Ah. Australian? Canadian? The Phoenix name here was short-lived and I think done by '62 or so. Canada and Australia got some great variants with Chrysler. Some really attractive trim packages and occasional body and interior differences.

The land yacht road cruisers of the era and gas was less than a buck a gallon. $22 filled the tank and $50 for a night out with your girlfriend was an extravaganza like fugetabouit. I was thirteen. I would get my father or brother to take me to a dealership to see if I could get an Imperial brochure (they were usually hidden away so brochure grabbers like me couldn't get one) but when I did get one, I would read it and stare at the pictures for days. Good memories!

@@marko7843 Correct, they were aiming at the 1% crowd and a lot of young people today will never get that. Both cars were around $7000 brand new including Cadillac. Mercedes Bendz were nice then, but BMW's looked like a Campbell's soup can and crank windows were still common in both. Toyota and Honda were nothing like thye are now. In the Beverly Hills Cop movies 1984 and 1987, Cadillac and Lincoln were common in both movies and still common in ritzy areas like Beverly Hills.

On exterior looks alone, I prefer the Imperial. Imperial also still had wind-vents while the Lincoln stopped offering them in ‘70. The Imperial also used GM’s superior tilt-wheel mechanism.

Considering that a lot of people drive full size quad cab pickups and SUVs as a family vehicle today, the old 70s iron is not much bigger nor heavier than what's currently on the road. With a modern engine and transmission, I'd bet the engineers could get 20-25 mpg out of an Imperial sized sedan today. And with the resulting lower operating cost, you wouldn't need a pimp's income to afford it.

Never drove an Imperial. My Folks were Oldsmobile 98 and Toronado. But I always felt the Imperial stood out as a very different luxury car and 1970 IMO was the most beautiful Imperial. Darn shame it didn’t sell better. Molar spark plugs were no good.

My grandmother bought a 1971 Imperial, she would pick the car and color but her driver West would order it. He got it with the 440 TNT and limited-slip, dual climate controls and, I believe every option. I ended up getting that car in 1979, I've never had a car I liked more. Unfortunately, my mother borrowed it and had an accident and it came to rest in the Concord River. Forty years later I still dream about it occasionally, I would love to have another.

The car went off a raised road, knocked a small tree down, fell about 10 feet (bending the frame very badly), and came to rest at a steep angle with the front third underwater and jammed into the mud. It took two medium-sized wreckers to get it back on the road.

I'd rather have the pillared 4 door sedan of the Continental over the pillar-less 4 door sedan of the Imperial because during a side impact there's no protection without roof pillars, the side easily caves in. On long cars like that I'd rather have a full perimeter frame which is far more rigid than a unibody on long chassis likes those which tended to flex, and the perimeter frame blocks out a lot of noise. (Body hardware wasn't as good on Chrysler products back then, my aunt had a 1969 Fury and you could literally see daylight through the doors). Also back in those days people preferred cushy rides over hard rides, and the Continental's coil springs gave those cars cushy rides, where as the Imperial's front torsion bar and rear leaf spring suspension gave a harder ride. Cadillac's construction and suspension was similar to Continental's, so both the Continental and Cadillac had a smoother and quieter ride than Imperial, possibly one of the reasons why Imperial didn't sell as well as Continental and Cadillac. Although on the Cadillac you did have to order the Fleetwood to get the pillared 4 door sedan, pillars didn't come standard on the 4 door Sedan Deville. Also Imperial didn't offer a personal luxury car in 1970 like Lincoln and Cadillac, the Continental Mark III and the Cadillac Eldorado. As far as sedan's, the Imperial was a good looking car though, especially from that fuselage era.

Sadly, no one cared about safety. Notice how the lap belts were almost hidden as very few people wore them. The guy in the car wasn't even shown wearing a lap belt much less the shoulder belt. I was a teenager back then and probably the only one that wore both the lap AND shoulder belts. My friends thought I was nuts for buckling up.

@@fairfaxcat1312 The Lincoln Continental 4 door sedan B pilar went from the floor to the roof, the Imperial 4 door hardtop's B pillar went from the floor and stopped at the top of the door, it didn't go all the way up to roof like the Lincoln's. In a side impact the Imperial's half pillar would collapse. Not as sturdy as Lincolns full length pilar. Plus Chrysler's body hardware wasn't that great back then. My aunt had a late 1960's Plymouth Fury, you could see daylight through the doors.

He wasn't wearing his seat belt. I figured that buckling up might prevent that or worse from happening to me. And a couple of years later a drunk driver hit me head on. Because of the size of the car and the fact that I was wearing both the lap and shoulder belts, I walked away with only bruises from the belts and minor cuts and scratches.

Our family back in the day always had Lincoln continentals. We had three different ones. A 1969 with subside doors , than 72 or 73 continental and then a 76 ,. The last one we kept only 6 months because the summer of 76 we were going to Europe for several weeks, so my dad decided to order a Mercedes 300 diesel, picked it up at factory even though we just a brand new. car at the time. Had to sell Lincoln before leaving on trip. All 3 Lincoln’s were beautiful cars and still are. The 69 is my favorite one of the 3.

The Mercedes turned out to be lemon through the 20 years we had it. Ever while in Europe while riding with family we had issues with it out of the factory. Originally ordered at 77 model but ended up with76 model near end if model year.

Ok I happened to be the oldest son of a wonderful Dad, who actually owned both Imperial and Lincoln’s. The first I remember when I was only 9 years old, Dad bought a beautiful 64 Lincoln in metallic gold, with beautiful matching silk like cloth interior. But that car turned out to be a real lemon, stranding the whole family at the beach, plus Dad at work twice, with a bum starter/flywheel issues. So he traded that in on an amazing 64 Imperial Crown Coupe! In metallic turquoise with black vinyl roof made out of a unique vinyl with different texture that I’ve never seen again. Very soft black leather interior, that car was really something special, I remember a game we would all play, because the car was so quiet, we would see who could hear a noise first!! Then Mom said we were going to have the forth sibling and we all could not fit properly in the Imperial, so Dad was forced to trade in for a wagon. Not just any wagon, no Dad special ordered a 68 Chrysler Town&Country Beach Wagon! A 9 passenger beast with a 440/4 brl dual exhaust monster! But Dads Mom ended up selling him her 69 Thunderbird in a couple years, that led Dad back to Lincoln’s. There was a new Lincoln every couple years through the 70’s, a 71 coupe, a 73 coupe, then a 75 Town Coupe with fancy landau roof. Finally a 78 Town Car all in baby blue with matching soft leather. That car ended up being my daily driver for a few years, from 1986-1990. I still feel to this day the big Chrysler’s were the grandest!

This was such a beautiful car, Chrysler just was not aggressive enough with its promotion. National Geographic in the 1960s-1970 were loaded with Cadillac and Lincoln ads but I don't recall seeing anything on the Imperial.

you could also use the glove box on the Continental as a tray, he didn't mention that. That was very useful on the 1975 model my parents had. The layout of the interior didn't change much from 1969-1977. I don't believe the Imperial had a better ride. Ford suspensions have always been pretty good on their line larger cars. You can have the Chrysler, i'll stick with the Lincoln.

Torsion bar suspension was much more stable but sacrificed some of that floaty cloud ride. Chrysler cars of that era were similar to modern day BMW for the segment. They had a firmer, sportier ride. I personally prefer the torsion bar suspension.

Before the insurance companies and the government ruined all cars for the next 20 years. 70--72 were the last years before lower compression and emissions controls devastated performance, and the malaise set in and workers didn't give a shit about doing their jobs - they were gonna stick it to da man, man!

In the early 80's the cheap way to get a decent ride was to buy a readily available small block E-body and then buy an old Imperial. Take the 440 and 727 AT out of the Imperial, pull the small block and change the motor mounts, the 440 drops right in, shorten the driveshaft and add dual exhaust. You'd have a quick car for $1,000 ~ $1,500.

I was just thinking the other day how back in the 80's and even 90's there were all kinds of Ford wagons around with 460's in them (although most were 400's) and lots of run out T-birds with 429's, and stuff like that. And then "poof"....they were all gone. I should have grabbed a few when they were nearly free for the taking..

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! (And I grew up in Lincolns and never understood why the 60's models had interior hood releases while the early 70's didn't!?!) Also, the windows were probably quieter than the Imperial, but Chrysler used the space in those doors MUCH better! To be fair, ALL Chryslers seemed to have 3-speed wipers while the rest of Detroit didn't, but then the Lincoln had Interval Wipers (stolen?) and the Chrysler dash-lights just SUCKED. I have to give the Imperial the Tilt-Tele steering column. I think they bought it from GM, while Ford's was unique but inferior. On the other hand, I never heard of special rear heat/cool in anything but a limousine... Ah, yes, the Chrysler torsion-bar front suspension PLUS the brakes and Warranty - That's a big point. I guess my main preference is because the 440s I drove never had the TORQUE of the mighty 460 in the Lincolns... and NO, the new Lincolns were nowhere near as bottomed-out slugs as the 60's versions.

I bought an Imperial LeBaron Coupe late in the model year of 1970 when the 1971s were showing up. I got a great deal on it. Within a year the upholstery on the driver door split away. The "flood" lighted instrument panel (which was like someone shining a flashlight on everything creating a lot of glare at night) developed an intermittent, making the light flicker off and on. The air conditioner compressor went out. And on a fast trip to Las Vegas the center drag link and pitman arm just came apart. Result? No steering. Chrysler had a serious problem with reliable quality. But it looked cool. There's that. :-(

It would be really interesting to see how the mileage would compare to all the trucks and vans people are driving now... especially the pickups with the 5 foot tall vertical prows pushing through the wind as though aerodynamics had never been discovered!
