All these PROFESSIONAL BARN FIND HUNTERS, get these cars by low balling people, fixing it cheaply, then dumping it on these big auctions...Just effectively killing it for the average shadetree restorer

The reason it sold low is because it was 2009 we were coming out of a semi great depresssion

I had my hands on one just like this at Jerry's Govans Chevrolet in October 1970. It did not sell until mid 71. The sticker price was $7,777.77. They said they would let it go for $3800! Since then, it was restored.

This car was one of them. It was returned then resent in late 69 to seattle, The car was eventually raced by my father in law. Big story behind it.

They were fast ran in the 11 second range from the factory but no way that car was under 500 HP that was for insurance reasons only. The car had to be closer to 600 than 500. I ran one with only two mods and not even sure if one was a mod but it was a quick disconnect of mufflers from headers for racing only took a minute or so the owner did it so not sure how it worked or if it was a modification. The other I know was a Mod it was racing slicks which got us in the 10 second range. I hear 69 were made but not sure how many were sold as the COPO option alone was $4000 or about same as a Camaro with a regular 427. You could buy a Vette for $5500 back then. I think some of the engines were parted out to racers which is why I am not sure 69 actually sold. Dodge also made a lightweight Dart in 62 I think 4 of them with a huge big block only for racing but came from factory. They are so rare not sure if any still exist as they all raced.

Purely an investment now, these cars go through owner after owner without so much as a mile or two added to the odometer....no way you could drive it anywhere, can't risk it, ....I love these cars, but for my money, I'd have to have a clone to flog the snot out of it!

_Throwback to '09 for sure.(Side note: this ZL Camaro was so under the money because the country was facing a recession, and the bottom fell out of the collector car market). When you see Ron Pratt sitting next to Rick Hendrick, you know big money was in the room that day there at _*_Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale._*

Just difference in opinions man, I like driving my cars no matter what they are. Although I've never owned anything as rare as this I just feel cars are meant to be driven. But to each his own. But if someone ever hits mine, I'll come buy yours cause I know it would be safe and sound in your garage. lol

Jay M. son that nasty pissed off 427 would murder Any 440 or 426Hemi stock vs stock right off the lot no bull shit done to neither car that COPO would run down your dodge no questions asked the race would be done before it started. But I do like my old dodge muscle cars to but the 427COPO is still my favorite.
@laurelthoma72879 жыл бұрын
Whether it's your favorite or not is irrelevant. This isn't the "fastest" car of the late 60's-Early 70's just because it's your favorite.
@mikeh.7532 жыл бұрын
The can-am teams took this motor out to a little over 500 cubes and made over 800 naturally aspirated horse power. That aluminum 427 was a beast even when comparing it to a LS6 454. Light weight and one hell of a revving big block. Never been anything like it made by Ford or Dodge. When new in a Corvette if the cam was at the correct degree and a tank of good fuel that car was really hard to beat by ANY car on the Blvd. I grew up watching these cars on the streets of southern California (Westminster, in Orange county) and I saw lots of hemi Cuda's get gapped from a street light. The only version of the Cuda that I personally stay up with a ZL1 Vette was a 440 with the three carburetors and a 4speed. These were high 10 low 11 second cars with the right tires and back in the early 70's there weren't much of any good tires yet. I saw a 1970 Chevelle 454 LS6 turbo 400 automatic literally spinn both rear tires all the way through a 1/4 mile. But it had polyglass nylon belted tires and we all know how much traction the old polyglass nylon tires got, NONE not even when properly warmed up. Hell I think they got less traction if you got them too hot.

With just a bit of tweaking, the car pushed out 500 HP. At that level, a spoiler wasn't necessarily useless.

They made 550 from the factory.
@boostjunkie23207 жыл бұрын
Actually it would put down over 550rwhp from the factory....Put slicks on it from today and it runs 10s in the 1/4 mile, easy.

The ZL1 was the second most powerful 427. Third would have been the L88 427, and the SOHC 427 at number one.

X11 exterior trim on a 9560 car? The 9561 had some X11s and even some early cars had the X66 trim with blacked out rear panel. Remember Reggie had a wearhouse fire and lost several cars...

The 50 cars that Fred Gibb ordered, only 1 was ordered with spoilers. That would be car #3 which is Daytona Yellow. The 2 Fathom Green cars not ordered by Gibb came with 4 speeds and spoilers, this car is an automatic. Why no interior shot? Looks like Reggie bid 285K on his own car, the barker was looking right at him. Dog and pony show for the guy in the red shirt.
@zxtenn12 жыл бұрын
I read that they couldn't even sell them so some were returned to GM by Gibbs Chevy, 7200.00 was too much then, amazing. I cannot believe that such a deep breathing car didn't come with headers, how can you equip such a car without?

When I was in High School my friend had a 69 Z-28 which had a 302 small block that put out about 400 horses. He beat the shit out of that car and then his dad bought him a ZL-1. He turned that into a car only for the strip. His brother had an LT-1 Vega while dad drove an Isso Griffo; an Italian sports car with a 327/350 Chevy engine. It had a 200 mph speedo but it would only do 150. It sold for $15500 which was a small fortune back then.

Ok that makes total sense. Why would you not want it to stay somewhere safe and know that nothing bad could happen to it? But you would rather drive it around alot and take a risk on some dipshit that will come along and hit your expensive camaro... But you could keep it in a nice garage and drive it every now and again to put some miles on it...
@mrChevyJones6311 жыл бұрын
And what makes it even worse is these guys are gonna pay all this money and put the car in a heated garage somewhere and never drive em. Makes me sick to my stomach.

Don't forget all the rust free bodies are all gone, i had 3 1st generation Camaros, 2 67 RS, one was a Yenko clone, 427/425 with 456 and a 4 speed, i bought the body that previously had a built BB, it had 456 gears, traction bars, etc. I found the engine-- i paid about 400.00 for the body WITH headers-- Not too many rust free, i lived in MA then and in 3-4 years the Camaro was a rust bucket. If you look u can find nice cars MUCH cheaper-- I also had a 69 Z RUST FREE , i should have kept all 3
