The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.

Watching this race, one always wonders if ABC missed a golden opportunity to have Ned Jarrett as part of their NASCAR broadcast team during the 1970s. As far as I know, this might have been the only time he ever served as a color commentator with ABC Sports. I'm not sure he would have wanted to do their taped races on WWOS, but they could have had him as the color commentator on the races they did live (1970 was the first year they broadcast races live, though they would not do a live start-to-finish broadcast of a race longer than 200 miles until 1986). The irony there was that the two men he was paired with on ESPN for a dozen years, Bob Jenkins and Benny Parsons, would do all of ABC's NASCAR races from 1994-2000.

I’m so glad he survived it! Yes those birds are such amazing looking! Cars back then surely were so much more innovative than today! I love this era and I love the all mechanical construction. Cars could be repaired in your driveway, like they should be!

The wing would've been about as effective if it had been similar the ones on cars like the Subaru Impreza WRX STi and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. The size of the wings on those Chrysler cars was actually rather silly. 😅
@rolux4853
@rolux4853 9 ай бұрын
@@DanArnets1492 what are you trying to say with your comment? That a car that’s developed 30-40 years later is more sensibly designed? You know there was no computer design back then? Those cars were designed by hand on a drawing board, not with a cad program. They also couldn’t do easy aero testing because cfd wasn’t around back then. Even formula one just started the first downforce experiments in 1968 and they where even more out of proportion than the Daytona and superbirds wings! Just google 1968 formula 1 car wing and you’ll see a car with two picnic tables bolted onto it. Hell indycar got the first real wings even later then nascar! The first aero devices in Indycar were just a broadened body. You should see things according to their timeline, not from a modern perspective. Other high class racing series at that time were still producing lift. Can Am is a great good example for that. So please just think a bit or do a quick google search before you post something wrong. The NASCAR nose and wing design was revolutionary back then. Not only for NASCAR, but Motorsport itself! I’m not trying to offend you here, please don’t see my reply as that. I’m an automotive engineer and I can’t stand all the misinformation that’s being spread in the internet that leads to more people believing wrong things and destroying history with it.

It's amazing to be able to go back and watch this significant moment in NASCAR history. 1. After Petty's wreck and the tragic death of Joe Weatherly NASCAR would require the use of window nets. 2. David Pearson's crew put down a heater at 17.5 and came out with fresh rubber and 33 laps to go. Had Bobby Isaac not hit the wall and blown a tire this could have been an incredible finish. I think Pearson would have caught him. 3. "If you want to win Darlington, bring a Ford". This was the 13th win for a Ford at Darlington in it's 32nd race. Ford has a total of 31 wins at Darlington today.

I recall when Wide World of Sports obtained the home movie film of the Petty crash itself, where it was televised a week or so after the race. That same film footage can be found on KZbin.

A bit of astounding trivia in the aftermath of this race: Richard Petty broke his shoulder from that crash, yet, by June he had recovered well enough to win the Falstaff 400 NASCAR *_road race_* at Riverside; and that was back in the era prior to power steering. That win was not a fluke, either, having led 149 laps out of the 153 lap race.
@davidthayer6969

LOL well, his win was a FLUKE because for the first time in a DECADE there where NO factory Fords entered at a NASCAR Riverside race and Fords had won EVERY RIverside race up to that point...........even Petty said it was the most boring race he ever ran........he said that coming onto the long straightaway he would slow down and watch fans fighting in the stands to fight off boredom.

@@davidthayer6969Lol, that's a pretty big assumption there. Do you have a SOURCE from Petty on that claim??? I respect your knowledge on the subject, but I'm starting to not take you seriously anymore with all the constant disrespect towards the winged cars. I understand that they underperformed but are WAYYY over hyped, but there are cars from every company that are over-hyped, including Ford...

@@davidthayer6969 Thank you for being reasonable and polite with your response, and no hard feelings either, that's why I said even if I don't agree I still respect your knowledge on the topic. I completely understand that everyone has their favorite make or model in any form of auto racing. As long as you or anyone else has the proof to back up any kind of comments made here that's 100 percent alright on my part. You have obviously done proper research on the subject and I completely respect that, I just wish more people took the time to actually research what they comment on before they start to leave their "point" as you probably know Mopars are mainly my thing but all cars from Detroit are cool or special in my book, including AMC and Studebaker. Have a wonderful day, and happy holidays too!

A home movie of the crash later showed that Petty's car bounced off the wall and did cartwheels, which dissipated the energy of the collision. In addtion, the slowness of the Darlington track speed [compared to Daytona's] may have also contributed to Petty's survival. Had Petty's car hit the wall _straight-on,_ it could have resulted in his death. The Dale Earnhardt, Sr. crash, at a higher speed into the wall with little deflection to dissipate the crash's energy, is sad evidence of such a scenario.

For the viewers that were not around back in that NASCAR era, the televised, full _flag-to-flag_ races by a major TV network were still years away. ABC-TV Sports, when they did televise the races live, always did it when the race was underway. Possibly if ABC-TV had gotten the additional sponsorship dollars, and if NASCAR was agreeable to it, flag-to-flag televised races could have been a reality by 1970.

Doubtful, as it was the tracks, not NASCAR, who controlled their TV rights, and there were some tracks who didn't even want WWOS to air the race in taped, 30 min highlight form, much less flag to flag. Back then, there was a fear among track operators that TV would cause attendance to drop. The Owners/Drivers didn't mind as before the days of big, corporate sponsorship, the prize money won was the main income source. And the networks didn't think audiences would have the attention span to watch a 500 mile race flag to flag anyway. CBS took a big gamble in 1979 with the Daytona 500, and got lucky with 1) the fact the eastern seaboard was snowed in north of Georgia, and 2) it was one of the most thrilling Daytona 500s. Even then, CBS and the other networks didn't really start doing full 500 mile races until Cable/ESPN showed that there was an audience.
