1969 Chevelle Yenko 427 Muscle Car Of The Week Video #49
The 1969 Chevelle SS 396 was a hot car, but the COPO program allowed for a run of 427 cars to really take Super Stock drag racing by storm. However, Don Yenko at Yenko Chevrolet one-upped the COPO cars with 99 special 1969 "SYC" Yenko Super Car Chevelles further modified to his liking. This 427 cubic-inch monster features a 4-speed, and it is one of only 12 built in Garnet Red. From The Brothers Collection.

This car has it all. Super rare . Super collectible. An absolute monster on the street. This was about the best Chevy had to offer in 1969. There is a reason it’s called a Super Car . Thanks for showing us this . Reminding us of how great American Muscle cars truly are

I like the '68-'69 Chevelle (and Malibus) best. The '70 is the most popular and the "71-'72 are updates of the '70 style. The '68-'69 cars look lower and leaner than the more boxed off front and rear of the '70-'72 cars, and I dig the wrap around front grille on them too. Another great video!

I'd take one of these over a 70 LS6 Chevelle SS any day. Love the styling of the 68-69 Chevelle/Malibu the best of all Chevelle's. Plus I like the fact that this is just a bare bones Chevelle and not the more fancy SS model. All I need is that 427, 4 speed, and 4.10 rear. No frills

Totally agree I'd take a 69 copo or yenko over a 70 LS6.

I'd take one over an LS6 only because its a factory built sleeper and much rarer than a '70 SS with the Z15 option. But LS6 is still my favorite of all.

Guys must've been pissed when they bought these in 69 then in 70 the LS6 454 is released and put into regular production Chevelle SS. that stupid 400 ci edict GM had for years was finally lifted for 1970, then muscle cars we're gone two years later. Damn the EPA

Not really because these were much more special IMO plus just as quick as an LS6 tbh.

I believe Buick’s second incarnation of the STAGE-2 option was available in 70 or 71. I am not certain how much more power you got but it probably got you in Yenko territory. Look up Pop Kennedy, Kenne-Bell Buick for some of those archives.

Stage II was an over the counter parts ensemble. You could buy what you wanted; heads were the most graphic power item along with the camshaft. Headers, aluminum intake, Holley carb and the coveted 2x4 intake set up for Holley carbs and a 5.00 gear set. There was a 68 GS that sold a few years back on Mecum that was fully fitted with every Stage II piece. Would like to have seen that car make a pass.

To state the L72 was "basically a Corvette motor" is true only in reference to 1966. While it's true Sting Ray's had 427's under the bonnet '66-'69, the L72 was a '66-only motor. By 1969, big block options were the L36, L68, & L71, the latter also available w/L89 aluminum heads. As well, "the 350-horsepower SS396 car, you know, that was the standard Super Sport model" is itself a misnomer. The 325-horse L35 396 was in fact the base power plant for '69 SS396 Chevelle's. Again, the LS6 was NOT a component of "a standard Chevelle SS", but an option thereon.

Could anyone go into a dealer and order a copo 427, and if so, what did the Yanko have that you wouldn't get, other than the Yanko badging?
@cali2468

There were power modifications such as headers, intake, carb etc offered by Yenko. It wasn't just an appearance package.

@@cali2468 The description says he one upped the copo, I was just curious how he did it. Doing the intake, carb, headers, and exhaust would do a lot without spending too much. He could go one step further and do the cam, lifters, and heads, that would be even better, but then you're getting into a lot more money and more chance of damaging the engine.

It's YSC, not SYC...look at the side of the car and extrapolate. Yenko Super Car. The "Y" is superimposed over the "SC" on the hood and seats; plus fix the left brake light. Thanks for another pretty good video.
