1969 VW Bug Project - Episode 50 - Distributor Woes and Striping

As usual, a few words about my videos: these episodes document my efforts to restore an old VW Bug and are not intended as how-to's. I am a professor of English by trade, and I have no formal mechanic training (which is often quite obvious). I'm also into making semi-interesting/entertaining videos showing how I've gone about my restoration work. You needed to have a matching coil for the Pertronix. Electronic distributors or distributor conversion kits need a coil that works with them.

Man that is one clean looking engine! Wish you would have shown the actual installation of the distributor. Does the engine have to be at top dead center?

It doesn’t have to be but it helps. You just need to use a test light to get the rotor positioned right when the first cylinder is firing. Then you pull the dizzy, put in a new one, and rotate it until the first cylinder lights (without turning the engine, only the dizzy). That’ll get the new one in the same spot as the old one. You’ll have it close enough to start, and then adjust the timing from there.
