And the buying experience from 1969 to today at a Cadillac dealership is not the same. I recall visiting the dealerships back in the late 1960’s to the early 1980’s with my parents and friends. Looking at a 69 Cadillac, the salesman wore a suit and treated you like someone to respect. Test driving? Take it home for the night. I have tried to buy my first Cadillac 3 times in recent years. Salesman was not attentive, not knowledgeable about the product, dressed like he was headed to Home Depot. Each time I went to the Lexus dealership, the salesman (in a suit) was the opposite. I had to ask for the opportunity to test drive all 3 times at the Cady dealerships. I have bought 3 Lexus. Pleasure to buy, easy to own (maintenance only), and each time, the salesman had keys in hand ready for a test drive. Yes, I still want a Cadillac but it will be a collector car like yours, so I can reminisce about how Cadillac was the best in the past, and not another copycat of European style.

After two model years of the front wheel drive Eldorado with hidden headlamps, rarely seen on my walks to and from school, the new 1969 Eldorado with exposed headlamps exploded onto the streets of my hometown in numbers that had to be seen to be believed! As a result, the 1969 Eldorado became a welcomed sight on my daily treks to school with it's beautiful "wide-eyed" happy-faced front styling. Invasion of the Eldos!

I still remember the glint of the chrome bumpers, the subdued (!) tailfins, the beautiful door panels with the chrome armrests and the chrome door pulls with the courtesy lights underneath. The car always was showroom spotless, and left an indelible impression on me that has never waned. 1st and foremost, I'm a sedan/coupe guy and never have been thrilled with SUV's. Let's address the elephant in the room..., of course the Eldo is going to be way more popular than the XT6, however, they are not the same in any way except for in the cadillac name only. We are talking about analog vs. digital. I've driven an analog GM car daily with 335,000 original miles on it for 26 years, and the vehicle is 37 years old. Great vehicle, but it's time has passed as a daily driver, and now is my weekend driver. I purchased a caddy CT5 Blackwing, and I just love it with all it's digital thing going on. However, recently I had to have the brakes replaced at the dealer and they gave me a loaner..., which was a XT6. I was a little underwhelmed. The V6 in it was gutless, and originally I thought it was a 4 cyl. Inside was nice, and had plenty of features, but still I thought it was underwhelming. I suspect they will kill this model off in the next year or two and go with something electric. Personally...., I'm a fan of the 67 eldorado with the hidden headlights.

As far as exterior styling goes, the '69 ElDorado was way ahead of its time, and just absolutely stunning. You're lucky to have this beauty, and I love the color. These late 60s cars from GM were just the epitome of automotive styling. I also currently have a 2023 XT5 with the 3.6L V6 and AWD. I like it, but the transmission troubles me. It sometimes is jerky in the lower gears under moderate acceleration. I've complained to the dealer service dept, but they just tell me everything is normal, and it "performs as designed". I've been driving for nearly 60 years (mostly GM cars), and I think I know when a transmission is not performing as it should.

I respect modern Cadillac stylists, who have managed to apply a generally attractive design language to both sedans and SUVs across their lineup. I can't imagine how hard it is styling cars in today's world of regulations and cost cutting guidelines. I'd rate the XT6 above many other modern crossovers... But it's still just a modern crossover with questionable reliability and durability, and those lousy modern uncomfortable seats combined with oversized center console. I'd much rather live with fake wood grain, key buzzers, and a front bench seat with a big fold down armrest. A 1969 Eldorado will never stop being a cool car! Aside from the side effects of being a 55 year old piece of machinery- and being so thirsty- that classic Cadillac will still get you where you need to go for decades to come.

The only thing I wish it had was an airbag system to adjust the ride height for deeper snow and rougher roads.

I collect old Caddies. This comparison is not fair. The Eldo will beat up that new whippersnapper with one tire tied behind its trunk.

As you said when you slammed the El Dorado's hood, "That's a REAL car!". I totally agree.

I purchased this past Monday a new Cadillac after six years. I bought the Cadillac Escalade base. I love my older cars , but love today's technology and safety.

I'm takin that sweet classic Caddy any day of the week .. All the tech I want (basically a bluetooth sound system with speakers) can easily be retrofitted into, and hidden, in that head-turning super-dope Cadillac

I would take the1969 model any day of the week, hour of the day. Thank you for the video and comparison.

Remember that scene in "Live And Let Die", when the agent shoots the other character with a poison dart from the side mirror, and then he floors it and the Eldorado leaves like a late model C8 Corvette. That was trick photography. These Eldorados had about 260 modern horsepower, versus 4200 pound curb weight, but they had a terrible 3 speed automatic transmission, which means about 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds. These were luxury cruisers, and were never meant for performance.

Those Eldorados in that movie are actually Corvettes with custom Eldorado appearing bodys! Watch those scenes closely you'll see those Eldorados are much shorter than the standard vehicles.

@@jeffmiller3150 Interesting. Where did you read that?

@@Flies2FLL Look closely at the dashboard as he's aiming the dart. It's clearly a Corvette.

@@digitalfutur I just looked at a YT video by "Lloyd Vehicle Consulting" called "The Cars of Live and Let Die". At 6:50 you can clearly see it! That is an AWESOME bit of trivia and I hate to say it, but that car is totally cool like that! Thanx for the info! Honestly, you've got to wonder why GM didn't do this for Cadillac. The XLR was basically the same thing, so they finally got the hint.

I like this video, very honest and balanced. While I would personally take the 69' any day, I will say the interiors were always neglected in cars of this era, especially the doors. They would spend all their time and money on the dashboard and then it feels really cheap the moment you get past that. While the materials on the doors of newer cars aren't as premium feeling, they are definitely more cohesive.

The Escalade is the closest modern equivalent to the Cadillac luxo barges of the 60s and 70s

First like! Beautifal Cadillac's. We would love to see a video on the 1969-1970 Full Size Ford's. LTD, LTD Brougham, XL and Galaxie 500.

Totally agree with everything that you said. 2.0t will get in a hurry but are definitely not fast.

These late 60s early 70s Cadillacs are the best, in my opinion - traveling in them was like being in a private jet - hours and hours and 100s of miles in quiet, serene comfort for 4 people. You have to live with one to understand how sublime they were.
@martifilipponi102429 күн бұрын
Unless you drove a Lincoln of that era.. Continental Mark III always won the shootouts between these two cars.. and the the mark and the Lincolns were heavier cars. You can feel the weight.. My family had both growing up.

@martifilipponi1024 My friend's parents had Lincolns and they were very nice but my mother was a Cadillac lover, period. I got my driver's license in her '73 Eldorado.

Adam love you guy but you’re comparing a barely Cadillac to a true true Cadillac. No contest in anybody’s book. The XT6 shows how far Cadillac is from Cadillac. But as always great video!

I had a '78 Sedna DeVille in my youth (NOT a show car; turned into a hobby) and the cruise control always fascinated me. Electronic nothing, just a 4 barrel Rochester. The cruise control worked on vaccum. The car would accelerate up a grade and decelerate down to maintian speed; and it stuck to whatever speed you set like glue.

I know we've gotten to a point where a small displacement, forced induction four cylinder can motivate most modern vehicles with all of the verve of a pre-emissions V8, but you've summed up the overarching feeling one gets at 20:47. My Yale forklift makes the same noises when I'm shunting pallets of brick across a jobsite.
