Thanks for posting this just in time for the 50th anniversary; the quality of the video is much better than others of this race that have been posted.

This is the first time I have seen this race in color! I sat on my bed as a 16-year-old watching this on my 13-inch B&W TV and recording the sound on a small reel-t-reel tape recorder! Thanks a million for the clear posting!

Lifelong exercise rider here, the horses today aren't nearly as well behaved as the horses back then don't ask me why, but if you watch them load in the gate, what a group of gentlemen.

Canonero 2, if I'm not mistaken, ran in the largest field ever run in the Derby. 23 horses. Beating the old record of 22 horses in 1928, won by Reign Count. After winning the Preakness and being shipped to New York for The Belmont, all of Spanish Harlem showed up to cheer him on. Unfortunately an infection in one of his hocks (which they didn't discover until after the race) kept him from being a Triple Crown Winner.

It was actually the 1974 Kentucky Derby that had the 23 horse field (won by Cannonade, ironically), There were only 20 starters 1971 Derby, same as now.

It is the best video of this race that I have seen... it looks very good and in color, thanks for publishing it... it would be fantastic if you could get the video of the 1971 Preakness that Canonero II also won, since those that exist are very poor quality, thanks.
@retromaven21592 жыл бұрын
Thanks, much appreciated. It was recorded on 2-inch tape back in the day which accounts for the stellar quality. Unfortunately the '71 Preakness was either not recorded or survived from this particular collection. I wish I had better news for you.

@@retromaven2159 Good evening. I regret to inform that Saturday, August 21, 2021, Canonero´s trainer Juan Arias died at the age of 83, victim of Covid-19. He was born on May 6, 1938 in Marín, Yaracuy State, Venezuela. A frustrated military aviator, Arias graduated from Horse Trainer in 1959 after four years of study, integrating "Doctor Antonio Cuadrado" Class and won his first race with a horse named Atahualpa, ridden by Rogelio Cortez and owned by Mr. Guillermo Schael. Cañonero´s triumph in 97th. Kentucky Derby was an unforgettable advanced gift for his 33rd birthday. God bless you, Juan! Your legacy will never be forgotten! My sincere condolences to his family and friends!
