If I may add a side note to this game, the referee was a 34-year-old Jerry Markbreit, who stayed in the Big Ten for six more years before joining the NFL in 1976. He still holds the record for most Super Bowls by a referee with four and retired after the 1998 season.

Michigan had been a dominant football program for half a century but had fallen on hard times through the late 50's and 1960's. We were in danger of becoming Minnesota - a once proud program that would never recover. This win over OSU confirmed that Michigan was back as a true power in college football. This win was the start of the 10 year war with Woody. It reignited the rivalry with OSU. Sports pundits called it the upset of the century. All the = Greatest win in Michigan's history.

I don't follow sports these days but I do know that in the past Michigan usually had an unusually large number of players from Ohio.

That Michigan team was underrated. They had about ten guys who later played in the pros, either NFL, AFL or CFL. Moorhead was a good, effective QB.

So where were the "warm weather" schools back then? You know, the USC, Miami, Florida, all the SEC teams? Why was it that the football weather/cold weather element schools were so dominant back then but not now?

I'm guessing that the cold weather incentivized running the football, also it could be that college was more valuable then than it is nowadays, so education isnt really a factor for the best recruits unlike back in the 60s. Also, probably the biggest reason, was because of the North's willingness to recognize that the black players are superior athletically. Athleticism matters in athletics.

Also, Bo was now on equal footing in the recruiting wars, Bo beat the ""best team ever assembled'' the 1969 OSU team was easily the best the college team of the 1960's with OSU's 1968 not quite as good. I will say this, if Jan White doesn't get injured after scoring OSU's second TD, this game is interesting, Kern kept hitting Jan over the middle for huge gains after looking downfield for Jankowski and Zelina. The int's came after Jan left the game and Kern kept forcing passes downfield.

Typeviic, USC was really good in those years, but a lot of the southern schools were still in the process of integration, while the northern schools had really started aggressively recruiting black players. This was a period when even schools like Alabama were having some issues.

Kicking game was OSU's Achilles heel? Oh, they missed an extra point, but they still lost by 12. If you're looking for a reason for Ohio State's losing, try SEVEN TURNOVERS (to ZERO for Michigan)!

With Michigan being a 17-point underdog. It's one or the best ever wins in school history. Considering woody saying that's his best team man for man hes ever had . It set in motion Michigan being back on a national level. They fell on hard times in the 50 and 60s. It's a significance of the win that made it. It set off the 10 yr cold War between woidy and bo. No one really thought Michigan was going to win. Woody and the buckeyes were breaking the doors off of everyone trying 2 go for back 2 back chips. And in the previous year hung 50 on Michigan. Not to mention they where trying to set the ncaa record for consecutive wins by a team.
