(197) How to recover your lost Master Lock Word combination (revisited)

Here I show how to decode a Master Lock Word combination padlock (model 643DASTWD or 643DWD) - handy if you've lost or forgotten your combination.
Note that the basic method is: while tensioning the lock (by constantly pulling up on the shackle as if you're trying to open it), find the loosest number for all the numbers on a wheel, and do it for each wheel.
It's even better if when in the loosest number, it has lots of "play" around the number, but you can't actually keep turning to the next numbers which tensioning (because it's stuck in a valley). The number that is most like this (loosest with large "play" but also very "stuck" in the valley) is likely to be the true gate (and hence the correct number of the combination) for that whee.

Yea the first part is difficult. As soon as you get the toughest-to-turn wheel (while tensioning by constant pulling) in a gate, the other wheels will give more feedback, and if it's in the *correct* gate (correct number) then the other wheels should give even more feedback (meaning it should tighten up one of the other wheels that wasn't so tight before, and the gates will stand out more, and the true gate will stand out more). So it's difficult to find the correct number for the toughest-to-turn wheel (under tension) but as soon as you do it'll get easier. The more wheels you have in the correct gates, the more feedback you'll get (and therefore easier to decode). If you start to get sore fingers, I'd recommend wearing gloves (eg rubber gloves) as otherwise you'll get blisters.
