Today in the shop we have this 1969 Chicago Coin Speedway. This is an electromechanical arcade machine and is pretty ingenious considering there's not one single integrated circuit in the game.
The premise is simple: drive as fast as possible without crashing. The faster you drive, the more points you accumulate. When you crash into another car or into the sides of the track, you don't accumulate points for a second or three. Once you get the hang of it, you can find the "sweet spot" and manipulate the game and avoid crashing for long periods, which I manage to do during the first bit of this video. When you accumulate a set number of points, you get "extended play" which doubles the length of time you can play and the clock goes around twice instead of just once.
The game can be pretty frustrating for beginners until they get into the swing of how it works. The player is constantly having to pulse the accelerator until they find the rhythm.
Anyway, fairly fun/interesting machine, although I'm not sure how much staying power it would have in a home environment.
