This is useful information clearly and simply detailed. Well done! A perfectly working PVC is important to the engines health. The air filter housing looks great. Simple things like that make a difference. I bought a 1985 C10 last week and am going through all the vacuum lines removing most along with the disconnected or defective air pollution control items.

FYI - the charcoal canister . . . when the engine has been running and then stops (taking a normal trip somewhere) the the fuel in the carburetor will expand/evaporate and the evaporates vapor gets pushed down to the canister. Then, when you start the engine, those vapors are pulled back up and get burned by the running engine. This is an environmental thing and is not a requirement for the engine to run.

So now I’m going to use your video and hopefully figure out what the heck went wrong! Thanks for posting

everyone pulls that off cause they run so much better without that crap on there.. that extra vacuum to the charcoal canister is the power robber.. i hooked all that up one time and the car got slower.. same set up on a 72 monte carlo.. the emissions systems on those years was bogus crap... literally .. the charcoal canister is the vent to your gas tank..

Enjoyed your video. I just finished doing same job on my '72 C10 with 350 I've owned for 30 years now. Noticed you didn't change the hose running from the charcoal canister to the front lower vent pipe to tank. I noticed in the Chevy service manual (section8-12 , figure 16) that there is a small plastic "restrictor" with a small hole in it 1 .25 " in line from the canister end. I cut into my old hose and there it was so I shoved it down in my new hose. Not really sure what it does other than restrict flow. I would not have discovered this without having seen the illustration in the factory service manual. Hope this helps anyone changing these hoses and wanting to keep the system stock. I could have easily thrown my old hose away without knowing there was anything up inside it. Also I installed new filter (made from a dust mask) in bottom of the charcoal canister. I removed battery and tray to get to it. Thanks for letting me comment, love my old truck. Thanks.

FYI - the air filter snout valve -- is not about smog It is about helping a cold engine run better by drawing warmer air from an air tube between the exhaust manifold and the snout when the ending is cold. The warmer air helps the gasoline vaporize for better combustion. As the engine warms and the choke opens, the snout close off the "warm air" inlet and will begin taking air from the engine compartment rather than from the tube bringing air from around the exhaust manifold. If you have not tube connected between the snout and the exhaust manifold (like the engine in the video) then there is no need for any vacuum lines. This feature is usually negligible help to the engine except for sub freezing temperatures.

glad i came across this video -i was looking to hook up a 3 line charcoal can to my 77 c20 cheyenne as they didnt come with them because emissons only applied to 1/2 tons and cars in 1977 - ive ponderd using a vacumm switch etc but tee-ing into the pvc line looks like the way to do it
@Ariccio123
@Ariccio123 8 жыл бұрын
Yup, it helped me! ...but you should still care about emissions EVEN if you're not legally required to! Older cars have a wildly disproportionate effect on overall air quality, and it'd be the proper thing to make sure all emissions systems work. That's actually why I'm here: my dad's 69 Chevy is totally missing the heat riser and THERMAC vacuum hoses (he says he had it removed years ago because some mechanic thought it was causing problems), and I want to be a good citizen and pollute as little as possible :)
