On this video we wrap up our part of the work being performed on the 1969 Dodge Charger. I go over the work we did do on this car and still a lot of the work that will have to be addressed when it arrives at the next shop.

I know what it like working with the car and motorcycle owners. I had a motorcycle shop and an auto repair show. With years of experience, you can tell from the owner what kind of person they are. When the red flags came up before I started the project, I told him I was too busy to do the job. Rick, you were totally professional.

Thanks a lot Brian, I learned a long time ago some will not be happy with the work no matter what you do for them. I can sleep at night knowing he was the one that got a fair deal and lost it. I would rather build for people that I feel deserve it anyway and I am lucky to be able to do that now with this one gone.

Great explanations all around. From setting up your tig and setting up panels to dealing with long distance owner who can't just come over after work to see that there's 30 more hours of work needed on a section that couldn't be seen until pulled apart and on a lift. Not doing quotes is an honest way to work. A quote on a car like this Charger is just a guess and either you're going to have to call and tell them that you have to double the quote or the work has to have short cuts which it looks like you would not do. I tell ya.....if I had one of these cars, I'd put it on a trailer, bring it to you, leave you enough money to get started and then send money every week to cover your work. Getting it done right is the way to do this and YOU know how to do it right. I really respect your work.

Thank you so much for the really kind words, understanding and really the whole propose and what I want the channel to portray. There is too many scripted shows on TV that are entertaining and give a false sense on this industry and it usually doesn't work out that way. There are also honest people in this business and all we hear about is the horror stories from these shops. The hourly rate is what I feel like you said a guess.

I've been a Mopar fan for years, that said Mopars were ahead in engineering compared to other manufacturers but the bodies fell short as far as drainage and rust protection. The dollars spent back in the 60's and early 70's went into body style changes to keep them fresh and all the new government standards that all manufacturers were dealing with. Your work is better then the factory would ever allow(not profitable). You are a gentleman handing off this unfinished car to another shop. Unfortunately the finished product will have some else's signatures but if the other shop is worth there weight they will acknowledge craftsmanship when they see it!😊

I'm honestly blown away at the level of repair these old Chargers are receiving these days. I imagine they are becoming restomods and selling for six figures. Crazy. I bought a '69 Charger R/T for $850 back in 1989 and it had no where near the level of frame rust that this one had. I recall replacing the trunk floor and rear valance panel. Great job on the restoration work. These cars do represent a high point in America when everything was still possible, though things were already starting to decline.

Thank you very much! A lot of hard work went into it. Honestly I have it a little easier then you did in 89 as the market sees the value in these cars now. They make so many more panels and the quality has gotten so much better where this build wasn't possible 25 years ago.

Your video was very informative. Your work was impeccable and the outcome is amazing, considering what you started with. From what you've described, you've managed the divergence of opinions between you and the customer as professionally as one could ask for or expect. Hopefully he/she will find someone who will help get this car finished up and back on the street. I think this video and your previous video might serve to encourage more business, rather than less. People who launch into doing a restoration of this magnitude should remember that some of the reasons they're bringing the car to a given shop is they do not have the knowledge, skills abilities or time to do the job themselves, or else they're bringing the car to their selected shop because given their options, that shop is where they believe they will get the best bang for their buck. That said, unless they are obviously getting ripped off by said shop, they need to put some trust in the hands of the craftsmen doing the work. As you've stated, most craftsmen want to do the best job possible, and at the same time meet the customer's needs. That usually results in an enhanced reputation, repeat business and/or referral business. Left me thinking rather than "sending" my Cuda down, I'll invest the time and money to bring the car down so that we can meet in person and allow for a thorough "going over" of it to determine proper course of action and such. I'm particularly interested in how the red Challenger project wraps up, as you had mentioned that was going to be a "driver quality" build...which is what i think I'm looking for, VS a show car that is actively competing for awards and sees very little actually street driving.
@carthageclassiccars
@carthageclassiccars Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the very kind words and a really good understanding of the whole restoration process in general and the feedback given here. You are 100% correct in everything you stated. I think the most important point you mentioned is the trust on both parties involved. In this industry there has to be a lot of trust dropping what some people consider a prized possession with a connection with a lot of times off with someone who will cut into it. Along the restoration process hopefully I strive to build on that trust. Without that it will be a long road ahead. That is why if I can I always like to meet in person the owners both when the car arrives and when the car is picked up to go over everything and make sure they are satisfied with the work. As you stated its a lot easier to go over every piece we can step by step and figure out the end game as best we can realizing there will be surprises along the way. With the red challenger there is another video coming soon. The owner ran into an issue with a part he was looking for so we put it on hold for the last few weeks until e can get exactly what he wants and needs. From what I heard the part has arrived and should be at my shop within the week. I am excited about getting back going on that one. Thanks again for taking the time on watching and commenting.

If the owner knew more than you about the best and most cost efficient way to repair the car, then he didn’t need you to do it for him-right? Lol 😅 Guess you hurt his feelings in the earlier videos. Restoring a car in this condition is expensive, takes a lot of time, effort and money. I had a Challenger restored like this in the late 80s. I had the shop replace the entire rear clip with the rails and most of the front clip. We acid dipped the body. At that time it was the most extensively restored Mopar muscle car when it was finished in 1990. I used a combo of NOS and clean used sheet metal to rebuild it. It was a lot of work finding all the parts. Kept the car for 33 years. It’s worth about $200k now being a real sunroof model, which is why I put all the effort into restoring it 35 years ago. Most people thought I was nuts. Car was in Mopar Collector Guide magazine twice and was featured in the TV commercials promoting the 2020 Mecum auction that it sold in. Ok so my point is, listen to the guy doing the restoration work, because he is in charge of the success or failure of the job. He knows best. If he doesn’t, don’t hire him in the first place!

Yes we are lucky now and days where sheet metal companies have really upped the standard in quality on the sheet metal parts. It really has affected the final outcome and quality of the builds. Most of the repairs I see is slapped on filler but thinking back there were almost no options besides that to keep them on the road and they weren't bringing the value at the time to justify paying a custom fabricator to make something.

A week ago I had a full size car engine and everything lifted 3/4 of the way up and it was solid so I do trust it. The downside you have to be aware that it will lift the vehicles up unlevel side to side as it cantilevered but I have used it enough now to adjust the lifting points so the side away from the post is higher. I think the max lift height is 72 inches. It will go taller then my garage will allow.

I wish you were wrong, but unfortunately I think you might be100% right on the rest of this car. Its a shame to think the level of work that went into most of what people will never see to maybe turned into a flipper car down the road caked will filler and pretty paint.

I have a question concerning all of the inside the car on the brand new sheet metal, what is the best way to prep the e coat for primer is it just simply scuff and prime? I know it's best to remove it completely on the exterior panels.
@carthageclassiccars
@carthageclassiccars Жыл бұрын
Personally on the inside I usually DA sand it down the best I can with 80 grit as much as I can within reason to bare metal then shoot epoxy primer over it.

You better THINK TWICE if you’re planning to send your Charger to this shop.
@carthageclassiccars
@carthageclassiccars Жыл бұрын
Sir, I have been honest and upfront from the start with your car when it arrived to my shop especially once I saw the parts you sent. Everything went well with your build as it should and I the 2 months I had the car you had nothing negative to say. I gave you weekly updates, invoices, with pictures along with the youtube videos. I continued to perform the work up until the quarter panel install. Before the quarter panel install I sent you multiple emails (also video footage on this channel) also we talked a few times and the same message came from me to you. That message was how this car 100% needs full quarter panels and I can NOT express that enough and if we do these skins the cars quality gaps and fitment will be diminished. I also explained they are not quality and should under no circumstances be installed on this car. I then explained that you will spend more money on the labor alone vs buying a brand new proper set of quarters. I am sorry you are unhappy with the quarter panel install but there is nothing else I could do or say to change the outcome as you made it clear didn't care what I had to say you wanted the car done your way. My only other option was to send the car home with no quarter panels at all and you made it clear that wasn't going to turn out well. You have your car returned to you and I feel you got everything and more for what was paid. At this point I ask that we both can move on before you try and ruin a business I worked hard for a well reputation. I tried my best through all these videos to leave your name and personal information out of this build so please let it go.
