1970 Ford Torino Super Cobra Jet vs 1969 Chevy Camaro Super Sport. Factory Stock Drag Race. Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race.
First car is a 1970 Ford Torino. The other a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. The 1969 Camaro has a 396 V8, and the Torino has a 429 V8. The Torino Super Cobra Jet was rated 375 horsepower, and the L78 396 in the Chevelle was also rated 375 horsepower. Both cars have a 4-speed manual transmission. The Torino Super Cobra Jet has 4.30 rear gears, while the 1969 Camaro has 4.10 rear gears. The Super Cobra Jet is heavy, weighing 4206 pounds, including the driver. The Camaro is lighter at 3612 pounds, including driver. Car Life tested a L78 Camaro with a 4-speed and 3.73 rear gears and it ran 14.77 seconds @ 98.72 mph. Motor Trend tested the Super Cobra Jet Torino with 3.91 gears and a 4-speed and it ran 13.99 seconds @ 101 mph.

The rules for PSMCDR are listed below:
For 1955 to 1979 musclecars built in United States and Canadian assembly plants with a minimum warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles.
Any car running faster than 11.50 will be disqualified and will not have a qualifying time recorded.
Any convertible running faster than 13.50 will be disqualified and will not have a qualifying time recorded.
Casting numbers must be correct for the year and horsepower claimed including intake manifold, heads, and exhaust manifolds. Blocks do not have to be "numbers matching," but they must be the correct displacement. Overbores up to .070" are allowed. Stock cranks only.
All Engines - compression ratio 1.5 extra points allowed over advertised.
The camshaft must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed for the type of lifter (hydraulic or solid). Roller cams NOT allowed.
The valve train must be factory stock for the year, make, and horsepower claimed.
The ignition system must be stock, including the distributor, cap, coil, and wires. Points may be replaced with any electronic conversion that fits under the stock distributor cap.
The carburetor must be correct for the year, make, and horsepower claimed. Jetting and metering changes are permitted. THE CHOKE ASSEMBLY MUST BE IN PLACE AND FUNCTIONAL!
Cast-iron exhaust manifolds are mandatory and must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed. Internal modifications to the exhaust manifolds are NOT allowed. Under no circumstances will headers be allowed, including those cars that came with headers delivered in the trunk. Pipes must be routed as they were originally for the year, make, model, and engine combination. Mufflers must be stock looking in design, that is, oval in shape. No glasspacks or straight pipes allowed unless installed as original equipment. Maximum muffler inlet and outlet size is 2.5 inches. X & H pipes allowed.
The radiator must be correct for the year, make, model, and horsepower claimed. No lightweight, aluminum radiators allowed.
The camshaft must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed for the type of lifter (hydraulic or solid). Roller cams NOT allowed. Duration at .050" lobe lift must be within 1% of factory specs. Lift at the valve must be within 2% of factory specs. Maximum stall limited to 2200 rpm.
The transmission must be correct for year, make, model and engine of the car. 3-speed manuals may be upgraded to the correct 4-speed if originally available.
The rear axle must be of the same manufacturer as the car. Any gear ratio is allowed.
Reproduction tires or radial tires only.You are allowed to run tires one size over stock.
Factory wheels only.

Nice matchup! In 1980 we had the Ford versus Chevy thing going in my little town. I had a 71C 10 short bed with a 350 built to about 425 hp, turbo 400, 373 posi that weighed only 3,500 lbs. It ran mid-12s in the quarter. I used to Street race 2 to 3 nights a week. One night we were set up for me to run three Cobra Torinos, all of which had headers, gears, aftermarket cam, etc. I showed up with slicks and open headers. The first was 351 Cleveland four-speed that I beat by 3 cars. The second one was a 429 automatic. On the first run one of my slicks got partway off the pavement when he crossed the center line and I almost flipped my truck. We agreed to run it again and I beat him by a car. Before I could line up with the last one, which was honestly the fastest car - a really hot 429 SCJ drag pack four-speed also with slicks and open headers, our lookout heard over the scanner that the highway patrol had been dispatched, so we all left. There had to be 150 spectators at that race. That was the top night of my glory days of street racing.

I made a bet with my husband, in mid-February of 1978, which I won, and MY prize was the Maroon 1971 Ford Torino GT Sportsroof, with a 351C, factory stock 4V, C6 Auto console shift, black interior, like this one, with the same high back buckets seats, plus hide-away headlights, (but no laser stripe, no a/c, and no rear window slats) which I had been drooling over on an almost daily basis. I had found it at a local used car dealer affiliated with a bigger Ford Dealer at the next town north, a couple of weeks prior, based on a tip from a brother-in-law who knew I was a Ford Freak. So, I won the bet, and the car was my 21st Birthday present, in February of 1978. It only had about 40,000 miles on it - very decent for a 7 year old car! We got it for a $1000 loan from our local bank, and we put $300 down on it. We had been married 2 years, no kids, no bills beyond the usual rent, utilities, groceries, etc. I drove it to the BMV in the next town (Indiana farm country, where every town is 8 miles away!) on my birthday, and licensed it. I loved that car like my own child, and took good care of her for about 15 years. Unfortunately, in the Midwest, due to the heavy use of road salt in the winter time, most cars eventually succumb to "Midwest Car Cancer," and we were unable to invest the money it would take to restore her frame long after the kids came along a few years later, and we finally bought our one and only house. But, while we had her, I drove her everywhere, including 1,000 mile road trips to the east coast to spend holidays or vacations visiting my family, and the two trips she took me to the hospital to have our kids, bring them home from there, (in car seats of course!) and every other daily adventure we took. She ended up being an "organ donor" to another similar Torino GT Sportsroof, belonging to a friend who restored them. He gave me a good price for her, but I couldn't be home when he came to get her. I just couldn't do it. I still miss her, 30 years later after we had to do that! I've still got pictures of course, but we can't post them here! I never took her to a track, or ran any real street races with her, but the impromptu performances she offered up when challenged while on the wide 4 lane, flat country highways was truly impressive. I never actually raced her against anything that was beneath her, and we won most of them. I surprised most of the other drivers, who was probably thinking that a woman in what looked like a "plain Jane grocery getter" couldn't possibly be any actual competition! Surprise!😃 I had great reaction times, and perseverance, and that's a lot of what it takes! I don't see hardly any Torinos anymore, especially not of that particular color, and I didn't even see too many of them then, when I was much younger. This Torino in the pictures looks fairly close, but it looks somewhat brighter red than mine was. But, I guess that just makes her that much more special, hmmm? 😉⚘

Back in the late 70s my dad had a 70 Torino Cobra it was the Super Cobra Jet 4 Speed 4:30 rear gears had the solid lifter cam oil cooler all the goodies it was white with black shaker hood and black rear window loovers I have several pictures of the car I wish he would have never sold it I love that car

My buddy had a 66 chevelle SS with the 396/375 and he said to me and I quote I USE TO EAT THOSE FORDS UP that 396/375 turbo 400 trans.was the ticket street racing. R.I.P Ronnie Hayes street racer in the early 70's.

Went car shopping with mom and dad it was 1968 dad bought mom a big old Ford custom 4door with a 302 v8 the car was absolutely bare bones not even power steering, mean while there was a new gold 68 Torino fastback siting in the show room looking sweeeeet but dad had to support 5 kids a wife and house so the Torino was a no go

My buddy ordered that torino new in Philadelphia. It was originally no ps or pb and originally it was Vermilion (orange). Its a real scj 4.30 detroit locker car. It was a street racer from Philly thru the 70’s

In the day I owned a 1970 Ford Torino Super Cobra Jet 30 over with TRW racing pistons and 3:01 gears and of course a 4 speed manual. Only one car walked away from me like I was standing still on the highway. It was a Pantera

not exactly an ideal chevy vs. ford matchup but an interesting race just the same. i’d like to have seen both cars hooking up and seen how everything turned out then. my guess is that 600 lbs would be the deciding factor. thanks for sharing. i love fast fords but i love great races too.

My neighbor had a 1968 Torino Cobra Jet with the 428 and 4 speed, ran really strong. I don't know enough about Fords to know the big differences between the 428 and 429 Cobra Jet engines. The body looked better to me in 1968.

428 is fe block the 429 is from the 385 family in other words two completely different animals.

Yes, different engine families, similarities ended with the Cobra Jet name. The 428 was a brother to the legendary 427 and the 429 to the BOSS 428 was called FE and the 429 was the 385 engine family

..that is one heavy Torino ...base was 3773 lbs., typical for that class, but an extra 400+ lbs. on this girl, I doubt the SCJ added that much ...perhaps the driver has just left Denny's with a full tank?

Both cars had major traction issues in that left lane. The Torino on the second run, the Camaro on the third. But yes - listen, and you can hear the Ford missed a shift.

@@paulplack490 The secret to better traction, with bias-play tires is to over-inflate the. Ford Drag Team taught me that in 1970 and it worked. My all-options '69 Boss 302 pure stock Mustang ran consistent low 13's and few high 12's. I bought it new at TASCA Ford in RI, and I still own it today. With street legal drag radials, it turns mid 12's consistently.

Actually well matched cars by their individual ETs, the Camaro is just a nip faster. Torino was impressive for that weight.

Camaro should have been paired with a CobraJet Mustang, then the weight difference wouldn't be 600 pounds. if the Camaro had tp put 600 pounds in his car he would have lost all 3!!!!!!! Using the given weights and their respective mph the Ford made 390 HP and the Chevy made 320HP.

@@2429scj yeah but by that logic the Camaro should've been given a 427 then. Also the stock L78 actually makes around 425 hp, maybe a touch less, but definitely more than the rated 375, so where you got 320 from I have no clue. And the 428 makes around 375 hp (sources vary on that, and much more torque than the L78) so... Not sure where you're getting your numbers.

@@2429scj Ford 429 SCJ Cobra was rated 375 HP, not 390 HP. Camaro was rated at 360 HP but Torino Cobra is 600 pounds heavier.

@@danraymond1253 '70 Torino was 429 SCJ, not a 428 car. Last 428 Fairlane/Torino was '69. Last 428 Mustang was 1970. Only the COPO Camaro, or Yenko, had the 427 engine and they were NOT factory production stock.

And I didn't say anything about the COPO being factory production stock, even though technically they were, you just had to know which dealer to go to and what strings to pull, as they weren't advertised due to GM rules. And that Camaro is rated 375 hp, not 360, even though those same exact same motors used in Corvettes a few years earlier were rated at 425 hp, not 375. There was a Dyno done on a stock L78 relatively recently and it put out 425 from the factory.

Great race the Camaro in the third race got a little squirrelly in second gear those cobra Torinos are beast and the L-78 is no joke ether I’ve seen a lot of people shocked that thought they were regular 396 rats.

Yeah, he came off the clutch just a bit too hard and lost traction. Just remember, though, that 429ci Ford is probably closer to 450hp stock to propel that boat to those times. In smaller cars, that 429ci SCJ has ran some insane times in stock trim.

I had a '73 Camaro Z28 clone, the only race I was in(other than my future Chevy truck) was against a 5.0 with(if I remember correctly) headers and exhaust. I had a QJ 2bbl and manifolds/stock mufflers on a 4bolt 350with 3.73s...he got me. Mine had too much cam for the 2bbl.

QJ typically means QUADRAJET which always means 4 barrels. GM made a 2 barrel version called a DUALJET

Shows how much the driver can often be the deciding factor in a race. To be consistent off the line takes a lot of practice or just raw talent. Loved seeing the Super Cobra Jet Torino. I had no idea they were that heavy. Now I have to wonder why we see so few Mustangs in these races and did they ever put that engine in the Mustang?

@@geraldlafleur7776 Didnt need to adjust for unleaded fuel that early. I owned and drove a 71 Torino GT Sportsroof with the 351C, 4V, C6 auto console shift, from '78 to '91. We were able to find higher octane leaded gas for it in the late '70s/early '80s. I don't recall when leaded gas finally bit the dust, but I know we drove on it for a good long while.

Several unanswered questions in this match. Most notably, what happened to the Ford in race 2? Seemed like the Camaro broke an axle in race 3.

Which is faster? First round - Camaro goes red, lifts, and the Torino coasts through with the win. 2nd round, uh oh, Torino misses third (I think). Camaro lays down a good run though. I couldn't wait for a real full run on the third. Ok, third race. The Camaro spins hard in 2nd and race over. Classic racing really how hard it is to run a hot stick car under pressure. Love it.

Those 428 and 429’s were WAY under rated. A stock 428 Cobra jet rated 335 hp was actually a little over 400 hp. Insurance rates were skyrocketing back then so the manufactures made up some lower horsepower ratings. Lol

Something peculiar about this race the third race is what the Torino should have been running consistently, was he having problems or was he sandbagging. It appears in the third race the Camaro had some problems. Both great cars love to see these great old cars being run.

I feel as far as the engine goes a 429 CJ will stomp the 396 every time. BUT when it's got all that extra weight to pull it's a pretty even race. Too bad they didn't get a good pass at the same time. As always thanks for the vid

@@mjs28s Ok sorry this is long but... Mostly based on my personal experiences in the late 70's and early 80's and common sense. Stop and think a minute. The 396 is giving up 33 CI if nothing else. The 429 has good flowing canted valve heads much like the Chevy but the bore is considerably bigger than the 396 so the valves aren't so shrouded. The 396 actually has notches in the cylinders the valves are so close. I was never all that impressed with stock or stockish 396 Chevrolets. I've driven them and they ran ok but I have also outran them with a stock 350 Corvette and a low compression 390 Ford that had headers and a Crane Fireball cam. They gained a good rep on the street but mostly because there were so many of them and a lot of them were taking on small blocks and the previous FE Ford engines ie 390-428 that the heads were kind of limited on. If you want to go Chevy vs Ford bs the 429CJ is NOT the one to pick on. The only muscle era Mopar engine a 396 would outrun is probably a 318 or possibly a 340 in an E body but not a 340 in an A body. Certainly never saw one outrun a 383 or 440 in anything.

There's a video of an 18k 429 SCJ on the engine dyno. With headers it put out 484 hp.....stone stock

I expected better times from both of these performers(MONSTERS), especially the SCJ Torino. I don't believe these two cars were restored to Pure Stock specs or BOTH of them would likely be running in the 12's(maybe/hopefully)high 11's. Regardless, made for some great drags. Something about the more rarer muscle cars built/restored to run P/S drags puts a rise in my Levi's. Just sumptin about restoring a AWESOME car to it's full potential in the quarter mile does it for me. Thanks C&Z

Well if you mean restored to factory specs by "Pure Stock specs" than no, these cars would be slower. This is evidenced by the times they tested them at back then. They have some minor tweaking to go faster.

What I don't understand is how KZbin videos show that a 1970 Red Torino 429 scj can vary with times of 13.71 vs Red Cuba with 440 of 13.78 on here to another 1970 Torino 429 scj of 12.93 to a Transam of 13.23 to a 1970 Red Torino 429scj of 13.64 vs a Camaross396 of 13.59 to a 1970 Torino 429scj with 13.08 vs Olds w-31 which wound up doing real bad so didn't write down time to finally a 1970 Torino 429scj of 12.72 to a 1969 Yenko 427 Camaro of 12.0 then 12.59. Then it was mentioned that Motor Trend ran a 1970 Torino 429 scj with 4 speed and driver to 4206 lbs. to a 13.99 time in Feb. 1970. These times ranged so badly that I thought maybe read end as one guy stated that stock was geared 3.91 with Detroit Locker gearing being 4.30 but that couldn't be right as narrator advised 1970 Red Torino with 429scj had 4.57 factory gearing for 12.72 race vs 1969 Yenko 427 Camaro so something else had to account for difference of 1.27 seconds so what?????

someone should have thought of putting a scj in a little sporty type, rear wheel drive vehicle. not too small , but kind of like a “pony” sized vehicle. -guess we’ll just have to dream and speculate.

The can't run nitrous in these classes. That's you're opinion about the 396 but you watch the video again and you'll see he lost traction from so much torque he was spinning off the line with skinny tires. Chevy didn't stand a chance? Did you see the 2nd round hoss? If you ain't never owned a big block you wouldn't understand.

Camaro almost stahls the clutch the first race almost losing 4th,plus gets a red loggt!! Does great the 2nd one and stahls 3rd or 4th the last one,stop worrying about your opponent driving,worry about you driving your own car snd the results are mich easier under pressure!a It'll always be close,don't try to win or lose,worry about driving and letting the car do the talking!! It works every single race!!

@1979 Camaro Z28 even C&Z mentioned the Camaro had traction issues. He didn't stall. He infact almost lost it and ran into the wall. But he saved it. I been there. Those big blocks can build up some momentum. Talk about beasts.

you look at this old iron and think how would things have gone if the 427 cammer had been accepted as a stock car the overhead cam design produced 635 hp in the early 60s here you watch 2 newer design less hp at 14 sec 1/4 miles 4 cyl sedans nowadays, the cars in this era seemed to be infected with politics and laws now we see the overhead cam back producing hp that the best 8 cyl produced in a 4 cyl off the showroom floor with small upgrades able to compete with 427 cammer numbers just think where we would be if not for crying a---holes try to control the market

Camaro: dear old rat boy racer underrated big block which blue oval got the head designs from on the 429 in a pony car body vs a intermediate (Chevelle is an intermediate body closer to the Torino Camaro is on a mustang playing field pony car get it ??) Show us all the similarities between the Ford heads and the Chevy heads. A 396 with an aluminum intake vs a cast iron intake on the Ford. The only thing that got eaten for lunch is the Camaro.
