I learned how to drive on a '70 New Yorker. Feather touch steering, an extremely soft and comfy ride and a 440 that could make this car pass everything but a gas station. I loved that car. My mothers car from 1982-1992. Rust finally did it in, but the funny part was that my Dad sold the engine out of it for slightly less than what they paid for the car in '82, so it gave us 10 years of service for basically what amounted to $50. Seeing some of the options is kind of mindblowing, since the car we rode around in and later drove had almost no options, except for power windows. In its later years, it had a quirk where it wouldn't start unless I bounced up and down on the hood on the drivers side and slammed the drivers side door. Then it would catch. I recall my father took the choke out of it because it would burn too much gas, so it needed to be babied until the cold light on the dash went out. We had a lot of good and not so good memories in that car.

Awesome story! I know how you feel. My high school sweetheart bought in 1975 a 1970 green Newport I loved that car! I remember to this day, how it drove, and how it felt riding in it & how it sounded -very spacious with a budget luxury. Many great memories. I wonder where it is now…

1969 to 1971 Chryslers were among the beautiful cars of the last century. I always liked that theme song they used for 1969 and 1970...You're Next Car is Chrysler. Very elegant, exciting, big American cars. I miss them.

I remember watching Mannix and MISSION: Impossible and there were a lot of Chrysler cars on many episodes. Jim Phelps would drive that car to the rendezvous point to get his Manila envelope with photos and a tape player.

I've always liked the big old Chryslers . They had a funky approach to styling and engineering. You could get them for nothing after the gas crunch of the early 1970's . As my dad said they could pass everything on the road but a gas station . I think I'll start looking around for one today.

My grandfather had a 70 Newport Custom 383 2v. He got it used but said it was his favorite car going back to the 30s. He had a Buick. Nope. He had a newer Olds.. Nope. That 75 350 4v engine had no power, and it handled like a wet sponge in his words. He got an 82 New Yorker 5th Ave ( M body ) in 89, and it was his last newer car. He was never so satisfied. I got this car in 99, and it served me until 01. Even then the 318 was not done yet. I still have that mill in my garage to this day, just waiting for a car to serve in.

I agree. I always thought Chrysler’s, came standard with automatics. Manuals were more suited for the cheaper Plymouth or Dodge lines.

The New Yorker was our car in '70 until '77. I never really liked it compared to an Impala's ride or a Malibu. I guess it was the leaf spring at the rear axel. I drove it a few times and can remember the feel of it being rather lacking. It was a nice car, but just not as comfortable or luxurious a ride as GM. It reminded me more of a Ford. The engine caught fire once I think, not sure why, but survived.

I prefer the previous generation Chryslers. Interesting that Chrysler still offered wind vents (power operated at extra cost) years after GM and Ford dropped the popular yet costly feature.

They were film strips not moving film and the sound came from a record, the beeps told the operator when to advance to the next frame.

Back when pterodactyls flew above the earth, these kodachrome "slides" (if you are from a younger generation, look them up on wiki) were the presentation way before powerpoint. They were accompanied by a, yes, 12 inch vinyl record for sound. The beeps let you know when to move on to the next slide. Pretty hard to imagine how much we have progressed in so short of a time, but you have been born after that so you do not know.

Unfortunately the fuselage 69-73 Chrysler sold poorly. The sales numbers were dismal. Quality was an issue and they just seemed cheap. The doors sounded hollow and the interiors , including the door cards and dash seemed cheap. My father bought a 71 Newport. The suregrip went up during the first year and it overheated in 72 while on vacation heading to Florida. Was never impressed by the ride quality either. Infact the Chrysler with the highest sales numbers became the Royal which was the cheapest Chrysler. It out sold even the Newport. My father was something that didn't happen too often. He was a new Chrysler buyer in 71 and didn't go back. The previous 65-68 Chryslers were actually better automobiles. The last thing our 71 Chrysler did was have the 727 torqueflite give up the ghost in 79 . It only had 60 k miles by then and it lived a charmed life not being abused . Neither of my parents abused it . My father offered to repair the transmission and give it to me as my first car. I declined the offer. At least the standard 383 / 2 barrel was trouble free not needing much in the way of service.

I would have to add 72 and 73 in there as far as being beautiful. I think the 72 Newport's New Yorker's and Imperials were the nicest.The 72 Newport's had the shark tooth grill it was mean looking and I just bought a 73 newport owned a 73 Newport and 73 Imperial and the Imperial was the nicest riding car 727 trans is the best trans for its time.The 73 Imperial you could not even feel it shift it was incredible I have owned 69 Caddy and 71 Mark III as far as ride the Imperial was head and shoulders above the rest. I have owned to Ford products and have had problems with both I had 390 Cougar and 460 Lincoln and both just did not run well.I have owned a lot of old Chrysler products even when I was a kid and never had to invest money to fix them always just proper care. I owned a 69 Newport just a few years ago and that car did not give me any problems and I drove the car at least 6,000 miles a year and even my 69 caddy never gave me any problems it was a great car

I had a '72 New Yorker for years, starting in 1977 when I was 17 and a senior in high school..it was the greatest car I ever owned when it came to looks, ride and comfort! It was a Sherman tank in the snow, would plow through any depth, however, it broken down every other week, and the Auto-Temp II had a vacuum leak that was a pain in the ass and very costly to fix the entire time I owned it. All-in-all though, given the chance, I'd still own it today, if I could!

My favorite car I ever owned was a 1973 Newport I bought in my late teens 3rd hand. I got it for cheap. You couldn't get a better car for fooling around in the backseat with horny boyfriends. The bad part was the car bounced a lot more than most other cars because of the soft suspension....

Over a hundred thousand were sold in '70, thousands are still registered right around the World; clearly plenty of folks don't share your view. You may prefer a 2015 Korean or Chinese car; built to last 3 years, artistically and uniquely styled with no hint of genericism, yet typically weigh only one and a quarter tons....that's at least 1.25 tons less junk per vehicle!

Miram Hotrodder I can't care whether anyone shares my view. My newest car is a 1998. I have no interest in a new car, and especially not anything Korean or Chinese!. In fact, I have a 1967 Mopar that been has been in the family since the early 1970s. I also have a 1988 Ford product with a 5.0 L. MOPAR produced so many beautiful and unique designs throughout the 1960s. But these 1970 models are just big plain jane cars with no souls.

Outside California, in about a year or two, it was very natural that all the plastics of American cars in the '70s were cracked, buttons fell off, and they were all rusty and pulverized.
