Could Arnold's chest have been bigger than Phil Heath's gut?
@matthewnikitas29045 жыл бұрын
That’s not possible for anyone let alone Arnold
@DM-yi1ur5 жыл бұрын
@Michael Cass it's not that much of a topic when it comes to Ronnie's gut because He has a very wide body, big arms, big chest and legs unlike Phil his gut outsized his entire physique.
@mikes38275 жыл бұрын
@Michael Cass IMO (and the opinion of MANY other bodybuilding enthusiasts), today's "mass monster" bodybuilders look like freaks vs. the more classical bodybuilders (e.g. Arnold, Sergio, Zane, etc.). Arnold was obviously big, but he didn't look like a cartoon character like a Ronnie Coleman (and yes, "the gut" is right on the money). I'd say the last of the classical guys was Lee Haney, then things started getting ridiculous after Haney's reign was over.

Arnold looked amazing most of his wins. His legs looked subpar compared to today's standards but in the context of his era and height, are ok, and still had amazing calves. His upper body outclassed most of his rivals, except in 1980. Also he had the charisma no other bodybuilder has ever had since then. His legacy has made bodybuilding more known to the public than any other of his successors. He is the man.

David Moreno You mean his thighs. His calves got so good they were on par with his biceps and pecs. His thighs were just big enough in 1974 but a little thin in 1975 and pretty non existent in 1980. He’s thighs in 1975 were shredded with deep cuts. No one had huge thighs back then although they tried. Frank Zane on he other hand thought his thighs were getting too big so he backed off doing squats. He wanted a perfectly balanced body not one with a single freaky body part.

Great Topic Nick! Arnold & Sergio actually trained together at times in those years. When Arnold came here to Chicago he stayed over at Sergio's home for a while and trained at the Duncan YMCA and said how gracious Sergio and his wife were. Sergio would also go out to California on occasion to train. Arnold learned how to win the judges and audience over despite having smaller inferior legs than Sergio. Arnold learned how to pose better and use "angles" better than Sergio did in comparison shots. He "out thought" Sergio and pranked him with the "I'm tired, let's leave" stage incident in which Sergio walked off and ran back to the stage realizing what Arnold had pulled. These two actually started the "posedown" head-to-head that was not really done that way before in earlier competitions. Yes, Arnold being on magazine covers sold more magazines. And I do think there was some judging switch-ups, especially in 1972. But Arnold showed why he became #1, yet he always acknowledged during all of his competitive years that Sergio was his greatest threat for Arnold to lose the title. Picture a top-notch in shape Sergio in the 1980 Mr. Olympia - very possible Sergio could have done that as he was beating lots of other top guys and had previously always placed higher than post-Arnold Mr. O's Franco Columbu and Frank Zane. If only we could turn back time!

I was at that show in New York. Earlier that day Sergio was walking around NYC in a PINK silk shirt and was followed by a large crowd of people everywhere he went. The policemen gawked and New Yorkers didn't know what to think. Sergio's arms were incredibly big for the day. At the show, Sergio appeared just slightly subdued and Arnold owned the stage. Arnold's posing was superior and his charisma was unbelievable. After he won, he tried to 'escape" out the back, but found a wild crowd there trying to feel his arms and cheering him on. He didn't know what to think and has said that was the wildest crowd he ever saw in his bodybuilding career. BTW, the crowd would NOT let Arnold or Sergio leave and kept screaming for more...that is why they were both so exhausted prior to the famous "agreement" they both made to leave. Quite a show and great memories. Thanks, Nick.

I don't think the 1970 Olympia was really that close. Arnold had great flow, his separation was far superior to Sergios. Sergio was probably 6 weeks out by todays standards, where Arnold was not shredded, was still much leaner by any standard. At first glance Sergio was impressive, but if you break them down bodypart by bodypart , its no contest really..

Arnold enjoyed mocking people he competed with on stage.l guess Joe whispered in his ear after bringing him over " don't worry about a thing, you are always going to win, l am not going to lose on my investment." I believe Serg was better that year to win in 1970 and Franco deserved to win in 1975 but 71-74 was won fair and square. In 1980 was a tie but the physique and posing was better by Arnold to win fair and square in 1980, but 1970 and 1975 are definitely debatable years - Sergio was better in 1970 and Franco was better in 1975 in the Pumping Iron video.
