I am an AFL guy all the way. Jets, Raiders and Chiefs were my favorite teams. I say “were” because as far as I’m concerned, pro football doesn’t exist anymore except for these memories from the 1960s and 1970s.

I hear ya. The only NFL football I watch these days is out of habit. And I& the game isn’t any good I have no compunction in changing channels or turning the tv off and doing something else.

Shutting down the Jets, Raiders, and Vikings in order while allowing only 2 TDs and 2 FGs in 12 quarters was one of the greatest playoff runs in history. All three teams were scoring machines. It was Stram's masterpiece of outthinking his opponents - Ewbank, Madden, and Grant.

A classic NFL Films creation. Thank you Comrade

The Deciding contest in the 23 game rivalry. No last AFL Championship matchup could have been better. This "Last Showdown" should have been fully preserved on video tape.
@ultrametric9317 Жыл бұрын
Videotape was extremely expensive. It was common to reuse it and write over anything previously recorded.
@romelovesdan Жыл бұрын
@@ultrametric9317 Absolutely, simply put tapes were expensive, even in the early days of home taping. What is is sad is that the AFL perhaps also wanted to foolishly deny their legacy as they were 'moving on' in the merger with the NFL. However, the Networks were not hurting for money. They should have kept a copy as testament to their affiliation with the league and assistance with it attaining legitimacy.

This game was on NBC right after the NFL championship game (in Minnesota where the Vikings beat the Browns 27-7). Curt Gowdy and Kyle Rote called the game. Never forgot it. The Chiefs had said they saw suitcases on the Raiders bench in anticipation of Oakland leaving for New Orleans right after this game. This gave them extra incentive going into this game. Lamonica ultimately jammed his passing hand on KC's Aaron Brown's helmet and from that point on was ineffective.

I wore jersey number 89 for more than 25 years in honor of the great Otis Taylor. Jerry Rice usually gets credit as the greatest pro receiver of all time, but Taylor was bigger, stronger, faster, and may have possessed the best hands in AFL / NFL history. And no "magic gloves" back then that allow even average receivers today to make spectacular catches. Fred Biletnikoff had a not-so-secret weapon in those days before gloves -- "stick-um" all over his hands and forearms. Man, how I miss those days of my youth....

Fantastic video. I love anything from the AFL and NFL of the 60s. I am from Minnesota and whether KC or Oakland, they would have trounced the Vikings. Somehow losing to Oakland sounds better than losing to Hank Stram.

Lombardi shut up Stram in the first Super Bowl, then known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game.

A great time (much better than todays game) in AFL/NFL history.
@ultrametric9317 Жыл бұрын
It's not better it's just different. Today's players are much faster and much stronger. If they played by the lax rules in place then people would get killed. I miss dirt fields and simple uniforms though :)

@@ultrametric9317 It was MUCH more enjoyable to watch the simple NFL back then.

The Raiders caught two bad breaks. That Otis Taylor “catch” at 15:26 at midfield was clearly out of bounds as he was still clearly bobbling the ball and that pass interference on the Nehamiah Wilson at 16:42 was just totally ridiculous. That said, I’m not saying those plays cost the Raiders the game but they hurt. The Chiefs would’ve been punting the ball from their own end zone. No question the Chiefs played a great defensive game though.

Great comments! I was only 14 when this game was played. All those HOF players and a few who probably be in the HOF.

You can clearly see at 15:26 that Otis Taylor's right foot was completely out of bounds on that game-changing catch. Unfortunately, there were no challenge flags, etc during that time and the Raiders essentially couldn't contest the call

I think the NFL should split up the two leagues but today's NFL the AFC would play AFC and NFC would play NFC like in the 1960s the the conference champions would meet in the Superbowl bring back the retro AFLl NFL

The Chiefs caught a break on Otis Taylor's catch on the sidelines on 4th-and-13 from their own 3-yardline ...... he was out of bounds when he secured possession of the ball. Also, the Raiders should have kicked a field goal on 4th down from the Chiefs' 13-yardline with just under 2 minutes to play ...... that would have cut the lead to 7 points (17-10), and they could have tried an on-side kick at that point. They probably still would have lost, but at least they would have had a sliver of a chance.

I think All the 10 teams from the AFL should be forced to Wear The Same patch the Chiefs wear on their uniforms
