I Put Some Water In Charlies Hat. Thats how we remembered how to spell Ipswich at Downing primary School. I have so many fond memories of growing up in Ipswich. The large tinted glass building with the grass on top, radio Orwell near the bus station, seeing the punks and skins sitting on the steps downtown, the shop that had the massive Hornby train set with all the landscape, cars and figures, the smell of leather as you walked through the market. I could go on and on. Ipswich always felt like a safe place to live in the 70's and 80's. I moved to the States in 87. I still have Terry Butchers autograph from when he visited the fair at Debenham High School. I'll always be a Tractor Boy at heart.

Ah. That’s how I learnt to spell Ipswich too. I ended up working in that black glass building about twenty eight years ago. Now moved away to but Ipswich in the 70’s was quite exciting and futuristic with its architecture. Perhaps not so much now.

@@mrlotusmic Some of the buildings were quite adventurous, perhaps too adventurous for Ipswich in the 70s. The Greyfriars development was a complete disaster.

when i was old enough to go to middle school, i picked an ipswich bag because it had a horse on it. star wars had just come out and my father had bought me a new timex c3p0 r2d2 watch, lovely. i put it in my bag for gym and when i came back i found the rough boy johnny had jumped up and down on my bag because he was a liverpool fan. time-ex. then we moved to arizona where everybody jumps on everybody's bag for any reason. i still remember the matter of fact exchange, "you've jumped up and down on my bag" "well it had ipswich on it so i had to" which was entirely reasonable. he was rough but not mean, and he and his mate did spend all day going "liverpool, liverpool". thank you for the effort Papa.

Although I did not travel on this particular train, I did travel on two in 1967, to Manchester City in the Cup and QPR in the league. On the Manchester trip I chatted with the legend John Cobbold.

Now they have got back on track again with good owners, a good management team and a good team on the pitch and promotion back to the Championship, they want to bring back the Blue Arrow again. It would be good for them to have their own train(s) to ferry the supporters to the away matches like they did back then. Although these days I presume coach travel has overtaken rail travel, and also the railway is not the same happy place as it once was back then? I presume there were a lot more football charters (and football excursions) back in those happy days than there are in the present day? And I recall for the home matches, there was a lot of charters for their visiting teams to bring their supporters to Ipswich and take them home again. I Put Some Water In Charlie's Hat. Yes, that's how I learned to spell and say Ipswich as well. I don't think poor old Charlie would have been very happy though when he put his hat on and got a wet head?! 😂 Never did find out the outcome to that... 😀

Six hours travel, must have been a slow old journey. Did they walk to the ground or was a bus service laid on? That skinhead was really at the next stage, he was a suede head. Most football specials were made up of old stock, old carriages ...yes, you'd get the louts so it was too risky if it all got vandalised.
