Being a teenager in the 70’s, I remember seeing these cars a lot. The fastest street racer in our town drove one, our H/S quarterback had one, (as though he needed more help scoring chicks), and my friends mom had one with a six-banger. They were seemingly everywhere. Not so much anymore. This was the exact combination I always wanted. What a beauty!
@joeclark70822 жыл бұрын
what a beautiful car. Back in the 90's, my high school girlfriend's dad had a 68 396 Chevelle car in the pasture and he loved to tell me the old street racing stories, and I loved to hear them. I drove a 74 nova and he appreciated that but looked down on the bumper. Those were good times. I still prefer the thin tail lamps of the 68. Both the 74 and the girl were my first. Luckily, i still have the car. Memories!

I remember kids still drag racing on back roads, organized with a party going on the sidelines. Kids just a bit older than me in 1980. The road was called "Hawley road" in Mason county Michigan. I check it out once, (I just got my license and a hand me down, and handed down again car. Older brother first). Just like going to a sporting event, but free. :) I thought the Nova was tough. People sure made them run. I got into dirt bikes instead, (big growth there, like early muscle cars), and picked up a 2007 Mustang with a V-6 in it. I never had a 300-350hp muscle car, so a couple years after obama got elected, I put a roots blower on it, (plus a lot more stuff to get it up to that stuff), modded it more and just had it restored. I like the original old man muscle car better, but it will do. Cervini side pipes, (much more loud than I thought they would be) insure I don't drive it often. :) Looks a bit like like Elinor from the remake.

Unlike most other cars, '69 Chevelle steering boxes were 4 turns lock to lock; Most cars are 3. It makes for the smooth steering they're talking about. The downside is trying to correct/countersteer the car when the rear end breaks loose. Sometimes, you literally couldn't spin the wheel back & forth fast enough to keep you out of the ditch. My cousin bought a brand new 1967 Chevelle SS, with a 396 cubic inch, 375 horse, that you had a hard time taking off at a red light without spinning those little six inch wide, blue line tires. When it rained, you really had a difficult time just MOVING from a stop! I believe that by 1969, that 375 horse motor had so many warranty returns that they began to sell them installed with the 325 horse. This car (although a little 'newer'), brought back some memories.
@M21L352 жыл бұрын
That's TOTAL baloney....the L78 was a rare but available motor thru the 1970 model year, though after '69 it no longer was a '396', even though Chevy retained '396' on Chevelle SS fenders. In '70 thru '72 the former 396 was bored .030" over to produce 402 cubic inches, & subsequently called the "400 Turbo-Jet".
@RonRay2 жыл бұрын
@@M21L35 No baloney! I'm not saying that the 396 was discontinued, only that Chevy produced the lesser horsepower from the 375 as "stock". I don't know if you could get the 375 or not, but the "production model" were no longer 375 horse. I had a good friend who bought the later model (1969), and his was like this one (in the video), because he couldn't get the "375 horse". He took it to all the drag races around our area (I went down the track a couple of times in it.) I remember the Chevrolet people would have their "agents" at all the major drag races (and even some of the smaller ones), and if you brought one of their big boys to the track, the warrant was VOID! My cousin had his back in the shop on a regular basis. I'm 73 years old and LIVED it.

I think back on my childhood - Long Island, NY circa 1978. If a first time teen driver drove down the street with that, you were instantly in the cool crowd. You'd see Cragar SS's on them - deep-dish in the back, with the rear slightly raised up. That throaty sound at start-up brings back many memories. The '69-'72 Chevelle or Camaro was the car of choice and they weren't cheap by the standards of a used car at that time. Maybe they were $1,000, but that was double the price of the typical first car.

Awesome video! The 69 Chevelle SS 396 is one of my favorites. I had 2 of them in the past and got my first one when I was 17 years old back in 1984.

I bought an identical SS when I came home from Nam. Bought it upstate NY for 3450.00 off the floor. Took it straight to Baldwin Chevy on Long Island and had headers, Crane cam,Offenhauser intake and a Holley 780 installed. Then I swapped the shifter for a Hurst. That car was fast,fun and a chicken magnet.

Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Jay Leno, and a steak diner: that'll be $12.95 sir. Incredible.

It's similar to paying about $99.95 today. Still quite a good deal.

You two have great chemistry. Y'all should do a movie together, something with cars obviously, maybe remake Smokey and the Bandit, lol.

I’d watch that!

The DEEP PURPLE song 'Speed King' is about this model 396 manual Chevelle. One of the band members owned.

Brings back memories. I had one back in the 80’s. 325 hp and a 4 speed as well. ( I did not know Gabriel was a car guy…now I do, )

I’ve had several Chevelles over the years. Loved them all! However, my ‘70 is the one I that will never part from me. ❤️

Gabriel said "I left home with 2, and came home with 6". Sounds like the last time I went to Denver with my escort service.

Awesome car. Had one in 1981 while in high school. Mine was Blue, but had with the turbo 400 auto steering column shift. Had the A/C option that didn’t work. Pretty much stock except for US mags and air shocks in the rear. Sold it for $1300 bucks in late 1982 when I went off to college. One of the biggest mistake in my life. Ugh!!😎 Great vid

Hey Jay, my favorite car in 69' was the 396 Chevelle. Then followed very close by the 69' Mustang Mach 1. I wasn't at driving age in 69' but several years later my first car was a 69 Road Runner. Not sure why I never looked at a 69 Chevelle when ready to buy. Here are some cars I did look at....a 57' Plymouth, a 69' Charger, a 66' Tbird, a 67 Buick Riviera with 3 two barrel carbs stock, just to name a few. I was on a tight budget so my selection was limited.

Thanks for another fun, informative episode Jay and congratulations to Gabe. Two interesting things I noticed… 🤔💭 While we see the power brake booster under the hood, it wasn’t listed on the window sticker. Power front disc brakes must’ve been part of the Z35 SS 396 package. Most interesting… & something I haven’t seen for a long time, was the restorer enabled the reversing lights to remain lit whenever the ignition switch is on. Back in the day that indicated to other street racers that you’ve never been defeated in a stoplight drag race and/or you and your machine were ready to give it a go. Folklore from the days of yore… 💪👍.

I’ve won the “surprise package giveaway”? 🤷♂️ “Telegram only to claim your prize”? 🤔 Will the real Jay Leno please stand and rev it up ?
