When I was a young man I had a friend who owned a 1969 AMX. He let me have it for a couple days. It was not a very large car but its appearance betrayed how powerful it was. It featured a three on the floor. I would compare it to the Triumph Spitfire for the day. I drove one of those too and overall I thought the AMX beat the Triumph in everything. It was just shear excitement to drive it. It was a hotrod right out of the box. Thank you Lou for featuring this AMX. It brings back many fond memories to this 70 year old man!

I'm still the original owner of a 1972 Javelin AMX with 401. It rubs me the wrong way every time I see a restored Javelin with many non-original aftermarket parts added. Yes, AMC did use many parts to build the Javelin that were from different manufacturers. A 4bbl Motocraft carb that was used on the Ford Shelby, a Chrysler Torqflite auto transmission or Hurst 4spd, Kelsey-Hayes disc brakes and wheels, GM ignition, but they built a car with the best of the best, features everybody wanted on a performance car, but didn't have to add later as you would for a Ford, Chevy or Mopar. In stock condition a Javelin AMX is a thrill to drive, well balanced with plenty of reliable power, it flies down highways and hugs around turns. This featured '71 car's restoration is spot-on perfect, what a brand new Javelin looked like. Best of luck and enjoyment to its owner.

Hello Henry Nevins - I see your commentary on the Jav's and AMX's around youtube. I enjoy what u have to say as you know your stuff. Perhaps you can enlighten on the reasons as to why there are two versions of the hood T-stripes on the '71 AMX's. It is explained by the fella in the video here do you know if there is more to the story? Would the early T-stripe models be considered more collectable?... My buddy had a brand new '73 Jav back when i was in school. Had a stock 2bbl 360 - even that was a rocket. I had a new '76 Hornet X 304 in the day and my family had Ramblers, Gremlins, Hornets and Matadors. In many ways AMC built a superior product. Love the underdog. Long live AMC muscle!

Some people's memory here seem a big off....the oil embargo was Summer of 1973. It was unpredicted....unless you were psychic, you couldn't have known it was going to happen so you couldn't have bought a smaller engine because you wanted to save gas due to the crisis before 1973. Additionally, the availability of the 401 was right up thru the 1974 model year. It wasn't an issue in 1971 or even 1972.

Nice car and I have owned a bunch of AMCs including an 71 Electric Blue AMX but that incorrect hood stripe always turns me off. Looks way better with the pointy T stripe IMO

Had a Jeep Cherokee Chief that had a 401 and she was my girl but had an affair with the gas station, AMC was notorious for rust especially around the door handles

Wow! ! lou , You did it again !! This, Terry Wiener guy is one of my heroes !! Been following his accomplishments for years in several car publications. Including this 401 Amx . And his pontiac. And his other cars. I have studied '71 ,'72 Amx ' s for years. And this yellow amx is the first car I have seen that doesn't have the bottom dash surround broken, where it connects to the right side top dash !!! Even the restored amx s are broken ! I had a 72 , powder blue 401 auto, go pack AMX , with blue int. ,in the '80 s !! It was my only work Truck for 7 years. In cal. The thing just screemed !!! It was just magical. And very reliable. So ,Thanks to Terry, I have seen my first correct amx dash !!!!! Even the factory didn't fit them right.
