They might have different shaped shackles or more or less dials, but if you know all these techniques and have lost your code, you have a very good chance of finding one that works for you. It's an incredibly addictive feeling/hobby. When I got back into the hobby a couple of weeks ago, me and the missus were on a 5 hours drive to see family, so I bought a couple locks to tinker with on the way using my new pick set. I ended up asking her to find a Target or Walmart an hour in because I wanted new locks due to having popped the ones I had quite easily many times already. Enjoy!

On the Abus 165/40mI also noticed that when the wheels are not in a true gate, if you hold shackle tension and rotate up a half turn and release, these is no spring and the dial stays in place - conversely, the true gate causes the dial to spring back to the previous position. A little tricky to explain so I might record an episode at some point to demonstrate the idea.

Interesting video. I don't run into many combination locks here, last one was a really high end briefcase with a terrible lock on it. I was able to decode it just by sight. Was happy and sad at the same time. Found it in an illegally dumped pile of garbage on one of my clients properties. Happy because the case had identifying documents as to who did it. Sad because it was far too easy to open. Lol Hope everyone is staying safe. Take care.

What a great locksport video! Placing all of the various techniques into a single video is not only useful from an organizational sense, it also provides the context needed to gain a more general understanding of the combination padlock design and resulting decoding strategy. Each of the specific techniques serves as another example of the general approach to decoding combination padlocks. The pedagogy is excellent. The student is shown different techniques for different locks and leaves with a valuable understanding of the entire class of combination padlocks and will thus be well prepared to decode other locks of this class. This is master level locksport, far above the typical "How to bypass a 175 combination padlock" videos.

I have another technique to distinguish true and false gates and I find it quicker and easier. Use a feeler guage down the side of the wheel you decode and pull shackle really hard. In a true gate no matter how hard you try to open it, the feeler guage won't be pinched and will remain sliding loose in the gap.

On the masterlock that opens to have a set of keys inside and fits on a doorknob, that's an older real estate type lock and notoriously easy to open. I saw anothr viideo and all you need is a pair of sissors, an empty soda can and about ten minutes time. Probably a store brand or cheaper brand of soda will work better as the metal is thinner. You simply make a shim, cut it with scissors until it's narrow enough, if you want to get fancy, bend the end over to make a nice little handle and put it to the left of the wheel. Push a bit of resistance going down. You simply have to push it and let it sit. When you turn the wheel and find the flat spot, it will drop. You can confirm by moving the wheel to another number and it goes up. On this masterlock, you generally have the right combination but not the right set of numbers. Three is usually the amount of clicks you need to move to get it to open. I recommend after finding these sweet spots to move each dial one number each at a time. So, 0000, move to 1111. It should open after doing this three times. If you get it backwards, maybe seven. I am not a lock picker, a thief or have much knowledge on this other than a contractor installed this on my door to let the workers in. Mistake one is they set the code to the four number address. Mistake number two, most of their very talented crew from hanging around Home Depot knows this. It's not like hanging the set of keys on a nail outside the door. To a thieft it's hanging a sign of here's the keys and you can get to them within two to four minutes. Absolutely crazy that this contractor uses this cheap lock. Guess who has to piick up the pieces if you get robbed?
@lapislajesse3655 ай бұрын
had some trouble figuring out this TSA lock actually. It's a 3 digit combo dial lock but the shackle is a cable and there's a button on the side you push to release the cable/shackle. So pulling on the shackle didn't help, and you have to push the button insanely hard and that doesn't even work doesn't really do anything to the dials. However I did find that under the right angle of light you can see the inner wheels and as you turn them you will see little circle shaped divots in the metal, put all the dials on those number and then turn the wheels 2 digits up. That's the combo. It took me a few hours to figure that out because my eyes are crap, but I eventually did it. First combo lock I've ever decoded. Picked a lot of locks, but never could decode one.

Then i changed so the thrid one wiggled, but then the fourth one didnt wiggle, but when i changed the number so that started wiggling again it opened lol.

In grade school, I drove my bike to school maybe five times and used one of the then ('70s) ubiquitous chain and barrel combination locks. After seeing this video and now that I think about it, combination locks and disc detainer locks work mostly on the same principle, the difference is that the first let you operate from the outside while the other let you work from the inside to open it. I had a Cocraft 300C with four wheels that was impossible to feel the difference from false gate and true gate. My only way was to find all the false gates in each position and then brute force from first possible combination to all combinations. In my case the false gates included true was odd numbers on wheel 1, even on 2 and 3 and odd on forth wheel. This gave me possible numbers 13579, 24680, 24680 and 13579 on last wheel. Then I started with first digit on each wheel 1221, next 1223, 1225, 1227, 1229 and then 1241 and so on. The number of combinations was by this method was reduced from 10000 to only 625 combinations. I was lucky and lock opened at 3001. 😀
