Looking more closely,Ralph Jones stayed in his lane as the leaders were going around him while Pond didn't stay high and came down on Jones causing that wreck..Pond likely thought he had cleared Jones when coming down but miscalculated....

I like how in the crash that brokenthe pit wall, the guy with the fire extinguisher threw it down instead of working on the fire before working to get the guy out. That shortsighted move could have gotten the driver killed.
