an outside vendor (Hurst).

karl jacobson Not a bad decision! Have the heads ported, put a bigger cam, around about a Comp xe268, new carb, intake manifold, and headers. Then that little 318 will put down better times than any 383 car.

440 Darts were not made that way at the factory. They started out as 383 cars minus the engine, and the 440 "engine swap" was performed by Hurst.
@ToddWright2
@ToddWright2 5 жыл бұрын
Uhh, yes they were. In 1969 only. The Mr. Norm's GSS Darts of 1968 laid the framework for the '69 GTS 440. The '68 Hemi Darts and Barrcudas were the Hurst specials.

@@ToddWright2 You are right. I had a friend in college at Syracuse that had a 69 440 Dart GT factory vehicle. It was a medium green with a black vinyl roof. It was an automatic and it did not have PS or PB. We used to call it the Spanish Flea (he was Latino) because the car was so responsive quick. I had a 68 383 Roadrunner at the time and I couldn't get past him in a QM.

My Dart GT has 815,000 miles I don't think there original miles. I know it sounds crazy but its true, and it is the only one out of the three that is $500 away from running again. The only reason someone hasn't started a car company nowadays to make awesome cars like this is because of regulation. The government doesn't give a shit about your safety. Large corporations want (and need) regulations because it makes it more costly and more difficult for smaller companies to enter the market. Think of how easy it would be if there were no airbag, seatbelt, computer system requirements etc. You could stick an engine in a frame on wheels. safety features should be options
