Steve Barber's shoulder was "a little stiff." That was a running gag in Jim Bouton's "Ball Four."

Listening to this today was the first time I’ve ever heard Joe Schultz’s voice. I always had had a different voice in my head for him, a more jolly one. I guess he saved the jolly voice for the players. Great stuff - thank you for sharing!

OH MAN YOU"RE KIDDING ME !!! I cried big tears when the team was sold for 11 million ! I was in fourth grade and playing my second year of ball at 10 years old . First year I could actually throw , catch & hit at all . This is so cool and I found it on my birthday too . 59 today . I have my Pilots bat & helmet right here from bat day & helmet night . Not MY originals I wore them out decades ago . I bought off ebay . Too cool ! Thanks for this .

thank you for sharing this. I've read Ball Four a dozen times over the years and grew up listening to baseball on the radio every night. This takes me back to my childhood.
@rpc717
What a historic game! It's hard to imagine that this was Dick Enberg's first game - he even broke out an "Oh my!" It's criminal that the Pilots couldn't hang on.

Only 11,930 in attendance for an opening day game. Amazing!

Anyone who has ever read Jim Bouton's classic book "Ball Four" should enjoying listening to the first game of the Seattle Pilots. I heard a lot of familiar names, starting with the pre-game interview with Manager Joe Schultz. I can visualize Jim in the bullpen diligently taking notes for his book while all of this was going on.

To clarify, this is Enberg's first ever baseball broadcast. He had been broadcasting Indiana football/basketball UCLA basketball and Rams games prior to landing the Halos gig.

Diego Segui pitched in relief for the Pilots, in this their first ever game. 8 years later Segui started the first ever game for the Seattle Mariners-but they lost 7-0.

My mistake..Buddy Blattner had left in the off season to be the number one guy for the KC Royals. His number 2 guy in his 1st year? Hall of Famer Denny Matthews!

That's a concept! Have the manager announce/broadcast their lineup (optional will be why he chose or comment on players in said lineup)

Of course, Rigney wouldn't last the season, getting the ax later that year for Lefty Phillips after nine seasons as the Halos' only skipper up to that point. He got a measure of vindication in '70 when he won the Western Division as manager of the Minnesota Twins after replacing Billy Martin and his stormy relationship with owner Calvin Griffith..
