My parents bought me a new 1970 Torino GT off the dealerships showroom floor while I was still in high school. I was very blessed. The Torino had a 351 Cleveland, 4 speed top loader transmission, Hurst shifter T- handle and posi- rear end. What was cool is it also came with a bench seat. My girlfriend loved the bench seat. I kept the car the rest of high school and college. I loved that car and wish I still had it.

Car magazines such as Hot Nod, Car Crap, and Popular Snot Rod have hated Fords the last 50yrs. Mopars are a close 2nd. You've shown more Torino Cobra's in 5 1/2minutes than all 3 of the aforementioned rags combined. Thank you!

I had one back in the 70's. Got it when I was stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky. I bought it from a Tennessee State Trooper who had ordered it with the specs for a Police Interceptor Ford Cruiser. It was geared high, had a bench seat and drum brakes all around. It would pass everything except a gas station and wouldn't stop for shit.

Believe it or not, I had this same exact car in high school and I new it was special then but not enough to sell it for a 1977 Firebird formula 400 4 speed. I would give anything to have kept that car which had the drag pack and all. All I have today is about 5 photos of my 70 Torino cobra which killed every car I raced back in the day!!! The Ford Torino looked sharp with the sleek design and hideaway headlights. I'm sure it was a lot of fun with the base 302 but it had to be a blast with the 429 Super Cobra Jet upgrade. It's rare to see a Torino cross the block at the major auto auctions. That's a shame because it was a pretty darn cool muscle car.
@badass6.0powerstroke103 жыл бұрын
The plain jane 302 was too damn Small for this car, Should've came with at least a 4 Barrel Cleveland as Standard Engine, or at least 2 Barrel 351 Cleveland. But the 429 SCJ was the ideal Engine for the Torino Cobra for 1970, and 1971 i believe too, but i think 71 Torino Cobra,s could come with a 351, but I'm not 💯% on that.

I look at them often and can't believe the price they are getting these days (why I can't own one). I do have several 1/18 models of them. As close as I can get to owning one now! I sold mine because in 1975, I got orders for Germany and my older brother told me that the Torino would be too big over there. To this day I could shoot him! LOL The last 6 months we were over there I bought a full sized 1973 Plymouth stationwagon and drove it all over Europe. The Torino would have done just fine!

FoMoCo dealer In Huntington WV had two 1970 1/2 Falcon with the 429 SCJ Drag Pak Option. 70 1/2 Falcon made only 1/2 year, built on same platform as Torino. Main difference was Falcon a sedan with window frame and B pillar instead of hardtop like Torino. Falcon had gray plastic grille and plain tailight bezels, no trim on outside. Interior had bench seat and rubber mat instead of carpet. These had beauty bands (trim rings) and dog bowl center caps. One baby blue, one orange. Sticker was about $3,500. I would have been happy with a 302 a/t for about $2400 Take that baby blue 429 SCJ, black out grille, tailight panel, & window frames be a tough looking ride. More subtle than the grabber orange. Definitely made for the drag racers, lighter sedan body and more rigid than hardtops.

After 1971 Ford shipped the design down under, where they mirrored sheet metal in the dashboard area to right hand drive. They ditched the Torino body panels and replaced them with their own design and it became the Ford Falcon XB, XC and XD. No big blocks were offered but the 351 Cleveland 2V and 4V were offered with a FMX auto and the Top Loader 4-speed manual transmission. Four wheel disc brakes were an option as well. This platform lasted until the mid 1980's. So, yeah it was under rated.

I finally got it to together after I was out of the army in 1988.... after purchasing the remains of the original blown up 429 CJ for more than I paid for the car! Used a 1973 460 short block with 72 PI heads, then the original CJ cam, intake, Rochester carb, exhaust manifolds and aluminum valve covers. Cool car with out PS but did have a ribbon tach, 4 speed, and a rainbow 🌈 bench seat interior. I was lucky to find the last of NOS rainbow 🌈 fabric even. Oh, ok, a small block V8 beats a big block V8?!
@jimharvard3 жыл бұрын
@@billyfoster3223 well, it depends upon what small block is up against what big block - but "generally" speaking, a small block will beat a big block on the street because it will wind up faster and will hook up the tires better. a big block will only wind to around 5500 safely and the large amount of low end torque will cause wheel spin off the line. so a 340 mopar would almost always beat a 396 chevy or a 390, 428 Ford or a 389 Pontiact. however, the 302 chevy Z/28 would usually get beat by a lot of cars as would the 302 and 351 Ford. the fastest "small blocks" on the street were the 340 mopars and 327/365 hp chevys and the 350/330 LT-1 chevys. the fastest "big blocks" from the factory were the 440/426 hemi mopar; the 375 hp chevy 396; the 435 chevy 427; and the 455 Stage IV Pontiac. the big block Buicks and Oldsmobile's were fast if "race prepared" but no so much stock on the street.

Yeah right, seriously doubt that huge Charger with the 383 would take down a 429 scj in the 1/4 Mile. It was probably a 351 powered Torino, not the Almighty Super Cobra Jet. Mopar Don't Go Far !!!

429 was not a great Street engine. The 428 Cobra jet was. The Boss 429 shotgun Hemi Ford however was a pretty good NASCAR engine. The engine was made for top speed, unfortunately after 1970 Ford killed all racing development and the engine died. But the 428 Cobra jet lives in many Mustangs and Torinos. And this beautiful Torino being shown here is a perfect example of how Ford built something better looking than Chevy with the Chevelle.

The 385 engine family (429 and 460) was far ahead of the old FE design and had more power, but the engines were also heavier and the cars had to grow for those engines and got heavier too. Not a win/win Situation, but those Ford's pretty much still hold their own The Boss was truly a horrible street and strip engine

Randy Coursey, last 428 in a Torino was 1969. Last 428 in a Mustang was 1970. 429 was not a good street engine? You delusional much?
