Back in 1995 I almost bought a '70 Hemi Challenger that was almost identical to the car in this video. It was a 4 speed, blue on blue but had a regular R/T hood. It was in really nice shape and they wanted $10k for it. I bought a 70 Corvette with a 454, 4 speed and 3.70 gears instead. It was $11k. Ya, that gearing really held the Challenger back, and a 4,000 lb weight. Those Nova 396 were the weapon of choice for the street racing crowd when I was in high school. @@howabouthetruth2157 Yeah, but they tweaked it. The hemi put out closer to 500HP tuned. None the less those 396s were fast. There are low 12 second 340 Dusters in this "stock" (tuned) class. I thought the Duster got out of the hole quick, but considering the much lower trap speed, the Nova launches well. Look at the weight transfer on the Nova. I don't know how much they can play with the suspension in this class, but the Nova owner seemed to have his dialed in.

I think the Nova owner was sandbagging it, I think it’s got a lot more in it for sure. The Hemis were always ooohed and awed over back in the day ( I owned a ‘69 Charger with one) but they did have competition out there. The 396 375 h.p. engine was a beast. I think the engine that was in the Vette and rated 425 h.p. was actually the same engine. The real Chevy guys would know for sure.

You're correct. Somebody (Hot Rod or Car Craft maybe?) built one using stock spec parts and it dynoed at 425 with cast iron manifolds on it. Headers and up 2 sizes on the main jets and it was between 450 and 460. Really nasty engine.
@danielslocum7169

any serious hemi owner who raced on the street would do the following: install 4.10 or 4.30 gears.headers,and higher lift camshaft. then he had at least 500 h.p. and would shift the elephant at 6500 rpm. thats how you make those giant ports and valves work as intended. then with good tires and suspension you could totally dominate the street. it was done that way on woodward ave in detroit and elsewhere for years. case closed.

Something about those solid lifters that really allows you to squeeze the most out of an engine. I owned a '67 fastback Mustang that I put a 351C in and went a solid lifter cam and could not have been happier w/ a decision. That engine could/would wind out to 7500RPMs like nobody's business - I had to add a high pressure/high volume oil pump to keep it from spinning the mains - I had to replace the main bearings after a few high RPM runs w/ a standard pressure pump. Had to have my crank turned it was so badly worn. Experience is a great teacher.

@@steelpenguin1 Wrong. Gears don't make that much difference. Plus, the Nova was severely sandbagging, if you'll notice the MPH. Wouldn't have mattered. The Nova was sandbagging at the end and is clearly much faster if he stays in it all the way through. There's not a big a jump from 3.54 to 4.10's as some folks think. It might have made a tenth, tenth and a half difference in the time. That's about it.
