@@twrcrew8852 Yeah, I had a stock 1971 and it was a real rust bucket. A body shop spent some time on it cutting out the rusted body parts and welding in plates. It handled very well for the day, and handled far better than my 66 Mustang GT...which was a straight line car. The 240Z was a road car.

That's similar to a Corvette with 750 hp, But if you look at videos throughout KZbin Corvettes aren't very good at applying that power to the ground (they crash alot). I'm sure this Datsun goes just fine without alot of fishtailing.
@justinriley8651

the brain the driver plays a large factor in what your saying. The people are not race car drivers . The car is fine.
@thebrain9384
@thebrain9384 6 жыл бұрын
Of course driver error can be blamed, but evidence points to the vehicles if you see enough of it. When a Ferrari or a Porsche crash it's obviously something the driver was doing, the Corvette is a different story. Now it's the Challengers and the Chargers, I'm not seeing alot of Viper crashes.
@JosephSamsor

the brain it really is the driver. There are way more corvettes than Ferrari’s. That’s why you see more crashes.

Thanks Jay. What another amazing build. This guy has a near perfect taste for modding these Nissans/Datsuns the way they should be. Screw all these haters and purists who say he should have done this or that. Its his car and me and many others love it. The titanium and all the little touches like the custom jdm work wheels really set this car off. The interior was so clean and setup the way I would love, with all the modern appts. The SR seemed to be setup right. Im positive the proper head work, stock bottom end, and the perfectly matched turbo size, make for a very reliable 4xx at the wheels which is very conservative. Im sure with better tuning and e85 it would be in the 500s easily, and reliably. The way he moved that engine back, the weight removed, and that genious rear end im sure make for a very well balanced canyon carver. And BTW he said under 2k pounds. WTF!! Lol. Kudos to you Jay and the owner. Well done. Very well done!

Excellent job on the 71 240 Z I had a 71 Z in the 70s. We used to canyon race the 2 lane Provo Canyon and other mountain roads in Utah.what a good place to learn Z skills! l cherish the driving and competition.I tell my children (l Should have died a hundred deaths in my 240 Z in those Mountains!) I couldn't keep up with the Targa's 911's and the 914 mid-engine no one could out corner.I was young fearless in that 71 Z and I cherish those memories.thank you for this great article JAY

I sold my 71 240-Z after it had 100 thousand. I sold it to a friend and had the great displeasure of watching him drive it for he's next 150 thousand miles.because of lack of emissions my 71 a could out perform all Datsun Z's cars until the ZX turbo's. I was so impressed with the 914 Porsche I bought a yellow one and a orange 914 because they could out corner my 71 Z. I was so blessed to drive 2 of the best low priced high performance sports cars of that era.I would love to drive this sports car with the 4 cylinder

I can appreciate the weight saving that has been done on this car in the name of performance, but at some point the human occupants must be a consideration of the design. The qualities of the 240z that make it so desirable to tuners are the same qualities that make it so loud and tinny on the inside. Driver fatigue is real and that cabin is unbearably loud. A few pounds of strategically placed sound deadening is worth the trade-off in weight gain. Amazing car, Dominic.
@ryant67
@ryant67 7 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. I stripped the interior out of my 240Z after I bought it to address a couple of minor rust issues and paint with POR-15 for longevity. I drove it to and from work while doing this, with only the dash, drivers seat, and seat belt - bare metal everywhere. It was unbearable, many loud noises, every tiny piece of grit from the road surface was audible, and the exhaust and engine noises reverberating around the cabin. Hearing loss would be a concern. I added 30 lbs of Dynamat, covering most of the large surfaces, then put the floor mats, carpeting, vinyl trim, and plastic interior panels back. Result was the cabin became a much more pleasant space to be in, and the noise, while not modern car quiet, was at a comfortable level. The car still has that vintage rawness, but isn't oppressive like it was with the stripped interior. 50lbs of weight for a proper interior in a street driven car is a no-brainer.

Here's some info on why the car sounds so loud. It has a straight pipe/open wastegate and he clearly said the engine was moved further in towards the center which in turn would increase noise because it's closer to the firewall. Also I'm pretty sure he ran solid mounts and maybe gutted the interior a bit.

I really enjoy Jay's method of conversation. He asks questions in a blunt, straightforward way. So many people in today's world would rather bite their tongue instead of digging for information and asking a potentially culturally/racially focused question. "And do you speak Japanese?" I converse like this all the time. People always give me awkward looks when I ask to the point questions like this. But I think it's the best way to get that knowledge.

I have a low production number 71 240 and have owned it since 1976. Completely stock and 130k. Had more offers to sell it than I can count. I will NEVER sell it. I plan on getting a 72, 73, 74, 77 and an 80 280ZX and restomod them all. I love Z's.

I have done a complete restomod of a 72' 240Z out of a storage unit on a fixed income. I'm a disabled veteran and found a love for restoring Datsun's. So i used the vocational rehabilitation option that the Veterans Affairs offers to help veterans.

And the styling isn't really dated... obviously some things wouldn't fly on a modern car (like the window trim and headlights) but the overall shape and profile, a car company could make that today and nobody would blink

Great how Dominic clearly trusts Jay to drive the car. So many Leno's Garage test drives have an owner who is totally uncomfortable with someone else behind the wheel. Dominic is all smiles

It’s so enjoyable to watch when you give the «visitor» time to talk like you did now Jay, thanks. Also, this guy is interresting to listen to, so i guess it’s easier to let him talk. ;) Sometimes when you interrupt «visitors» i’m actually greatfull because they just go on about nothing, repeating themselves all the time. Then again sometimes i feel you should let them speak more, in fact it must be realy difficult to interview people and try to regulate them on the go, what’s interresting what’s not. Sometimes you’re realy good at this and sometimes not so much. :) Don’t know why i mention this, you probably never read the comments anyway. Aah just wasted time commenting again... never mind.

Jay, somewhat in this same vein, I remember a number of years ago the Buick v6 pushrod engine which was being campaigned at Indy races etc. Because they could run 30 lbs of boost and the other fellas could only run 6 or 8 lbs of boost. because they had 4 valves per cylinder and overhead cams etc. I would like to see you do a story on them and others such as the one you have done here. It is nice to see a young man who is accomplishing this and that you are promoting it. Thanks Jay.
