This game was the most exciting footy match I ever went to. In Melbourne, at that time, the rivalry between Carlton and Collingwood was legend and seats were virtually impossible to get. My family, all mad Carlton supporters, could not find tickets for love or money until "Uncle" Frank who was President of the Collingwood Social Club, got us seats with all the Collingwood members and us four isolated and alone Carlton supporters surrounded like a scene from Zulu. At halftime a great many Woodsmen were chanting, "We've got it in the ba-ag, we've got it in the ba-ag, etc" while the rest were actually popping Champagne bottles, and the ones nearest us, were rubbing it in mercilessly. My mother a 5 foot tall giant of a woman replied, they should "shut up" and not count their chickens because we hadn't brought out our secret weapon yet. That was the best she could come back with, but inside we all pretty much agreed with the Collingwood mob, which was that, we were stuffed, buggered, gone for all money. Well, the crowd was unbelievable, there were legs dangling over the edge of the grandstand, people hanging off the triangular braced stanchions, going up to the roof like human totem poles. As well they were standing in the aisles and walkways, just like human sardines wedged in bloody everywhere. There was an official tally of over 120 thousand, but many, myself included could easily believe the real figure was probably closer to 140 thousand. As a virtual unknown, the blonde-headed dynamo "Teddy Hopkins" exploded out in the third quarter and booted three quick goals, we knew we were in for something special, and even my mum took credit saying he was the secret weapon she'd predicted, to which they replied she must be a witch. Dad chimed in, "only if you can't bloody spell", which was right on the money. So the excitement built, the game was won, and I got a memory to last a lifetime. I did feel sorry for the Woods, I had more good friends among their supporters than those who supported Carlton, but they had more than their fair share of tossers too, which directly contributed to them losing the game. Bobby Rose, the Collingwood Coach later relayed the tale of how at halftime, and partly due to the immense crowd, they could not keep all the back slappers out of the rooms, who were of a mindset just like those we sat with, in the crowd. Not only could he not get his players together to plan their second half, but he also had drunken fools pushing bottles of booze at them and congratulating them for winning their first flag, in 22 years. Literally a whole room full of back slappers. All in all, I think my gratitude for this amazing day must go to the Collingwood Social Club, firstly for the generousity and good sportsmanship to give a few Carlton folks a seat or four, (thanks "Uncle" Frank McKernan, a true gentleman). And lastly, the drunken tosspots that stopped Bobby Rose from coaching out the game as he wanted to. I always felt sorry that the loudmouths who forced their way into the rooms were the very same ones calling for the sacking of Bobby Rose for losing the game. Still, what a bloody game. Thank you so much for uploading this gem of history that lets an old timer reminisce a bit.

You tell a great story Maurice. You made it seem like it was only yesterday. I was only 8 years old in 1970, and I believe this game was the late, great Ron Barassi's crowning glory. The Baggers revived the spirit shown in this GF again in 1999 PF (Koutafides), 2013 Elimination final (Judd) and again this year. The win against Melbourne in the finals was inspirational, as was the whole back end of their 2023 season. I guess the lesson here is to never go the early crow. Fat Lady Sings. Go Blue boys!!!

I was there as a 23 yo Collingwood fan in standing room in the Northern Grandstand. Some Carlton fans were leaving at half time. But the tension in the second half was heart stopping. We stood there stunned when the final siren blew. Couldn’t believe what we had just seen. Barassi changed football that day with his instructions at half time to play on and handball at every opportunity. The commentators noticed it. And Teddy Hopkins played the one big game of his life. What a privilege to have witnessed it.

It was a pleasure watching this. The noise was incredible, all the streamers over the ground. 1 umpire, kicking straight down the center. Back when players had to have full time jobs. I have heard of the legend of Teddy Hopkins, but never seen the footage. Reminisce about the days when there were 12 teams, all in Victoria, crowds enormous and the famous 'Jezalenko you beauty,'. Dont barrack for either team, laugh at 'yards' instead of 'meters'. But would go back to the football played then, compared to now in a heartbeat

well MixMan , there is a ditinct cognitive change in game style along with positional changes , Barassi , a seasoned Vet in these situations in those years , he knew from his years at Melbourne that anything is possible, also knowing, that with a 44 pt 1/2 time lead , Collingwood would be not as focused a the half , big lead , lotta back slapping , so he reved em up , changed game style and Carlton kick 7 ,goals in ten minutes, and Collingwood got out to a 21 pt lead in the last Q , but Carlton just kept attacking cuppla turnovers cost goals but still Carlton would kick 2/3 goal to 1 it was at the 25 minute mark Carlton got in front , then Jezza , the BOG , seals it with a piece of Jesaulenko magic, what a champion , But they were all good when it became a contest , extremely methodical football by carlton , the phases it employed , slowly getting complete control , a brilliant example of why Aussie Rules is surely the best football code on the planet ,.GO BLUES..... Barassi urged his team at half-time to abandon the positional game of the time and advance by ceaseless run and handball, so changing footy forever. Barassi said he had merely taken them back to a game in round 20 when they had fallen five goals behind Hawthorn, then by frenetic running had turned it around to win by five goals.

Fantastic game. I was only 13 and in tears at half time. Then at the end of the 3rd quarter I said to my Dad at least we won't get thrashed. Then history and we pulled off an amazing win. Notwithstanding the fact that I am a Carlton supporter I felt sorry for Bob Rose as he was a really nice person and deserved a premiership.
@melthoidserendipity13323 жыл бұрын
It's even worse when you consider during the year Collingwood won every clash. including a 12 goal win at Vic Park when Carlton only kicked 3 goals for the whole game. Pies had 10 more scoring shots in the 2nd semi win. Those misses in the first quarter were bad but there was no excuse for so many players going missing in the last qtr. Phil Carmen cost them in 77. There were no excuses for this loss. Or the 73 prelim when they led Richmond by 6 goals at halftime. There's something haunting about Butch Gale exclaiming in the last qtr, 'I've got a terrible feeling you know'

Hey Melthoid serendipity , 1977 ,was that the year Collingwood led the first GF by 27 or something like that at 3/4 time , Carman got suspended for doing a typical Carman , was at Moorabbin the day he headbutted umpire carbury , lost it ,did the by then Bomber,. maybe but like my Collingwood mate said to me the Monday after the 1979 GF ,i said , spouse your gonna day ball was out , robbed , and he looked me right in the eye and said ,. no , Harmes ran 50 meters to get his own kick and keep the ball in play , a Collingwood player , would just have watched roll out of play , those things were always going to make the difference, if it hadn't rained you woulda won by 10 goals , gobsmacked i was ,any way serendipidious perhaps, cheers ...GO BLUES RARARA

One hundred and twenty one thousand people. The biggest sporting crowd ever in Australia... and the 14th largest crowd for a sporting event in the world. The rivalry between these two clubs is immense. No matter where either team is on the ladder, 80k+ people will attend. While football is a bit less tribal these days, between Carlton and Collingwood, in the lead up to the game and during the game itself, the fans will be sniping and bantering at each other. And then after the game, we can sit down and have a beer with the opposition supporters and discuss the match. Hopefully, this year, 2024 will see another Carlton vs Collingwood grand final... with the mighty Blues taking home #17!

The key moment was 33:34 when Price honours McKenna's lead & his pass is a few inches too high but McKenna juggles it, then gets crashed by Hall. Most of the players around the ball stop, anticipating a mark/free, Silvagni is canny enough to grab the ball and keep running but his floppy punt lands in a nest of Collingwood defenders just forward of centre. Somehow the ball eludes them, Jezza spots the opening but has to run between two defenders, one on each side, then get in his left foot kick before a third defender can smother it. The smother is missed by inches. There's no real power in the kick, Jezza's just trying to get it forward, but the Collingwood defense has run up the ground to defend the Silvagni kick and the ball lands outside the vacant goal square, then bounces dead straight for ~12 metres. Think about all that luck that Carlton got in about 17 seconds. Instead of [potentially] losing the lead they sealed the match.

Looking at that high contact on Peter Mckenna, jt does seem that the umpire has missed an obvious free kick. Remarkable to think they used just the one field umpire in those days.
