1968 MGC Differential Oil Change, Front Oil Seal & Rear Cover Gasket

This upload will be a 2-for-1. I'll cover how to remove and replace the front oil seal on the rear differential. Also, I will take the opportunity to change the rear differential oil and replace the rear cover gasket. I will cover in detail how to apply Hylomar jointing compound to make a "perfect" seal according to the shop manual.

I have a leak here on my current roadster also but very modest. This is thick oil. A little flinging around down there is common and not a big concern. My last bgt had a leak here for 14 years but still ran and completed 2 European tours through the alps. Look under the car at the back axle, if no hypoid on the garage floor then dont lose too much sleep over it. Just check the axle oil level from time to time and clean up with a rag.

Since your there, replace the thrush bushing! Will tighten up and eliminate any clunk.

Hi, my nam is Andy and thanks for a clear and concise video. I have the same dif but was advised by the MG garage not to change the oil seal unless absolutely necessary as a spacer inside the dif can get crushed resulting in the pinion wrecking the whole dif. Did you have any issues with your dif afterwards?

Why didn't you just grind the end of a short socket extension bar, then you could use a 1/2" ratchet to undo the plug

That would have worked as well but I didn't have a disposable socket extension at the time.

Socket extension is a lot harder metal than a large bolt, to grind. Kinda waste if a good tool too, to me anyhow. Also the short ground off bolt was closer to the plate to get better leverage. Seemingly, mind was pretty tight.

What size is the nut on front of differential?

The drive shaft is also referred to as a propeller shaft in the MGC manual.
