Yknow what I think of when I watch this? It’s that Secretariat was alive, yet virtually no one watching this race had ever heard of him and had no idea of the greatness that was just over the horizon.

I was there at Belmont when I was 14 years old. I remember a lot of fans were upset with Cannanero going for the lead. Actually, it wasn’t a bad ride, Cannanero just came up short. Two years later we witnessed the greatest horse to ever run in the Belmont.

The 5 Triple Crown winners of my lifetime all went to the front before the first turn, in the Belmont.

Wow this is fantastic! I haven’t seen this since the original broadcast 50 years ago. I remember how disappointed I was when cannanero didn’t get the triple crown we hoped for. Sets up the excitement 2 years later.

The experts did not like Canonero II because Canonero II apparetly had an inflamed hock leading up to The Belmont Stakes and only was in The Belmont because he was going for the Triple Crown. As I remember, there was an offer of $2.2 Million or so (at the time what was I believe was a record) for him on the condition he did not race in The Belmont Stakes that was turned down. Pass Catcher was an overlay in this Belmont as was practically every other horse because Canonero II was such a beloved horse, especially by those from Venezuela and the rest of South America who packed Belmont Park to a then-record crowd of 82,000 to see it with that Belmont resembling the atmosphere of a soccer match much more than Horse Racing that day (June 5, 1971, that attendance record would stand until 1999 when 85,000 were at Belmont to see Charaismatic almost win the Triple Crown but tragically broke down in the stretch with the actions of Chris Antley saving him). After this, Canonero was never quite the same, though about 15 months later in September 1972, he would equal the then-world record for 1 1/8 Miles of 1:46 1/5 I believe when he won the Stymie Handicap (which before the Marlboro Cup was introduced the next year was the main prep race for The Woodward).

Bravo Gustavo Avila , Bravo Juan Arias , Bravo Pedro Batista ,Bravo Venezuela !!!

It's strange both in this video and the one of the 1970 Belmont Stakes to see Belmont with only one turf course (what is the Widener). What is now the inner turf course was used only for jump races at that time.

Had Canonero switched to his right lead, he may have had that extra kick to hold on.
