I was gutted when the Pilots left for Milwaukee. My dad, one of my younger brothers and I regularly to games that summer. My aunt was the nurse there at the stadium medical office. So she was able to provide free tickets for us whenever we wanted to go to a game. We recieved a couple of autographed baseballs and two baseball bats with autographs from the first baseman Don Mincher and Tommy Harper. Those were glory days for me.

Several sequels: "I'm Glad You Didn't Take It Personally" along with 10-year updates for several decades leading to its finale "Ball Four: The Final Pitch".

"Ball Four" may be THE legacy of the Pilots, even with their uniform colors being continued by the Brewers to the present. It's maybe the most culturally significant baseball book ever, and it's centered around the Pilots' season (even if the best remembered stuff in it is about the Yankees.)

Also evidently the older hotels had doors off the ground and not snug and a little mirror on the floor under the door would show the entire room or enough to spy inside from the hall. He wrote the Shoreham hotel in DC was the best for beaver shooting because it had many wings and angles to look into rooms from the roof. Bouton wrote here I am a rookie and the Yankees led by Mickey Mantle would be on the roof of the Shoreham in DC and someone would shout over to the left or over to the right whatever and everyone would be looking in a babes room.

@@jswaggart01 I'm a nut, every spring in March or so I will pick up Ball Four and read it again to get ready for the new season. Jim was so flattered when I e-mailed him that years ago. I've been reading Ball Four for over 45 years now. I picked it up in a bookstore around 1976. The late Bill Freehan wrote a book also about the 1969 season called Behind the Mask that my Dad bought for me in 1970 when I was 8 and it was similar to Ball Four but much much calmer with few juicy details. The worse thing was McLain was selfish and an asshole who Boog Powell owned and Lolich was jealous and Mayo Smith knew shit about pitching. He had the great Johnny Sain as his pitching coach and Sain is probably the best pitching coach in history but he didn't believe in running the pitchers and he was always fighting management. Sain took off one day and the team was in a slump so Mayo Smith took the pitchers and ran their asses off. Sain returns the next day and the pitchers are all pissed off and he goes into Smith's office ripping his ass off. He said something like do we use my methods that had the best staff in 1968 and won a WS or your bullshit that had shitty Detroit staffs since 1946. Less than a month later Sain quit and Detroit finished a distant second to Baltimore. I still have Behind the Mask and it's ok but not funny like Ball Four is. I can still read Ball Four and start laughing out loud it is that funny. With today's WOKE bullshit 99% of the book would be banned and Bouton banned and cancelled!

Their attendance started declining after the 1958 World Series

The Braves ownership had their eye on Atlanta for some time. One of the things I recall was no television of road or home games. In fact, they declined to televise the final 3 games in the 56 season from St Louis where the Braves we’re playing for the NL pennant.

I grew up in a suburb of Seattle. The Pilots were long gone by the time I was a kid. I remember old timers talking about the Pilots and Sick's Stadium. They focused on two things. Making fun of Sick's and hating Bud Selig. Man, they hated that guy with a passion.

I remember them giving away a lot of free Sounders tickets when I was a kid. (Early 80's) The libraries and schools would send them home with kids. My Mom loved Basketball and Baseball. She had zero interest in Soccer/football. We never ended up using any of those free tickets.

You also lost your 6th outfielder Wayne Comer who played in the 1968 World Series and batted 1.000 . He went 1 for 1 . He finished 2nd in home runs for the pilots with 15. Also Mime Marshall was ucked from the Detroit Tigers. Marshall appeared on a 1968 topps baseball card. Yet he never played for the 1968 Tigets. He played for the 1967 Tigers. However Manager Mayo Smith hated 2 pitchers. Joe Sparma and Mike Marshall were extremely educated and Mayo Smith dispised the 2 of them.

I looked and found that the 1961 HOUSTON BUFFS in the AAA AMERICAN ASSOC., a CHICUBS farm team had six guys playing a little to a lot with the MLB expansion 1962 HOUSTON COLT .45's.. DAVE GIUSTI, PIDGE BROWNE, JIM CAMPBELL(NOT THE SAME GUY WHO WAS THE DETROIT G.MGR), J.C. HARTMAN who was 19 in '61, 20 in '62, and later retired to become a policeman in HOUSTON. RON DAVIS-not the NY YANKS relief pitcher in the 70's and father of recent MLB'ER, IKE DAVIS- and DAVE ROBERTS-not the same guy as the future '70's ASTROS pitcher, or the future high draftpick third baseman of the PADRES-. I wonder if any PADRES in 1969 were on the '68 PHILLIES FARMTEAM IN SD IN THE PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE? And, what do you know.. STEVE ARLIN was on the '68 PCL's SD PADS and '69 MLB SD PADS. ARLIN was a grandson of HAROLD ARLIN, the very first MLB BROADCASTER, ever, working for KDKA RADIO IN PITTSBURGH in Aug. of 1921, less than a year after he was the first U.S. RADIO NEWSCASTER to read presidential election returns. The 1997 PHOENIX FIREBIRDS did not have any shared players with the 1998 ARIZ. DIAMONDBACKS.. I don't count '61 MINNESOTA TWINS/'60 Minneapolis Millers or, St. PAUL Saints players. I also don't count the 1971 DALLAS-FT.WORTH SPURS and the '72 TEXAS RANGERS since like the TWINS the RANGERS were not an expansion club. I also do not count the 1965 ATLANTA CRACKERS and the '66 ATL. BRAVES. There were no minor league teams in L.A. 1962 (.346)and 1963 (.326) NL batting champ with Dodgers. I think he broke his ankle in early '64 and though he played well, was never quite the same. Believe he wore #12.

I did not realize Tommy was still living. As a lifelong Dodgers fan, '62 may have been my biggest year of heartbreak. Drysdale went 25-9 and won league's ONLY Cy Young, Wills was NL MVP and broke Ty Cobbs steals record with 104. As you mentioned Tommie drove in 153 runs to go with NL batting title. Last but certainly not least, Koufax was 14-4 in July when a hand injury basically ended his season. He fin ished 14-7 and still won NL ERA title. If he stays healthy, there would have been no playoff vs. Giants and a likely WS win vs. Yankees. It was quite a season through a 10 year olds eyes! Gkad to hear the update on Tommie.

I'm also an old Dodger fan. I rooted for the Brooklyn Dodgers, mostly because they were always the underdogs and because Jackie Robinson was with the Dodgers. Dad grew up in South Pasadena and went to Pasadena Junior College and ran track against Jackie's brother Mack. Through him, Dad got to know Jackie. When the Dodgers moved to L.A. I caught most of their gams on a transistor radio with an ear plug buried deep in my pillow. I especially remember the 1959 World Series. I was statistician for the Arcadia High School baseball team which won the CIF Championship in 1965. As a reward, the team was invited to watch a game from the Dodger dugout. What a treat that was. It was great meeting all of the Dodgers. Unfortunately, I went to college in Flagstaff in 1968 and my folks moved to Portland in 1969. I've lived in the Pacific NW since then and have a Mariners and Dodgers fan.

True. The Sorianos soon ran out of money and couldnt find anyone to bail them out. Sicks Stadium was only supposed to serve as the home for a couple or three years until the new doomed stadium opened. But there was so much legal wrangling about the dome it was delayed several years. One irony is that in its day Sicks was regarded as the finest minor league park in the nation.

I was looking at the sports page of the Anchorage Times. There was a picture of a sexy young woman with a big smile squatting over a pristine trash can and dumping her Seattle Pilots pennant. I wondered why she wasn't keeping it.
