1970 Dodge Demon 340 vs 1970 Chevrolet Camaro SS396 L78. Pure Stock Drag Race (factory stock drag racing)
Our first car is a monster! A 1970 Dodge Demon 340 (the evil twin of the Plymouth Duster 340). The other car might look like a Z28, but it's actually a 1970 Chevy Camaro Super Sport 396 with a L78 with 375 horsepower! The Demon 340 was rather rare that year with only 10,000 made. However, the Camaro SS is even more rare with only 600 (!) L78s produced in 1970. For comparison, they made over 10 times more Z28s in 1970! If you're a fan of watching muscle cars drag race, well, this is a good match for you!
Remember, both cars participate in Factory Stock class through F.A.S.T drag racing. Make sure you visit their website. www.fastdrags.com
Here are the Factory Stock rules:

I had a 340 Duster when I was in college in the seventies. That 340 was one of the sweetest running engines any American company ever made. My room mate got his Master's Degree and a job as a coach and bought a 350 Camaro. He had had a early seventies Vette. He thought his car was faster than mine because he had a 350 and I had a 340. The 340 is arguably the best high performance motor Chrysler made during this era. I've owned a 1967 GTX automatic with headers and a 1970 Dart Swinger with a 340 automatic. Both 3.23 difs. That Swinger not only was faster than the 440, but that small block made it a better handler. Also got a couple of mpg better overall. 340s rule!

I bought a '71 Demon 340 brand new in 1971. $3200 out the door. I had to float a three year loan for it. 340 four speed, 3.91 posi rear. Deep metallic blue with white full vinyl top. White body striping , black out hood with scoops. I didn't get the air foil on the trunk deck. Got drafted and had to sell it, nowhere to store it. I miss that little street terror.

The A body's for Mopar in the semi fast back shape were specially designed. Things to notice a hemi fits between the front sub frame. The power to weight ratio was designed purposely to get the 71 Demon and duster an advantage during launch the way the car was designed allowed for maximum weight distribution. The 340 was a wicked motor. High raving large intake ports with the specially redesigned intake manifold and exhaust ports. Large over lap on the cam give it a wide power band. Forged crank and forged rods with light weight pistons allowed for 6700- 6800 shift points on the 4 speeds and 6400-6500 shift points on the automatic. The last AVS carb used on 340's was especially tuned for max air and fuel up to 6800rpm. While allowing 21 mpg with the 3.54 gears.

I always wondered what kind of drug did Chrysler slip into those 340 engines? I know that the 275 HP rating was a little bit on the low side, but c'mon Chrysler what's with these 340's? We did a lot of red light to red light racing. With my 3:55 gears I didn't need to shift in that distance. I caught a lot of big blocks by surprise. Some of my friends even used a solid lifter cam and the adjustable valve train out of the earlier 273 HP engine to rev their 340s over 7000 rpm. Real screamers

I got a 1970 340 Dodge Dart Swinger for my first car in 1976 when I was 16 yrs old. It only had 42,000 miles on it when i got it. Thanks to insurance rates and the OPEC gas crunch, I got it for $400 out the door. There was some rust that helped too. I didn't care, I loved it. I surprised many Camaros and Mustangs in it. Even though it had the auto trans and 3.23 Sure Grip it would still do 96 mph at the marked off 1/4 mile here in Pasadena, Tx. That motor had the most beautiful sounding scream when it hit the top of each gear. Happy memories 46 years later.
